Wortley Arms (Wortley) - Chris Hanson -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We went to the Wortley Arms last Tuesday night for a meal and found the food in the pub too pretentious for what we would look for in a local pub. We thought the pub was trying too hard to be something it isn't and falling short of the mark in terms of what it does aspire to.

I had the trio of pork dish from the menu, and while you could see the ambition in the food there were a few simple things that let it down in my mind. The crackling was not crisp on the belly, the little pork fillet or loin was over cooked and dry and there was hardly any gravy on the plate. Whilst the presentation was good, the mistakes made me regret the amount I spent on the dish.

My other gripe with the pub was the price of drinks. £3 for a pint of Timothy Taylor is too expensive in my book in this day and age.

My wife's meal also suffered similar pitfalls, over-cooked guinea fowl and a garnish that didn't really suit the dish. Another thing if you ever decide to visit the Wortley Arms is don't bother ordering any vegetables, over-priced and rubbish. £3 I think for a bowl of under-cooked carrots and celeriac.

The plus points were the service, which was friendly and professional, and the cheese on the cheese board, which was nice.

Silversmiths (City Centre) - Chloe -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We went here on a Saturday night after seeing a review in Exposed magazine. Initially recognised as "Runaway Girl" the decor has changed (but for the better) and the welcome and service was exceptional. The staff were knowledgeable of the food and wine, very polite and attentive.

I had the smoked fish risotto for starters and it was amazing! My other half had the salt beef and that was also great (portions were huge, too). I had the venison sausage (as brought to the restaurant by Gordon Ramsay), which was good and the cod that Ki had was excellent. We shared a bottle of red, which was deep and rich and then the chocolate and marshmallow fondue for desert.

We were told that Ramsay made the changes last year as Runaway Girl was "confused!". Silversmiths isn't. It's honest, Yorkshire-grown food, served in an unpretentious relaxed environment with great service. Will definitely go again.

Mangla (Burngreave) - Matt Wood -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Despite it being a post-Christmas Tuesday evening (6PM), I was surprised and somewhat encouraged by the number of diners. The welcome was warm and the service was swift, although I was slightly perturbed by drinks served in cans (yes really) and the only beverage being of the non-alcoholic variety. 'Bring your own' is an option, and one that I would definitely exercise next time.

The food was served in double quick time, almost too quickly, although I suspect it was in anticipation of the late night herd. The servings were generous too, hot (as in cooked) and perfectly amenable to a well honed Indian palette.

Whilst I can't wax lyrical about the food, the resultant bill helps explain why this is worthy of recommendation. I accept there is more than a hint of 'takeaway' about the whole experience, but that is exactly this place is about, a restaurant serving good takeaway food.

If you are expecting top service and carefully prepared Indian cuisine then this is not the place for you. On the other hand, if you are expecting excellent value and good, honest Indian food then you won't be disappointed. I wasn't. That said, there is room for improvement in service and presentation. The restaurant still feels a bit like a dining room and a license for serving alcohol wouldn't go amiss, either.

Not great in terms of dining experience but excellent value for money. Whilst the food is nothing to write home about, the price and value more than makes up for it.

La Luna (Banner Cross) - Philip Owen -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

A very simple Italian restaurant with good food and a good atmosphere. There is a wine shop across the road with a good selection of wines, so there's no worry about running out. Just don't sit by the door on a cold night.

El Paso (City Centre) - Sarah Johns -

Great food, good atmosphere, but not ideal if you're looking for a romantic meal for 2. Much better if there's a few of you.

El Paso (City Centre) - Kate Wright -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We visited El Paso for our annual Christmas party and we all agreed it was one of the best nights out we had in a long time.

The music was great and of a good mix. The food was amazing. You just have to go again. The upstairs disco provided the perfect finish to our meal.

Highly recommended for these reasons, food was well cooked and presented. Waiting staff were extremely efficient and attentive but not annoyingly so, ambience perfect - was so glad we tried and will definitely return.

Enjoy!

Vito's (Walkley) - Lynn Hughes -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

This has to be one of the best evenings I've had. My sister in law had eaten at Vito's before moving to America. Between her and Vito a surprise birthday meal was arranged. Superb food, hospitality that was second to none - without a doubt a firm favourite for a special occasion or just a treat to escape mid week cooking! Booked for staff Christmas 'do' as I can be confident it'll be a winner with everyone. Thanks to everyone at Vito's - and of course my sister in law!

