Balti King (Broomhill) - J Fowler -

Rating:

I have been a few times to the Balti King, and I have never been disappointed. Food is quality and tasty, great tasting Cobra lager, a great variety of food, and very friendly staff.

Wong Ting (City Centre) - Alan -

Rating:

We took our daughter and some of her friends out for an eighteenth birthday meal.

The food was excellent and the service outstanding. With a vegetarian and a mixed set of orders the waiter was very helpful in guiding us through the different menu options and made sure everyone was catered for fully.

The food was served quickly and efficiently in quantities that were sufficient to defeat most of the diners.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and we will certainly be going back again.

Giraffe (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Barnaby Knowles -

Rating:

Non-existent service.

We visited on a Monday evening at 9:15PM and were shown straight to a table. The restaurant was not busy at all - maybe five or six tables were occupied. Yet after 15 minutes nobody had even come to take a drinks order, let alone ask if we were ready to order our meals. Goodness knows what the three or so staff that we watched wandering around were actually doing.

We walked out and went to Ed's Easy Diner just next door where the service was spot-on and we enjoyed a great meal.

Coal Grill and Bar (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Joy Fairbrother -

Rating:

Visited Thursday evening last week. Had a friendly welcome and a waitress who knew her menu. The food was sizzling and the side dishes hot.

It wasn't very busy, but all-in-all we had a fabulous meal and really enjoyed the evening.

Hoping to go again tomorrow.

Indus (Attercliffe) - Natalie Shiply -

Rating:

I have been going to Indus for many years and it only gets better. The food is full of flavour, the atmosphere is always fun and the staff are brilliant. They have recently had a refurbishment with a new bar in place and very comfortable seats.

If you want some great food and great prices do pop down. Its not too far from the city centre and accessible via car and tram!

Efes (City Centre) - Easa Cole -

Rating:

I would say this is a superb establishment, and the staff, let's say perhaps they could do with a little upskilling. However, there was one waiter who was of excellent service and as this was the first time I had been there I would give it a modest 7.5 out of 10.

Visited this restaurant on Thursday 13th November 2014, lunch time.

Arrived at 12:10PM. Very quick to take your order, soup served within 5 minutes. The problems then began.

We waited and waited and waited 55 minutes for the main course. Still did not arrive. In the end we put our coats on and decided to leave. We still got charged for the soup.

There were approximately 50 people came in after us, all got served within 2 minutes of arriving. You've guessed it - all Chinese.

Smoke Barbecue (City Centre) - Tomas -

Rating:

This was our second visit to this location. The staff were very nice, but the company policy is not as good!

We ordered wine, from a small offering, so small that they should consider taking it off the menu. We asked for wine glasses! No, jam jars that we saw other dinners drinking from. Oh dear what a performance. The best that the young lady could come up with was something she found in the back area. We were offered two of the crappiest offerings you have ever set you eyes on!

This restaurant is in the heart of the city, but the attitude of the manager, who did at least come to our table, did not appease me at all. His arrogance was one of "we tell you what you get, and if you don't like it!" Well sorry but that does not wash, we are customers and expect to be treated as such.

The food was not up to much and did not come up to our expectations. I did say to the manager that my rating was probably one up from a MacDonald's, and that it was over thirty years since I had been in one of those places. This place will not be on our recommendations list. The owners need to look at what they are offering, come off the high horse attitude, not be so arrogant, and cater for the customer, not themselves. People like us will spend money, we do like wine, but don't treat us like idiots.

This is not how a restaurant should be run. Our beautiful city deserves better standards, go to Piccolino across the way and see how it's done! See how best practices works.

P.S. the waiting staff on both occasions were great.

Couch (Sharrow Vale) - Esme -

Rating:

I was recommended this restaurant to try by a friend who thought that Couch would be a great informal, relaxing atmosphere to catch up with friends in and enjoy some nice, wholesome food to celebrate a birthday.

When we arrived, there was no acknowledgement that this was a birthday booking and we were rushed to start our meal, with barely any time for the group to chat and relax. We ordered across the menu so that everyone had something different to try, and decided it would be nice to share.

I ordered three plates of tapas. My Greek salad came out looking very lacklustre - wilting and soggy leaves, no dressing, and about two cubes of cheese, with no dressing.

My second plate was barely better. Being of Spanish/Italian heritage I do appreciate good tapas, so my fail-safe patatas bravas were sorely disappointing and can only be described as not worth paying for. The potatoes were heat-dried and the thick passata masquerading as sauce was flavourless and over-poured. The only flavour I could pick out was paprika. There was no aioli - how it is ordinarily served - and the potatoes were drowned.

My last dish - again was very safe - I opted for hummus on toasted bread. Grey paste, tasteless and unappetising.

My friend also had tapas and opted for two meat dishes and a patatas bravas. The meatballs were bobbing up and down in a sea of orange, tasteless sauce, and his chorizo was overcooked and dry.

Wanting to enjoy my birthday, we discreetly asked our serving waitress to swap at least the potatoes for something we recognised as one of our favourite dishes - needing to remind her how it should be served. She was at most coldly obliging, and was not even discreet enough to speak quietly, as we heard her mention very loudly to other staff our complaint.

The evening went from bad to worse, as more plates were served out. The flat breads were uncooked and two people eating them tried to ask for meat knifes so they could eat their jammy pastries - supposedly savoury! Everyone on the table had also asked for wedges, the quality of which we hoped may be reflected in the price £2.50 for a half-filled bowl. They were soggy and tasted like they had been defrosted and reheated in a microwave, although McCain are certainly doing better off their microwave menu!

