Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Neil Flint -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Have visited this restaurant twice and both times been impressed with the service and quality of the food.

On the first occasion my partner and I had a few drinks before coming across the restaurant unexpectedly. On the second visit we took my brother and sister-in-law, who were equally impressed.

The moules marnierre starter and red snapper were lovely, but everything was cooked well and to order... will be going back shortly!

Everest (Heeley) - Steve Dowds -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We've been eating in Everest probably twice per month for at least 10 years. It is not just the best Indian restaurant in Sheffield, it is one of the best in the country.

The food is fantastic. The staff are efficient and friendly and the service is excellent. They anticipate every need and remember regular customers' preferences, to the point where all I have to do is walk in and they serve the beer I want without me even having to ask for it! Perfect.

One weekend we couldn't come in as I was unwell. When the staff at Everest heard we couldn't come in, they delivered our favourite meal to our house, even though we live some miles away outside their regular delivery area. I can't commend them highly enough.

The food is absolutely excellent. Go for the Chicken Tikka Karai to start and then have a Chicken Handy - I think these are the best dishes on the menu. But if you want to experiment and try something not on the menu, they'll do that, too.

It is unrivalled value for money - I've eaten in places in London & Manchester where the food wasn't half as good as in Everest but they charged 4 times what Everest do.

Go there. You won't be disappointed, it's the best. (Just don't go at 9PM on a Friday - I want to get my regular table!)

Frankie & Benny's (Attercliffe) - Abbey -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Really nice food!

The chicken was slightly overdone but the pizza was so tasty. The service was OK and the food was good value for money. Portion sizes were a little on the small side.

However, it was thoroughly enjoyable and a good night out. Strongly recommend trying anything with brownies in for dessert.

Almas Indian Brasserie (Dore) - Tom Colton -

Rating:

Had around a dozen meals at Almas over a 2-year period and can honestly say this is by far the best Indian restaurant in Sheffield, and I've been to most of them!

The latest episode at this quality establishment occurred a couple of weeks ago.

To start with the service is fantastic, you are never left waiting for things or embarrassed to get the waiter's attention. It really is top notch attentive service and the food always arrives promptly.

The food itself is great, the tandoori selection is majestic to say the least. Really fresh prawns or superbly marinated chicken. They also cater for vegetarians and do interesting dishes using mussels and ingredients not usually found on an Indian restaurant menu. You are constantly left with a dilemma over what to order, as all the dishes I've tasted are equally as exquisite.

The decor itself is understated, yet chic and cosy. White linen and uplighting adding to the fine dining, yet comfortable, ambience. In addition, its size lends itself to intimacy, rather than the cattle market feel of other restaurants.

Prices are on the higher side of what you would pay at an average Indian restaurant. But make no mistake this restaurant is worth it! And you always leave feeling you have got value for money.

I would highly recommend anyone who has not sampled the delights of this top place to do so immediately. Perfect for taking a date or even as a family thing, Almas gets 5 stars every time!

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Ellie Thompson -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I went there this week and I was not very impressed with the service or food. The pizzas were tiny, they didn't fit the small plate they were on, I thought they were kids' portions.

Although the prices aren't too high, you definitely do not get what you pay for. The bacon and chicken salad wasn't much better; chunks of overcooked chicken with little flavouring at all.

I have lived in Sheffield a few years, and thought I was missing out by not visiting this restaurant, this is the opposite of the case, I would never go back.

ASK Italian (City Centre) - James Burkinshaw -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Went to Ask at the weekend, the service was good and so was the food. The problems started after the meal.

My daughter likes to do her number twos in private (she's 2 years old) so she went under the table to do the deed in her nappy. After a minute or so we checked on her and found a mass of chewing gum on the underside of the table.

I couldn't find any changing facilities for my daughter so I changed her in the men's toilets, where the chef left a cubicle and didn't wash his hands, just went straight out, followed by a waiter using the urinal and not washing his hands, either.

I was told by the manager that the chef has his own washing facilities - the sink in the open kitchen! And we only have his word for that.

Don't think I will be going back.

Everest (Heeley) - Mona Rehman -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I went for my 21st birthday and I loved every bit of it. They had decorated the hall for me and arranged a buffet system for me. The cost was around £15 per head

The staff and the management team were very professional and polite.

I will be returning to this restaurant on a regular basis and I would recommend everyone to come and taste their food.

El Paso (City Centre) - Keef Wright -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

All the food was excellent. They made one mistake with the food but quickly rectified it. The music was a little loud but soon got used to it with a couple of Peronis in me.

3 starters and mains came to £57. It doesn't look much from the outside, but is very nice inside, and the food is what it's about for me.

I went to Everest the other night with a friend of mine. I had not been for some time. The place looked bright and fresh and the staff where as friendly as I remembered.

We had papadoms and the pickle tray to start whilst we took our time deciding what to have. I can't remember the name of the dish I had, it was lamb not too hot and very, very tasty. My friend had a chicken dish, which she loved. We both had a couple of Indian lagers.

I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff and the food. We will be going again really soon.

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Julie Revill -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We ate at Mama's & Leonies on 14/05/2010, what a big mistake. The chicken tikka was dry and burnt, the jacket potato looked as though it had been cooked sometime the week before, as it was a light brown in the middle, not white as it should have been. Also there was too much salad on plates, so as not to have to add more chips I take it.

The blonde waitress had no idea how to serve food correctly, passing it in front of my eating companion from my right. She was aggressive when she spoke to us. We were hounded to order even though the restaurant was not busy.

When we did complain about the food, nothing was resolved, as we were told we should have said earlier. No money was knocked off at all. The chefs in the kitchen were scary looking, too. And definitely not Italian at all, if anyone was.

