Bella Napoli (Nether Edge) - Liz Ralph -

Rating:

This is a very special restaurant. The food is cooked with love and is always delicious. It is cooked from scratch and there is a bit of a wait, but it is always worth it! You can always ring up and pre-order if you are in a hurry. It is very reasonable and it is bring your own wine. I had chicken risotto last time - wonderful!

I went to a party there recently where there was a special meal for a large group - and the food was amazing - even better than the normal menu.

Strongly recommended - and everyone there is lovely!

Italian Kitchen (Sharrow Vale) - Josh Senior -

Rating:

If you are a fan of tasty Italian food, a pleasant eating atmosphere and a warm service then Italian Kitchen is not the place for you.

Me and my partner had a meal there, which to this day still upsets us to think of. Having previously been to the restaurant we were excited to return, but on this occasion we wished we hadn't. The restaurant was half full yet we were seated directly next to a large all-male party who were so loud we could not hear ourselves speak.

On all occasions where we were waiting for service, whether it was for drinks or food, we were left for periods of up to 40 minutes at a time between courses. When the food did arrive it was lukewarm and tasteless. My partner had mussels, which resembled the texture of wet cardboard (and tasted worse!). The wine provided, which may I add was not cheap, tasted like it had been purchased from the Aldi down the road.

The final sting in this tale is when we politely asked to speak with the manager of the establishment we were greeted with contempt. She would not listen to our complaints and insisted upon arguing with us over all the matters we raised. We were not offered an apology, merely a measly 10% discount, which did not make up for the experience we had.

I might refer you to one fact, since living in the Sharrow Vale area Italian Kitchen has had more than 20 new job vacancies in under a year. Strange you might say for such a small establishment, but then again I think this speaks volumes about the owner's treatment of her employees. It seems she treats everyone with the same foul attitude that we experienced.

The one star given was simply because I could not select zero. Although zero is the actual rating I would bestow up Italian Kitchen.

And those of you out there looking for tasty Italian food, a pleasant eating atmosphere and a warm service, I would recommend Maranello's just a 5-minute walk up the road.

Coal Grill and Bar (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Lisa Hewitt -

Rating:

I went with my son for his birthday. Looks modern and impressive. The service was slow and there were not many people in. The waitress did not have knowledge of the menu and price. Waited for ages, thought of leaving.

Starter arrived (said with salad, but was just a bit of dry lettuce), no butter was offered for toast with pate.

Mains came, one supposed to be rare and one medium, but both were well done the same. Chips were inedible, salad again bit of dry lettuce. As the waitress put the meal down asked if it was OK, I mumbled yes with a mouthful of steak.

When she came back I complained and she rudely said I should have complained earlier that she had given me the opportunity. My son being a student had eaten all of his meal which she commented on. I went home still hungry and £28 lighter for rude service and crap food.

Waitress did offer me to speak to the manager but I did not want to ruin my son's birthday so I paid and said that I would not return and I had no apology. Left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Cricket Inn (Totley) - Amanda Barrett -

Rating:

Visited for lunch last December with my parents after hearing good reviews, but was bitterly disappointed with the standard of food.

My starter and main were OK but on the bland side, as was my mother's meal. My father always enjoys a good steak, and being a retired butcher, knows his cuts. He was not at all impressed to be served an unrecognisable and tough cut of beef, masquerading as best sirloin, with a price tag of around £20 for the dish.

After complaining to the waiter we were astonished that we did not get a replacement dish, nor did the manager or chef come to apologise or offer any explanation. My father, not wanting to cause a fuss as it wasn't the young waiter's fault, paid the bill.

We will not be going again, and feel very cheated.

El Paso (City Centre) - Bill Paton -

Rating:

I've been going to this restaurant for many years and thought it's about time I told other people how good it is.

The most important thing to know about El Paso is that everything is full of flavour. No bland dishes here. From the steak diane to the fantastic starters, it's all good. The pizzas take some beating, too.

I love the atmosphere and the friendly staff and all at very reasonable prices. They do great birthday parties, too. You must try this place out. You won't be disappointed.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - James Swallow -

Rating:

I cannot recommend this place enough. My friend and I went here tonight and straight from walking in we were made to feel completely welcome. Bread and olives awaited us on the table and the staff were completely helpful with all choices.

I started with pan fried fillet of bream, which was delightful with a refreshing salad and followed with a massive whole roasted sea bass. My friend ordered from the tapas menu and received some of the best monkfish skewers I have ever tasted and a fish stew that I will definitely order next time.

