Maranello's (Sharrow Vale) - Andy Garner -

Rating:

Had a meal last night (03/09/2011). Service was fantastic. We both had a steak (with pepper sauce). Without doubt it was the best steak I have ever had.

Would recommend it to anyone. Truly a 5-star place. Well done all!

We will definitely come again.

Bay of Bengal (Gleadless) - Craig Simnett -

Rating:

Been again! It looks like all the troubles that were evident have evaporated!

The service has improved dramatically and is now bordering on exceptional. The food that is served is amazing. We've been 3 times now and had different dishes each time (we are slowly working our way through the menu) and all have been next to perfection!

I have given this restaurant 5 stars now and it deserves each one!

Jewel (Attercliffe) - Kevin Ashton -

Rating:

I used to frequent this establishment when it was known as the Pheasant Inn and have fond memories of many a Happy Hour, so decided to give it a try.

Have now been to the Jewel five times - the first one was when it was only just opened.

Never been disappointed, as the quality of the food and the range of choices offered is exceptional. In the early days the service was a little haphazard but now they have become established it is fine.

I have recommended the Jewel to numerous friends and colleagues and every one has been delighted.

One accepts that the prices may be a little higher than your normal "curry house" but it certainly is well worth the difference.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Louisa Walker -

Rating:

I have been going to the Med for over ten years now, and rate this restaurant very highly.

Since Otto has fully taken the reigns from his business partner it has gone from strength to strength. You could not find a more attentive and welcoming host.

I have eaten most of the tapas and love it, calamari, lamb's kidneys, pea tortilla, garlic chicken, stuffed baby aubergines all gorgeous.

The specials board has a great mix of starters. Beautiful fish cakes, crab and avocado salad, pear and walnut, sardines, meatballs - all yum.

Mains on the specials board include fish, chicken, lamb and steak so meat eaters are catered for, too, but the main menu has beautiful choices anyway.

I have always loved the side veg and found it plenty. The dauphinoise potatoes are too good!

If I start on the puddings this will be the longest review on here but with the sticky toffee, pecan pie, oh my.

Seriously you cannot fault this restaurant. Food, service and experience are all top quality.

Rating:

The food is exceptional. The service is improving. We have been twice now, with different people in our party and we have had different dishes and each time they have been superb. The food was tasty and spiced to perfection, each dish tasting and looking very different.

They do takeaways, too, and we thoroughly expect to be trying those out. The restaurant has only been open for two weeks and the teething troubles evident on the first visit appear to have been ironed out.

I recommend this restaurant!

Dim Sum (Heeley) - Toni Guest -

Rating:

Very expensive but nice food only if I didn't receive a caterpillar on my plate! Customer service lacks, too. No one smiles.

Bankers Draft (City Centre) - Charlie Keable -

Rating:

Our experience here was no more than appalling.

Shortly after arriving the members of our party who were under age but not drinking, and those who didn't purchase anything were treated like criminals and juvenile delinquents. Apparently the restaurant is "metaphorical" and the pub doesn't accept anyone under the age of 18. So even those of us who were paying customers and under 18 were talked to in a threatening manner by the manager and forced to leave under the risk of them calling the police for crimes that no-one committed.

Our completely normal and quite drink was ruined by staff members using their non-existent powers to remove people who were apparently subject of their prejudice against youths. Extremely disappointing.

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Shaun Taylor -

Rating:

Visited very early evening on 19/08/2011 with my wife and members of our family. The staff were brilliant but that was it. The food was garbage and over priced.

We eat out a lot and this was an experience we wont be repeating. My wife is a chef and if I take her there again she will divorce me! Only kidding but never again. Yuck.

Piccolos (City Centre) - Nellie Mulholland -

Rating:

Absolutely love this restaurant. Have visited many times since returning to Sheffield after living in various parts of the world.

The garlic bread is gorgeous and the authentic Italian pizza is great - would highly recommend! The staff are always welcoming and friendly and very accommodating of any specific needs.

Would highly recommend.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Julia Brady -

Rating:

I have just been presented with possibly the second worst meal I have ever eaten in Sheffield. Seriously disappointing food.

My husband's squid starter was really tough - not a good sign in a restaurant that supposedly specialises in fish dishes - and the duck dish was poorly presented - swimming in a sea of tooth achingly sweet and sloppy sauce. I was also sure that the sauce had been introduced to some gravy granules at some point in its cooking.

The small portion of vegetables had been microwaved and covered in dried herbs that made it hard to appreciate individual flavours and textures.

My husband's fish stew was average - the liquor bordering on bitter and some of the fish was quite dry - almost like it had all been cooked separately and put together before serving.