BB's (City Centre) - Mark Wright -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have been to BB's many times before but this was the first visit in a while. I was reminded of what I had been missing.

The food and service was excellent, and you can take your own wine if you wish (although the restaurant does serve alcohol).

The atmosphere was a little on the loud side, but this is to be expected on a Saturday night. The overall experience was excellent.

I had fillet steak (Filetto Al Pepe) and it was the best steak I've had for as long as I can remember.

Ego at Dore Moor Inn (Dore) - Barry Tipper -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We have been going to the Dore Moor for years and always enjoyed the food, relaxing atmosphere and spaciousness.

However, we went a few months ago and, although the menu looked almost the same as before, it had been taken over by new owners, or managers.

My food was almost inedible. I ordered pork stuffed with pears. Both pieces of pork were well done, to say the least. One, I couldn't even get my knife to cut. I complained and continued struggling with the other piece until I got it replaced. The waitress commented that this dish was brought in partially cooked. I wasn't too keen on that idea, either. My wife's dish faired better, but still seemed to lack the former Dore Moor touch.

Needless to say, we haven't been back since.

We tried the more local Admiral Rodney, on Loxley Road, which appears to belong to the same chain of pubs. I went for the pork again, for comparison and I still fancied trying it properly cooked. It was lovely.

Vito's (Walkley) - Mark Bishop -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Just been to the best Italian restaurant I have been to in the last year. Took 10 members of my staff for a leaving party. Every one of them was thrilled with the authentic quality of the food. The service was sensational. House wine was of an excellent standard and the quality of the meal was superb. Thanks to all the staff for the effort they put in. Vito, count us in for next year!

Walkley Cottage Inn (Walkley) - Nick -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Always been great food and drink at this suburban pub, it has recently been refurbished and remains serving splendid food at very good prices. Been in twice recently, lovely fish and chips and a very tasty burger. Good chips are rare and always indicate a good cook.

Wide range on menu and fast friendly service. Simply a very good pub.

Devonshire Arms (Dore) - Kate Fellis -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We went to this restaurant for the third time last Saturday, 8th November, and for the third time had an excellent meal. There were 4 of us and we all opted for Tapas, which are reasonably priced and a good portion size. I can recommend the black pudding and chorizo potage and spicy potatoes.

If Tapas isn't your thing there is a good choice on the main menu and also daily specials, but haven't yet tried this option so can't comment on the value.

The only disappointing thing is the atmosphere on each occasion there were very few diners. Customers cannot know about it, the food is good, please try it!

Yama Sushi Noodle Bar (City Centre) - Jason Caan -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

This has got to be the best sushi house in Sheffield! Although it is small and only seats about 20 people, its decor is trendy and the sushi is to die for. The sushi chef is stood behind the counter and you can actually see the fish in the glass chiller before it's cut. The cooked food, particularly, the chicken cutlet with Japanese curry is exceptional, similar to what I tasted when I was in the Far East. Definitely recommended!

We had an enjoyable evening and lovely meal at this restaurant last weekend. The service was friendly and efficient and the food was delicious. We had been to this venue when it was Runaway Girl and we were surprised but delighted with the recent changes. Shall definitely go back in the near future.

Dam House (Crookesmoor) - Christian Fletcher -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

30th October 2008

I've known about the Dam House for as long as I can remember, as I grew up in the area. But having moved away from Sheffield nearly a decade ago, I revisited with my wife for her big 3-0. I thought it was time to give it a go, turns out that an old college mate is now the bar manager, not seen him for 11 years, names recognised, normal service resumed. On the night we went it wasn't very busy, but that means nothing at the moment. The welcome from the staff was very warm and friendly. It was my friend's night off though. My wife and I both had a drink at the bar before we took our table. A bottle of house white with online voucher. We were not rushed into ordering, which is good because the menu was just too good to choose from.

I had the king prawns with chilli (5 cooked to perfection). My wife chose crab and pea risotto, very moist, full of flavour and not small.

We both selected the lamb rump with minted sauce accompanied by buttered baby vegetables. HUGE! I wanted rare, Nicki wanted medium, and no surprise that we got just what we wanted, melt in the mouth.

