El Paso (City Centre) - Paul Jenkins -

In order to celebrate my girlfriend's 21st birthday I wanted a restaurant that was atmospheric and most of all, served amazing food. Last night I discovered such a place.

A friend recommended El Paso and I booked it immediately. I then read the reviews on this site, which were all great reviews.

The food was wonderful. We both shared a dish of fresh mussels choritos with some brushcetta, which was delicious, just the way they should be. Service was not rushed, nor annoyingly slow and after a short-ish interval, our mains arrived. We both had chicken dishes. The bill came to just below £40 (including a bottle of Italian red wine). The food is amazing.

Would I go again? Try and stop me. Should you? Highly recommended.

La Romantica (Heeley) - Christine Wright -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We have been eating here for many years now and come here for all occasions including birthdays, valentines and Christmas. The food is amazing, especially the homemade pizza-style garlic breads and homemade chips.

Generous portion sizes even for big eaters.

We come here with friends and family, and the grandkids love watching the chef cooking in the open plan kitchen.

The staff are very welcoming and the chef will cook food however you like it.

We will continue to eat here for many years to come as will our children and grandchildren. Fantastic!

Silversmiths (City Centre) - David Oldershaw -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Very impressed by the light touch of the chefs in the kitchen.

Our meal for 2 on 29/4/2009 started with prawns and a pear salad. It's so easy to serve undercooked (for fear of over cooking them) or overcooked prawns that are like elastic bands. Thankfully ours were cooked to perfection. Whilst the slices of pears were on the 'crunchy' side, the dressing on the salad and prawns was light, fruity and perfectly balanced for the 2 main ingredients.

I didn't taste my companion's main course although she said it was a very good flaky tart of some description (the food not her), as I didn't want to have to share any of my pigeon with new potatoes. Again, a meat that is difficult to get right, I was served 2 perfectly cooked breasts along with some slices of new potatoes and salad leaves. Again, the accompanying dressing and some intense jammy/confit of whatever was superb.

We both had a large glass of wine and although my Malbec was pricey it was a great glass of velvety fruityness.

Not a big one for deserts I opted for the cheese (3 types), which came with plenty of crackers. My friend had a weird concoction of brioche with minted bananas - yes, minted bananas. The mint was very subtle (I did get a taste of this in exchange for some smoked cheese I wasn't keen on), so subtle it was hardly worth it. We found out after that this was its first outing on the menu and probably its last as it was a damp squib compared to the rest of the meal.

Overall, excellent value at £45 for the 2 of us, bearing in mind my expensive glass of red and somewhere I would go back to quite soon.

El Paso (City Centre) - Stephanie Jenkins -

Amazing Latin American food and I loved the atmosphere. I've been to El Paso on numerous occasions and it really is a great experience and have to say that I agree with all the reviews posted here. It is a fantastic establishment.

All of the food we ate was simply fantastic. But I have to say personally that the fajitas were to die for. I work not too far away and have recommended this place to so many people, not only at work - but also locally to where I live, and they have also been there, and it is safe to say that they are all of the same opinion. Great food, great service. Definitely worth a visit!

I have been going to this place for the last 9 years and I'm still going! Very welcoming and professional.

I really enjoy Indian food and in the past I've been able to eat at a lot of them up and down the country due to work commitments, and you'd be hard pressed to beat Everest Tandoori.

Please try mumtaz methi gosht, pilau rice and peshwari nan sweet one you will love them.

Piccolos (City Centre) - Darren Beadsley -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Not good at all I'm afraid, especially compared with other established Italians in the area.

The menu is extremely dull with everything you would expect on a basic Italian menu but no surprises or special touches... lasagne, spag bol, garlic bread. This would be OK if the food was up to scratch. My partner had the lasagne, which we both thought tasted pre bought... very readymeal-ish. My steak, which cost £18, was small and bland, served with re-cooked vegetables. The menu as a whole was extremely expensive for what you are getting, which seemed to be pre-cooked, or pre-bought food.