When I told the staff that my food wasn't good they graciously took it off the bill but it was still poor value for money in my opinion. I have eaten at this restaurant before and it was much better quality but that was a couple of years ago. I don't know what's gone wrong but they can't afford to turn out this poor standard when they are being challenged by other restaurants in Sheffield that deliver much better quality and value.

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Adrian Favell -

Rating:

Had a meal at Mama's & Leonie's last night. What a disappointment. It has no Italian feel whatsoever.

We were in a group of 13, and nobody had a great compliment to say about any of their food except for the minestrone soup starter and the chocolate fudge cake desert.

I had Antipasto Italienne. It was a very poor starter, which was chopped up 'cheap' supermarket salad tomatoes, chorizo (Spanish), tinned olives and 3 tinned mussels on a bed of Iceberg lettuce. Shameful!

My main was a Pizza Picante. Picante, usually meaning spicy. It certainly wasn't spicy at all. It tasted like a cheap supermarket pizza. It was quite small too, which proved to be a bonus.

Ice cream - Mr Whippy. Nothing like traditional Italian ice cream. Oh dear.

The Peroni was spot on though - it was bottled.

The staff were nice and friendly though.

Would I go back - definitely not. Piccolino is around the corner, and although a chain, blows Mama's & Leonie's away with more authentic Italian food, not in an authentic setting, but with a more Italian feel.

There are so many nicer places to eat, just pick one of those instead.

Snap Deli (Banner Cross) - Alyssia Bailey -

Rating:

I regularly order mixed sandwich platters from this cafe and they are delicious! Lovely people with a great chilled out environment in the cafe. All the staff are extremely helpful and cheerful! I would definitely recommend this place!

First night I was just being nosey.

It was fantastic - tasty and plenty of food at your table. Clean and the staff very friendly. Thank you.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Anthony Hogger -

Rating:

Our visit was very much a last minute thing and we had only our son's account that a few friends had given the restaurant good reviews so we didn't know what to expect. We went last Saturday and managed to secure a table for four following a cancellation.

I have travelled quite a lot in the UK on business and for pleasure and have eaten at many places in Sheffield over the last 6 years of my boys attending the universities but I can honestly say this is in my top three places to eat now in the UK.

Food - We sampled 12 different dishes in all from three courses and all were universally excellent in terms of cooking, portions and presentation.

Service - From start to finish nothing was left to chance and everybody was both friendly and attentive but in no way overpowering. It was truly relaxed but very professional.

Ambience - Like a comfortable pair of shoes. Clean, warm and welcoming. Don't go if you want LED lighting and designer cushions etc...

Cost - Great value for money and far cheaper than eating in our 4-star hotel just round the corner where there was little evidence of quality/service or welcome, but a good deal more expense for a similar meal the previous night. Price is very comparable to other similar sized restaurants in Sharrow Vale or Eccy Road but few offer the service or quality.

All in, a great but unexpected pleasure. We will return and not hesitate to recommend to others.

Jewel (Attercliffe) - Valerie Wragg -

Rating:

We ate at Jewel on 13/08/2011, it was our first visit and won't be our last. There were only a few people in whilst we were there, but the food was of a very good quality.

The staff were very accommodating and eloquent - they are trying to get everything right rather than fill up the restaurant and have complaints. They gave us complimentary drinks and arranged a taxi for us.

Not the place for if you want a cheap meal though, but still very enjoyable. We also had pre-dinner drinks at the Carbrook, a very friendly pub.

Love it, nice food, best food I ever had in my life. I recommend it everyone, love it. Going there today for a birthday dinner and can't wait.

Visited this restaurant recently. Good food at good prices, large portions and good value for money. Would highly recommend.

Jewel (Attercliffe) - Louise -

Rating:

Reading the reviews, the restaurant didn't sound good. However, since it's a local business I decided to check it out for myself with friends and family.

Seeing it for myself it did not live up to the negative reviews. It was very pleasant and beautifully decorated, and as for the food it was of high-end Indian cuisine: it was presented well and tasted brilliant so there were no faults there.

I would definitely recommend that you pay a visit and don't be put off by the negative comments: check it out for yourself and see how fantastic the service is.

I hope this helps.

Lokanta (Broomhill) - Julie Shaw -

Rating:

This was our first visit to Lokanta but it will not be our last.

The food is excellent, as is the customer service. The waiter was very attentive and we did not wait for very long for anything. All the meat was extremely tender and cooked perfectly as was the rice, fish and vegetable dishes.

The portions were quite large, too, and so it was also good value for money. We even tried a bottle of Turkish wine, which was also very good.

I look forward to going again soon with some friends.

Ashoka (Sharrow) - Alex Moore -

Rating:

I've been here a couple of times now and highly recommend it for a good curry in Sheffield - friendly staff, very tasty food and decent price as well.

It isn't the biggest place though, and quite narrow, so if you are in a group of more than 4 it probably isn't the best (as evidenced by other reviews here).
