Crosspool Tavern (Crosspool) - Phil -

Rating:

I see the previous review was in 2008, when I believe they had some problems. However, we have been several times in the last year and always found excellent value and quality food.

I would say that this was my favourite carvery. The only downside was that there was (on a Sunday afternoon) only one person on the bar who had to also change barrels etc... as well. Despite this, we'll keep on going there.

Casanova Pizzeria Ristorante (Crookes) - Phil -

Rating:

A really bad experience here. The evening was soured from the beginning when the waiter would not honour our pre-paid voucher. The voucher said it was "for up to four persons", which means that less than four could be accommodated. Although we had a party of three, he demanded that we bought four sittings because the voucher should be read as "for four persons" (which it clearly didn't)! Either the voucher company misinterpreted the offer from the restaurant, or the latter had changed its mind. Either way, the voucher should have been honoured. I see from reviews elsewhere that this is not the first time that customers have been similarly upset.

As for the food, I may have made bad choices. I ordered "Funghi Alla Casanova", which turned out to be something like a watery and tasteless mushroom soup with a few mushrooms floating in it.

The main course was "Risotto Al Pollo", but it was very stodgy and not very flavourful, which I had to leave.

I gave up there and couldn't wait to leave. The food is over-priced and mediocre at best.

The atmosphere was steamy - not in a sensual sense - but loads of condensation, indicating that it was poorly ventilated. We were seated too close to a door to the toilets so that I had to get up every time someone wanted to use them.

On leaving, we took the fourth sitting home with us as a take-away but they tried to charge VAT for it on the bill.

After all this, they had the gall to ask if I wanted to add 10 or 15% gratuity to the bill!

Never again!

Old Red Lion (Grenoside) - Jeanette Bourne -

Rating:

Recently rented a cottage in Grenoside. Visited the Old Red Lion every day we were there, either for just a drink after a long walk in the local countryside or popped back for a meal.

Why did we keep going back? The service. Each afternoon we were warmly welcomed and our dog was given treats. There appeared to be different staff on each day, made no difference, everyone was friendly.

Obviously the food was also worth going back for, too. A smaller menu than I would have expected. However, this may be why the meals were presented and cooked well.

The first meal I had of homemade beef burger was quite filling for me, so the following meal I had the starter of pasta stuffed with goat's cheese and a side salad, thinking this would be a smaller portion for me. Gosh if that was a normal starter portion it was a meal in itself.

Good pub food, presented to restaurant standard. Excellent service.

Bay of Bengal (Gleadless) - Rob Holmes -

Rating:

I'm stereotypical Friday night takeaway curry man! The tilapia biran is a fabulous dish and if you haven't tried a fish dish, you are missing out! This is probably the best fish there is and Bay of Bengal do this one extremely well!

Fairly unique to Sheffield too, so give it a go and you won't look back. Great food and several of our friends are now going regularly after our recommendation.

East & West (Nether Edge) - Wayne Arnold -

Rating:

I'd never tasted Sri Lankan food before, although I have for many years been a big fan of eastern and Indian foods, so this was something new for me.

The food is excellent, very good service and very competitive prices. A treat in every way. I have been back every month or so and have highly recommended it to everyone who appreciates good food. OK the place is a bit small but frankly who cares when it's this damn good!

They now have a license to sell alcohol, too.

Dim Sum (Heeley) - Rosemary Lethem -

Rating:

We have always found this family-run restaurant to be welcoming, serve delicious food and be extremely good value for money.

We are occasional diners, often with elderly mothers, but are recognised and greeted. They make everything, including all the huge selection of dim sum, on the premises and there are unusual special dishes as well as standard fare. So completely different from your other reviewer!

Marco's (Woodseats) - Alan Peters -

Rating:

Totally disagree with Rob. Very friendly atmosphere with great service and reasonably priced quality food, would recommend Marco's to anyone.

Yes the decor may be dated but it had no bearing on my experience and I'm an interior designer. Charming little place.

La Romantica (Heeley) - Jill Jones -

Rating:

Made such a refreshing change to eat in a simple restaurant that is not part of a chain serving all the same food.

Prices are excellent and the quality of food superb. Proper portion sizes, too, which makes it fantastic value for money.

Service was excellent and we had a brilliant evening. Will definitely return and would recommend to anyone!

Bay of Bengal (Gleadless) - Andrew Burton -

Rating:

Just been tonight for first time. Didn't book but would book to avoid disappointment next time, as at 7 o'clock every table was full and the relays were quick and filled back up again.

They squeezed us in and although 5 people round a table of four wouldn't be ideal, the food more than made up for it.

5 people 3 courses each plus drinks cost £95 and we all ordered individual meals. Would consider sharing next time! They were more than obliging to box the food we didn't eat and allow us to take it home.

All the staff were accommodating and very polite without being patronising.

Will definitely be going back at some point and hope our next visit is as good as this one! Enjoy.

Piccolos (City Centre) - David & Helen Jackson -

Rating:

Visiting an unknown Sheffield we walked the streets on a Friday night looking for somewhere to eat. Saw Piccolo's, which was just what we wanted, a proper looking Italian.

The ground floor had perhaps a dozen tables, so we considered ourselves fortunate to get a table on spec.

The atmosphere was intimate and the food delicious. When we wanted to vary the contents of a dish, it was not a problem. The two front of house staff were very friendly and happy to chat.