The dessert menu looked amazing but I couldn't have eaten another thing.

All in all the atmosphere, food and staff all made this a wonderful evening and I will return soon.

Bay of Bengal (Gleadless) - Elaine Loveday -

Rating:

Been a customer of this restaurant since it opened last year. Fantastic food, great customer service, lovely decor and quite often a complementary glass of bubbly.

Would recommend to anyone wanting a great Indian meal.

India Garden (Heeley) - Paul -

Rating:

Completely the opposite to Stephen - the food here is consistently excellent and inexpensive, and the service is second-to-none.

Yes Stephen I am a local, but I have eaten curry in places from Montreal to Kuala Lumpur, so I know a good curry when I taste one (n.b. taste being the operative word, who cares what it looks like?).

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Liz and Chris Gill -

Rating:

What an amazing place. We used to go there in the late 1970s when we were courting. Saturdays it was Mama's (not Mama's & Leonie's) for a burger then to the pictures, then drinks round Sheffield and then Mama's for a pizza, then the pictures again, then drinks again, then home. We were younger, skinnier and didn't have bills to pay back then, so now it's not so regular it's more of a treat.

Now it's dearer and the pizzas seem to have shrunk (or we've also grown) but they taste exactly the same. And it's the first place I tasted capers and I have been addicted to them ever since. We've had many chefs but it must be a special recipe because they taste the same and the burgers and salad with melted mozzarella squeezing out all over are brilliant.

Never ever, ever close please!

P.S. I sat next to David Essex one Saturday and Mike Reid the following week.

Vito's (Walkley) - Tamlin McPherson -

Rating:

Went tonight and was taken for a surprise meal by my girlfriend. The restaurant has been recently re-designed and re-decorated to a very contemporary and elegant style, clean lines and exposed brickwork, a wonderful 21st century twist on traditional Italian style.

The meals we had were freshly prepared and wonderfully tasty. My girlfriend had the mussels to start, which were supremely fresh, I tried them and wished I'd ordered them. We both had a free range chicken and free range bacon dish, which Vito himself prepared, which was not normally on the menu, which came with a fantastically rich tomato and mushroom sauce and crisp, roast vegetables, followed by his family recipe zabaglione, which surpasses the equivalents I've had in many other restaurants.

This restaurant is a gem hidden in Walkley. The staff are attentive but not overbearing, and Paolo - our waiter - was marvellous throughout our meal. Definitely the best traditional Italian restaurant in South Yorkshire.

Chutney (Gleadless) - Karl Mellett -

Rating:

Please keep away this is the worse curry house ever. It taken 1 hour 40 minutes to arrive.

I ordered a madras - 6 chicken bits, no flavour and not very spicy. A child could have eaten it. The Peshwari naan was cremated.

I would give this place no stars but you have to give it at least 1.

Viva Tequila (Gleadless) - Sarah -

Rating:

Be warned, 10 percent service charge added.

Party of 45 celebrating a birthday. Food average, staff rude, manager rude. Our bill for our table came to £160.

We got together £165, a great tip. No, they wanted £176. I went to pay the bill and said to the bar staff that it's all there with extra, but not the £17.00 that they wanted. With that I was met by the manager who became aggressive and began to push against me. I think this was to try intimidate me, NOT.

I explained that a tip is just that. If the service justified a £17.00 tip then gladly give it but the £5.00 was more than fair for the rubbish service. With that he was refusing payment and threatened to call the police I said call them you are refusing payment then he decided that as I was not the party organiser he would not deal with me. Fine, I left.

I've since found out she paid. Pity I didn't organise it, as he would have just got the £160 that the bill was.

Never again. I had to put at least one star or it wouldn't let me leave this review.

La Luna (Banner Cross) - David Wild -

Rating:

My wife and I paid our first visit to La Luna on Saturday night, after a friend of mine told me that it was worth a visit.

We were not disappointed, it was a really busy night so I was glad that I had booked a table. The service was really good to say how busy it was, and the food was very good, too.

We will be going back again and hoping for more of the same.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Jenny Hockey -

Rating:

After some disappointments with this restaurant over the years we decided to try it again last night, to make a change. What a good decision. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Olives and bread waiting for us on the table, a good crowd of people at other tables but not noisy or hectic, lots of staff ready to help. My crab salad dish was delicious, carefully and thoughtfully put together - and sole dieppoise to follow was similarly enjoyable.