After a short rest we had dessert, mine was bread and butter sticky toffee pudding, (my two favourite desserts in one) moist and filling. My wife had the custard tart, creamy and rich.

I couldn't help myself but went for cheese and biscuits, I've never seen so many biscuits, good selection of cheese, sweet blue, port salut and one I cant remember. Coffee wasn't needed.

The bill only came to £55 for both of us, which overall for the quality we had was excellent value. I will recommend this restaurant to anybody any time.

We had spare time the following Sunday after a day with family, so we went back to get a quick bite to eat. My mate was working that day, the same warm welcome, relaxed atmosphere. Quick bite to eat turned into 2 courses each.

Nicki had tian of smoked chicken, I had the Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Again both were to the same high standard.

The mains were roast rib of beef, two thick slices of rare beef and the same Yorkies as the starter. The gravy was just so good.

We were taken care of by Richard, and if he reads this, cheers mate!

Two visits and both get 100% for atmosphere, service and quality.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Martin Revitt -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

My family and I dined at Marco at Milano on Saturday and found it to be very good. The service was excellent, the food was tasty throughout and the wine was good. Of the actual food we ate most people opted for very tasty spicy veal & port meatballs in tomato sauce. However they were served on a bed of rocket and would have been improved if this had been a small amount of pasta instead.

The main courses sampled were duck, ribeye steak and lamb and all greatly enjoyed. One of my usual complaints in restaurants is that you have to pay extra for vegetables and that when they arrive they are far from inspiring. At Marco's however they are included in the price of the mains (and a good job too!) and were excellent.

Enjoyable desserts finished the meal, with the cheese board being particularly good and those that had deserts that included ice cream gave it a special mention.

On the negative side the measures of port that those of us who had the cheese ordered were meagre, the atmosphere is a little cold and it is expensive. My brother had come up from where he lives in Islington and commented that the prices were more expensive than most places in London! Certainly the average prices stated on this website are incorrect. Average starters are £8, mains £18 and deserts £7 (cheese board was £9 but would serve 2 if not 3 people). The excellent Sauvignon Blanc we drank was £20 a bottle.

In summary I will certainly visit again although the prices make it more of a special occasion treat than regular haunt. Also you will probably need to book 2-3 weeks ahead to get a table.

Vito's (Walkley) - Karen Latimer -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

This is the perfect restaurant for any Italian food lovers out there. My husband and I went recently and were really impressed by the menu selection and particularly the generous portions.

I had previously been to Zizzi and ordered the mozzarella, avocado and tomato salad, which had been really disappointing. Admittedly there was a generous portion of mozzarella but it must have included a just a quarter of a tomato and an almond sized piece of avocado... sliced into 4 (impressive culinary skills if I wasn't hungry!) - the one I had in Vito's was stunning in comparison. It must have included a whole avocado and several tomatoes and everything tasted fresh and perfect.

They also serve lots of Italian dishes that you can't find on any other Italian menu in town such as the soup with squid and chickpeas, which is just gorgeous.

My husband is a meat lover and always enjoys the choice of steaks. We must have been there 20 times and every meal is perfect and the service warm, friendly and efficient. We are very lucky to live nearby!

El Paso (City Centre) - Tom and Bridget Holmes -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

If you like Mexican food then El Paso is one restaurant not to miss. The owner and the chef personally ensure that the food and service is first class. Special mention should be given to the waiters for making every customer feel special. We have been customers here for 2 years and have never had a bad meal or bad service. We normally join in on the disco and learn some new salsa moves after our meal. This is by far our favourite restaurant.

Rafters (Ranmoor) - Paul Gorner -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Four of us visited Rafters for the first time on Saturday night. I find it hard to believe that I am the first person to review this restaurant. I have eaten at most of Sheffield's so-called premier eateries, and on the whole been very satisfied.

Rafters, in my opinion, is head and shoulders above the rest. I can't say enough about this place. Everything about the meal and service was excellent. If you are a serious foodie I urge you to visit Rafters - you wont be dissapointed.10/10

Went to Silversmiths for the first time Saturday night (18/10/08). I was a bit apprehensive at first, but the food & service were excellent, along with value. I will definitely be going back. Highly recommended.