Wong Ting (City Centre) - Natasha Crawford -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

The service that we received at this restaurant was absolutely disgusting. You will either get ignored or speak to a member of staff that cannot speak English.

The food is reasonable but always cold. My sister and I went for a meal today and had to wait 2 hours for our main course, which we ended up sending back and only paying for what we ate. The staff were still rude to us and threw the bill at our table and muttered under their breath.

I would recommend anybody who wants at least an OK standard of service to not go here.

Devonshire Arms (Dore) - Vicky Camplin -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

My husband and I, my mother-in-law, and my three children went here on Mother's Day. Granted it was Mother's Day and you'd expect a short wait for your meal but we got there at 12:30PM and had to wait an hour and a half for our food. Absolutely ridiculous.

We have been here several times before and it's not taken as long as it did today. We had to have a special menu and not use the normal menu as well, so it was very expensive. The staff didn't apologise for the wait or tell me that there'd be a special menu on. We won't be coming back.

Everest (Heeley) - Laura Talbot -

Everest epitomizes the casual, caring and harmonious qualities that I had often heard of as being synonymous with the Indian sub-continent. Not only do they serve great meals but also make an effort to know you and greet you personally each time you visit them.

I try convincing everyone to celebrate their birthdays at Everest all the time. The last time I went there for an anniversary celebration, all of us - from 2 to 72 were equally pleased at the experience.

The earthy ambience, radiant smiles from staff and customized food, makes it a perfectly refreshing experience every time I visit. Thanks guys!

Maranello's (Sharrow Vale) - Charles Hoyland -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Went with friends for a birthday celebration. Maranello's is on Ecclesall Road, in what used to be Trattoria Romana. New name; same awful seats. We vowed not to go back to Trattoria Romana, as the seats are the worst we have ever sat on in a restaurant. They look like they were made from the rods used in reinforced concrete, and are so uncomfortable it spoilt our evening out a couple of years ago.

The next downer was the prices. We eat in Italian restaurants regularly, and were surprised at how expensive a lot of the dishes were. Apart from soup and bruschetta (£4.50) nearly all the starters were in the £6-£8 range. Mains too were expensive apart from the pizza and pasta options. My wife had baked cod; decent, but over-priced at £15. I had seafood spaghetti; nowhere near as good as is served elsewhere in Sheffield.

We were brought dessert menus, and it reminded us of being in Spain on holiday, where you walk past a restaurant and all the meals are shown as pictures so you know what egg, chips and beans actually looks like. Here, the desserts - bought-in - are shown pictorially in case you had difficulty visualising ice cream.

We waited for ages; nobody came to ask us what we wanted so when they did we decided not to bother and requested the bill. When it came, we had been charged for more drinks than we actually had. They did apologise, and quickly rectified the error but the whole experience from the horrible seats to the over-priced food and indifferent service meant we left regretting that we didn't book elsewhere.

Cubana (City Centre) - Rachel -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I decided to look at the other reviews of Cubana and was utterly shocked!

I was taken there as a surprise on Valentine's Day and was totally impressed. The service was warm and friendly, we were frequently asked if we were OK or wanted drinks and everything was brought quickly.

The food was a set Tapas menu and we thought it was great, very flavoursome and plentiful.

The atmosphere was particularly good! We ate late so they were finishing service, the tables were all moved aside to create a dance floor. The music was traditional and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

I was looking forward to going again but I'm less sure now. Maybe I'll just leave my opinion of my amazing evening untainted and enjoy the memories

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Helen Roach -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Friendly staff who knew the menu well, delicious food, and although the prices are on the upper end for Sheffield, it was well worth it.

Chef was able to accommodate our off-menu requests. We did have to put down a £10 per person deposit for Saturday night but this was transferable.

On the whole a memorable experience for the right reasons.

Vito's (Walkley) - Tamlin McPherson -

Another fantastic night. Vito opened his restaurant so my friend and I could celebrate a birthday. The service was superb, the food was outstanding and the wine is without compare in Sheffield.