An after dinner digestif was offered when they learned it was my birthday - and staff clearly cared that we had a good experience. It was one of those dining experiences where you know you're in good hands right from the word go.

Silversmiths (City Centre) - Charlotte Bell -

Rating:

Very disappointed.

Just returned from a meal at this restaurant upon a friends recommendation and was extremely disappointed! Wonder if because we chose to eat late (9:30PM) and they thought that we might be three sheets to the wind and might not realise how poor the service was!

We ordered our drinks a bottle of wine whereupon the waitress asked how many glasses we wanted. When we asked for two (our party size was 4) the waitress walked off with only 2 drink orders. The other 2 in our party then had to grab another waitress to order their drinks.

The wine that we ordered they didn't have available, then when our partners went to order their real ales there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to find out what they actually did and didn't have available!

We ordered our meals and starters were all okay. Main courses were OK except the Stacey beef, which we ordered medium. However, when it came it was very poor. No steak knife was provided and I struggled to cut in to it. When I did manage to cut it, the piece was so chewy I struggled to digest this and spat it out.

When the waitress came to clear our plates she asked why I had left my meal I explained it was not very good. I said I wasn't prepared to pay for such a poor meal so she said she would have a word with the manager.

The front of house manager came over but to be perfectly honest from the offing she did not appear very empathetic and straight away went on the defensive and tried to insinuate that it was my fault that I had not requested it cooked in the right way. I explained I usually eat my steak medium however am normally provided with both a steak knife and don't normally have an issue with this.

Although the restaurant did waiver the cost of that one main meal I found her attitude towards our feedback very disappointing and therefore on this basis alone would not return to the restaurant and not recommend this to anyone.

Wagamama (City Centre) - Lucy -

Rating:

First off, don't expect legitimate Japanese food, this is heavily adapted for a Western palate.

Service is hit and miss. Have been a few times and been served instantly, although have been once or twice where it has felt like the staff were ignoring us on purpose (not sure why they would do that, tip wise).

Food is good, although it's hard to comment on other dishes, as I always order the katsu (which is fairly legit).

Food is also served as and when ready, so one of you sometimes has a dish waiting for 10 minutes while waiting for others.

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - John Wardle -

Rating:

We have been surprised to read some poor reviews of Mama's & Leonie's. Unjustified in our opinion.

We have been this evening as we always do for a pre-theatre meal. Yes the chairs are fairly rustic but quite satisfactory for the duration of a meal. The atmosphere is lively, as we like it, the service is warm, prompt and unfussy.

We had excellent fishcakes as a shared starter and both enjoyed the chicken tikka salad with jacket potato. With a half litre of Merlot and a bottle of sparkling water the bill came to under £40, hardly extortionate.

We shall be continuing to make our regular visits.

Ego (City Centre) - Richard Jones -

Rating:

After a recent disappointing visit to Ego, I felt compelled to write a review.

I went with my parents and brothers on a Monday afternoon and I started with the Gambas al Pil-Pil - black tiger prawns, garlic, chilli, tomato-rubbed bread. I can only assume that these were overcooked, as they were shrivelled, quite tough and served in an overly spicy sauce. I like hot food but this seemed over the top for the type of dish.

For my main course I had the Moroccan Chicken Tajine - couscous, Moroccan vegetables & tzatziki. The chicken was tough, and grilled quite aggressively, leaving burnt edges. The tajine sauce and vegetables were OK, but overall bland with no taste to it. However, that could have been because I hadn't recovered from the starter.

The consensus from everyone else was that it was OK but nothing special. Service was good. Decor was nice. However, the next evening my dad got enteritis and as he isn't very mobile, this had unfortunate consequences for our decor. Of course it can't be proven that his meal was to blame. However, he only had a main course, which was the Tuscan Meatballs from the lunch menu.

Based on a previous review, I would say that they perhaps haven't improved in the last year.

So as I said at the start... disappointing.

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Fiona Willis -

Rating:

Nice pleasant eating area, disastrous pizza! Totally overpriced, billed as home made! Completely bought-in bases and circa 1970 topping - all cheese and very little else - a 5 year old could have made better. Tiny portion and at between £9 - £10 per pizza - a total disgrace.

We were in Sheffield for only one night and would certainly go anywhere but here if we went back. Lovely girls serving though, pity about the food.