Three courses, a bottle of wine, coffee and liqueurs for two cost £77. This was the best dining experience we have had for a long time and certainly somewhere to take that someone special.

P.S. not to be confused with Piccollino, which we are sure is nice but not where we were.

Everest (Heeley) - Doreen and Mike -

Rating:

If you want a great welcome, excellent service and a great choice of delicious food then this is the place to be.

We have had many successful family occasions here over the last twelve years. The staff are happy to help us explore the wide choice of meals on the menu and we have had some wonderful surprises.

In our opinion the Everest is sky high, but the meal prices are not. This restaurant is a real gem.

Piccolos (City Centre) - Ashley Dacre -

Rating:

Food was amazing! It was a little pricey but it definitely falls under the category "you get what you pay for" and the service was perfect.

I live in north Wales and took my girlfriend to Sheffield for Valentine's day. If and when we go back we will certainly make sure we will not be leaving without going back to Piccolo's!

Parthenonas (Highfield) - Ashley Dacre -

Rating:

Do not listen to the person who has given just 1 star for this restaurant, as they clearly have a chip on their shoulder!

Waiter was very kind and courteous, food was delicious (which we did not have to wait long for), and the portions were so good we could not have fitted any dessert!

Well worth going!

Casanova Pizzeria Ristorante (Crookes) - Sarah -

Rating:

Went on Valentines day... really bad experience!

Food was terrible and when I mentioned that my calamari wasn't very nice the waiter told me that it was supposed to be cooked like this and that there was nothing wrong with my food!

I felt embarrassed and that I wasn't valued as a customer at all.

Won't make the same mistake again!

Everest (Heeley) - Paul Hattam -

Rating:

This is not a one-off review, I speak with experience.

Genuine people who are really proud of the food they are turning out. They should be. I have eaten many times over the past year or so and always had a great experience.

The special menu deserves a mention - authentic food with real taste. If you ask nicely, you can be more adventurous and try dishes not on the menu like the lamb "off the bone". You'll be well looked after and enjoy some great cuisine.

If you're looking for flash city centre places then this ain't the place but you can do so much better than that. A couple of miles out of town and you'll find this little gem - great value for money and 100 yards from a real ale pub (the White Lion). Give it a go!

Ye Olde Mustard Pot (Midhopestones) - Tony Reed -

Rating:

My wife and I visited on Saturday 11th February. We have visited several times before for Sunday lunch and have enjoyed the food. But on this visit things were different.

On ordering the steak burger I was informed there was no coleslaw, which was to accompany the burger and chips. So I decided to have the steak and vegetable pie and chips instead. My wife had the lamb casserole with mash.

The food finally arrived around 40 minutes later. What a disappointment. The steak pie was very nice, not sure where the vegetables were. The chunky chips were very nice, as long as you are not very hungry, there were 7 of them. But what was more disappointing was the lack of vegetables on the plate, it just did not look like a meal and was certainly not filling, and at just short of £10 was certainly not value for money.

My wife's stew was served with mashed potatoes but there was so much gravy, the mash just turned to mush. Not very appealing.

We gave our comments to the waitress, who was apologetic and said that they had inherited the menu, but how much would it cost to put a few vegetables on the plate? She did offer a free drink but we had driven there and already had more to drink than we would normally have due to waiting so long for the food. So We declined.

All in all this was a very dissapointing meal and would not recommend at all.

I did email the Mustard Pot directly. But with no reply so far.

Zing Vaa (City Centre) - Rebecca -

Rating:

Awesome!

You have to try the Shanghai dumplings and the drunken beef.

I will be trying other dishes tomorrow night (Valentine's) when my boyfriend takes me again. It's all we've talked about since our last visit and it's the best place either of us have eaten. We had three courses and a bottle of wine and enjoyed every aspect of it. The staff are awesome.

The prices will wow you. I bought all-sorts and my heart did a little hop skip and jump when I looked at the bill and it was half of what I expected. I left a weighty tip!

Can't wait to go back, I really can't stress how lovely it is there.

La Luna (Banner Cross) - Andrew Stork -

Rating:

Some people might say that this place is a nice, cosy, rustic Italian, but not in our experience or opinion.

Firstly we had to wait 10 minutes to be seated on a busy Saturday night, however our table sat empty and clean for those 10 minutes and we stood waiting holding our bottle of wine.

We ordered calamari for a starter, but were told 10 minutes later that they had run out of this, even on a busy Saturday night (the waitress said that this wasn't their fault - whose restaurant is it?).

The female waitress recommended a duck pancake, which tasted beyond dreadful.

Our main courses came 30 minutes after a couple who came in ten minutes after us.

We asked the waitress for a fork as we weren't provided additional cutlery from the starter, which never materialised. When I explained this to the waitress she said, "try and enjoy your meal we will sort it out after".

However, when we went to pay they wanted to charge us full price until I reminded them of the ridiculously poor service we had received. Only then did they remove 25% off the final bill (had to be given as cash back).

As I said at the start, some may say this is a nice, cosy Italian restaurant, which it is, but the food and service do not match up. Needless to say, we will never return here again.

Balti King (Broomhill) - Bill -

Rating:

Visit to Balti King last night.

Great service, they will cook you anything you want even if it is not on the menu. Mind you their menu is very extensive. Great vegetarian options. You decide when you want your courses served, did not feel rushed at all.

Used their voucher, there is nowhere in Sheffield with this value-for-money food. Great night.