El Paso (City Centre) - Laura Jameson -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I came to Sheffield for Valentine's Day with my boyfriend for the weekend. On the first night we were looking for somewhere to eat. El Paso looked inviting from the website and the extensive menu was very appealing so we decided to book.

The restaurant's atmosphere was cosy and romantic and it is the ideal place in which to share an intimate meal with a partner or indeed with a group of friends/family.

Staff were extremely attentive and efficient and the food was amazing. I have never eaten a steak cooked more perfectly in my life. We loved our evening there so much that we knew no other restaurant could compete with it...so the next night we returned and had another fabulous meal. Excellent.

Saigon68 (Highfield) - Emily Knowles -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We've been to this Vietnamese cafe/restaurant a few times and always had a great meal. There is quite a lengthy menu, but staff are happy to advise on dishes. There are plenty of vegetarian options and the portions are big so it works out really good value. After you can pop next door to the Cremorne pub, which has good beers on!

Silversmiths (City Centre) - Caroline Hart -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

This is a great independent restaurant and the Tuesday night special pie night (superb!) has become a sell-out. I was there last week and saw people turned away because the restaurant was fully booked, the advice being to reserve a table at least a week in advance.

They also do chefs special menus on Wednesdays and Thursdays with a more limited menu but again excellent food. It's literally on the doorstep of Sheffield Hallam University (city campus) and well worth checking out.

El Paso (City Centre) - Brett -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Complete rubbish, and we didn't even manage to get any food!

We made a booking over the phone a week in advance, turned up and it was shut! It was supposed to be open and we received nothing to say there would be any problem with our booking, so I advise anyone against going there, because even if you do make a booking, you may end up making a wasted journey!

Silversmiths (City Centre) - Tim Fleck -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We tried to book a party of 20 well in advance and they told us that they had a policy only to book parties of no more than 10. So when we asked if we could split our party into 2 tables of 10 they refused still! We were ready to pay up front and give our menu choices in advance, but apparently in a recession they can afford to turn away parties of 20. Unbelievable, I'm sure there are many other restaurants in Sheffield will be happy to take our money. Very poor indeed.

Dam House (Crookesmoor) - Louise -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I read the review on here and booked a Sunday lunch for 8 for my best friends and their partners. The venue has all the right ideas, fresh flowers, nice decor etc... but that is lost when you sit down to eat.

We ordered about 2PM and had already been told that there was no lamb, one portion of pork left and one portion of melon left. The melon came out and it was slimy, brown and looked like it was from a tin! We sent it back and received a free drink for it and an exchange.

The main then came about 30 minutes later even though the restaurant was far from busy (good job really as there were only 2 staff on, including the manager). I had the risotto that was as tasteless and bland as they come, I actually had to season it myself! The burger, although looked home-made was golf ball shaped and the chips cold. Sunday dinner was wilted and grim, the potato looked like what we had a school! We all ate as much as we felt polite and then moved back to the lounge.

We ordered some champagne and they only had the £70 Bolly or £50 Verve, said no to both to which the manager gave us the verve for £30! We all drank up and left (hungry and slightly disheartened) that a great afternoon out was just a bit bland. Service was OK, just didn't have the food to back it up.

Once again, nowhere good to get a Sunday dinner in Sheffield.

Shapla (City Centre) - Tabatha -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

After eating at Shapla we never bother with any of the other Indian restaurants in Sheffield. We used to go to Nirmals or the Himalayan but haven't been back since trying the Shapla.

The food is wonderfully flavourful. The special marsala is a particular favourite and my daughter, who is a tarka dahl expert, tells me it is one of the best. Their home cooked chips are amazing and even though I don't really believe in chips with curry I can't resist them. The staff are wonderfully friendly and I was amazed to read a negative review.

The restaurant has been expanded but they have retained the amazing murals and all the ladies still get given a flower to go home with. They also do a takeaway service and I have driven to town on many occasions for this. Like any restaurant in the city centre it is probably best not to visit late on a Friday or Saturday to see it at its best. We always go early evening and the food and service is second to none.