Because it was a birthday treat, especially, my friends did decide to tell the waitress that our whole group were very unhappy, to see if we could be compensated for such a poor meal. The waitress seemed unable to cope or handle our complaint and kept referring to empty ignorant corporate speak saying "We only serve things that are perfect, we serve things like this and that is it".

Our group included older people, a pregnant guest, and also a few people who had never eaten out in Sheffield. Each one of us felt very upset and affronted by the poor food and even worse service. Having worked in hospitality - as a waitress, bar tender and manager - I was surprises she would dispute our experience or challenge a paying customer, voiding any sense of the customer is always right, or even should be respected.

The manager was no better, she had no authority and was very aggressive, challenging us to come back the next day to complain, saying "Yeah, you come back, I'll be looking forward to it".

We asked her what she may be prepared to do for us, as she had clearly forgotten any manager training about resolutions and managing complaints. So we asked her "What would you be prepared to do for us, as we are very unhappy and would like to finish our evening in Couch better than it has started". She said money off was not an option, and asked us very rudely "Well what is it you're expecting?" No apology forthcoming or any thoughts on how to improve customer relations and retain future custom. She bitched very loudly or all to overhear with the chefs and said "I can't wait 'til they leave."

We were in the end offered £5 off the bill. I would have happily swapped for a nicer meal and not having to resort to a cheap argument with her in the middle of my meal.

Overall, it's the worst place I've ever eaten, with the poorest policies to keep customers happy, managers, chef and staff should accept that things aren't perfect if they are acting genuinely on customer feedback. What a shame for such a place with such potential.

Recommendations: get some better staff and try sampling the food you serve.

Blue Moon Cafe (City Centre) - Mandy Kingston -

Rating:

Excellent lunch on 18/10/2014. Not even a vegetarian but had a lovely aubergine dish with a selection of salad, a frothy coffee, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Florentine (Ranmoor) - Janet Simpson -

Rating:

I have been to this restaurant five times now and it just gets better.

The food is presented in a very different way. Its always hot and served with a smile. The service is quick and the food is a bit different to your usual pub grub. You feel as if you have had a good night out whether it be family or a romantic night out for your birthday or a special occasion.

I think this restaurant would be perfect place for a Christmas dinner or works party with a twist of elegance at a price you can afford. Staff do a good job to keep you happy.

La Luna (Banner Cross) - Donna Bennett -

Rating:

Lovely, intimate restaurant.

Bring your own wine with no corkage charge - fantastic.

Two starters, two mains (fillet steaks), two coffees - just under £50. Excellent food and well priced.

Two of the best steaks we have ever had - cooked to perfection (rare and medium)

Service very good.

A little lacking in atmosphere - but then again we arrived early in the evening for 7:15PM and left for 9PM (there was another booking for our table at 9:15PM, which we were informed about when we booked).

Fabulous place - have already recommended and will definitely eat here again.

Smoke Barbecue (City Centre) - Valerie Vaughan -

Rating:

Had heard mixed reviews about the place so decided to try it for myself. Went with my family.

Loved the decor and the open kitchen. The food was really good (except for the soggy, tasteless side of coleslaw). Food and drink prices were OK but the desserts in a jar were a bit pricey at £5 each.

The whole experience let down by two things:

1. Metal plates. Besides their awful, well-used appearance, cutting meat on them was as bad as running your nails down a blackboard!

2. Wine served in a tumbler! Glad I didn't have the Prosecco... might as well have been served in a beer glass!

I know it's not fine dining and they're wanting to be "different", but please proper plates... food needs to look good and be well-presented to be enjoyed. The same goes for appropriate glassware.

And just a small point on the service... it was a bit robotic - they seemed too keen on getting people seated and served quickly and forgot about some good old friendly interaction.

So, in closing, I cannot fault the food or the setting, but it needs a few tweaks before I would return or go out of my way to recommend it.

A1 service and food. We have visited both evenings and lunchtime, and never been disappointed. Keep seeing the same regulars, so they must be doing something right.

Fairways Inn (Birley Wood) - Janet Shaw -

Rating:

Our party of eight adults came to your restaurant Sunday in September.

Despite being lunchtime and very busy, the queue for the carvery soon went down. Two of our party had something off the menu it took only 10 minutes to arrive. All our plates were empty, and I think that says it all.

I was warned when I booked my tables how busy it gets, but they still had our meals on time.

Only I come for lunch every Thursday once a month. Lovely food and good, attentive staff, is all you need. I look forward to my next visit.

Carluccio's (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Denise Green -

Rating:

I'm sorry that but I was disappointed to say the least.

The waiter was very abrupt. We ordered the bread tin, which consisted of two bread sticks, one piece of really hard and stale tasting bread, a piece of sponge like bread, and a tiny piece of white bread, which was sent back and replaced with the same thing. Terrible for nearly £4.

My main meal was pasta with four types of mushrooms, which were that small you needed a magnifying glass to see them. The sauce was bland and consisted of water and garlic.

Will not be going again, sorry.

Forum (City Centre) - Cliff Shaw -

Rating:

I enjoyed a stir fry, very tasty. My partner ordered a burger, again very tasty and massive.

The service was friendly but a little slow.

All in all a good experience. Would recommend and will go back again for sure.