The meal was very expensive as well, not a bargain enjoyable meal. The seats were uncomfortable chairs that were nearly as old as me, at 51. They moved about and we thought they would collapse at one point.

Don 't go there its awful, honest!

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - John Fazman -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Went there the other night with high expectations and to be honest I was disappointed. I thought the food was expensive for what it was and despite the remarks about everything being home cooked food I was left questioning that.

I had the squid to start and was left in little doubt that this had been prepared for some time. The venison steak was just OK and the portion of vegetables that the 4 of us had to share was neither adequate nor did it look as though the kitchen could be bothered.

Whilst the staff were very friendly the place itself has a worn outdated feel to it (the table cloth had holes in it and the jug of water presented did not look to have been cleaned properly). The menus need updating and the place could without doubt do with an overhaul. Whilst they may have a few loyal clientele this place needs a Gordon Ramsay-style makeover. So I am afraid I will not be returning.

Otto Damahi (owner) responded on 17th May 2010:
I co-own the Mediterranean and wish to respond to our latest review. The squid is cooked to order. I'm sorry you failed to realise that. The venison steak is the best lean cut from Round Green venison farm in Penistone. You can verify this very easily should you wish to do so. Noone has ever described it as merely OK. As for the vegetables you could have simply let us know that you wanted more and we would have obliged. They are included in the price unlike some other restaurants. What exactly did you mean by the kitchen could not be bothered? Your comment was unclear.

We serve all our main courses with different garnishes as well as side vegetables which are dauphinoise potatoes, courgettes and carrots. Our decor is not shiny and new and never has been. Our customers come to us time and again because they appreciate our character and the atmosphere.

We are primarily a fish restaurant and we offer a choice of over twelve kinds of fish, all of them prepared and cooked differently. For example, our fillet of turbot baked in the oven and served on a bed of mashed potatoes with a saffron and lemon beurre blanc and garnished with king prawns and mussels is one of the best sellers at the moment so what did you mean by our menus needed updating?

The Mediterranean Restaurant is run by professional chefs and owners with over 27 years experience in the hospitality industry and we are confident of the cleanliness, hygiene and quality of our product. (See Scores on the Doors). We don't need Gordon Ramsay as you suggested.

I just find it a shame that you never mentioned anything at the time. Customers have a responsibility to let any restaurant know what they require. Some of the points you mention could have very quickly been addressed had you chosen to mention them to the staff. Posting a negative review instead is hardly fair or helpful.

I am sure other restaurant owners would agree, even Gordon Ramsay himself.

I went to Everest last week with a couple of friends. It was excellent service with delicious food!

To begin with I had karahi tikka chicken for my starter. The taste was beautiful. And for my main course I had Mumtaz Methi Gosht with garlic nan. It was divine.

I've booked for my birthday party next month for 20 people and I'm looking forward to showing my family & friends one of the best Indian restaurants I've ever been to!

East & West (Nether Edge) - Sonia Lancaster -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

If you want to eat real, authentic south Indian food then this is the place for you. Loosely described as a "restaurant", the place has a welcoming and homely feel to it; anyway once the food has arrived you totally forget your surroundings!

Starting with chili paneer, followed by a Masala Dosa - that crispy rice and lentil paper-thin pancake stuffed with tasty potato curry, served with lentil and vegetable stew (Sambar), coconut chutney and another chutney, all finished off with Ras mali.

The cost of 3 courses for 3 people plus drinks (not licensed) was £38 and I can't remember when I've had a better meal in a long time at 4 times the cost. It's obvious that others think so, too, with the numbers of people coming through the doors. Can't wait to visit again!

Rowsha (Walkley) - Sarah -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I had a meal here with my boyfriend about a month ago. We were absolutely happy with the service and with our food. The woman who served us was also very friendly. I would say this is the best Lebanese restaurant I've been to in Sheffield.

However, the second time I had food from there, I had it delivered. I have to say the delivery guy was very rude and very disrespectful. Ever since then, I've never ordered food from them. I prefer to go to the restaurant as the service was much better over there.

Cricket Inn (Totley) - David -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We've been to the Cricket Inn and other Richard Smith places around Sheffield loads of times but feel that it has now become very repetitive, corners are being cut and something that was once really good now feels like the sort of chain that would be better avoided.

The food wasn't bad, just OK. Choice was not as good as it used to be and the printed menu looked like something from a Beefeater-type place. Sad because it used to be far better than all the other pubs offering food.

I think we'll be looking elsewhere in future.

Papa Ciccio's (Crosspool) - Kadr -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have been there for two years and every time I go there I really enjoy the food.

The staff are very friendly and polite when I eat in Papa Ciccios and I feel I eat in a family restaurant in Italy.

I recommended to some friends and they all have the same feeling as I have in Papa Ciccios.

Everest (Heeley) - Hazel Poole -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Me, my partner and two friends went to the Everest on Friday 12th March. I have never been before; the other people in the party had been and said it was lovely. It is an Indian as you are probably aware but as we got there we were all greeted warmly and pleasant by the owner of the restaurant. We got drinks at the bar and waited just a few minutes for a table.

Me and my partner had poppadoms and a pickle tray, which were lovely. We had onion bhaji to share and I must say it was lovely. I've had onion bhajis in the past at restaurants and they can be completely dry. For mains I had a standard chicken and mushroom curry, my partner had a chicken madras, we shared a garlic naan, chips and pilau rice.

The meal was lovely and very reasonably priced even with two drinks.

The service was very good and waiters were very pleasant. There was a good atmosphere in the restaurant and I can't wait to go back again soon. Try it, you will want to go back.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Paul Woollatt -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Ref:- Saturday Evening 6th March 2010.

In response to the recent review by Sandra Heigold.

My wife and I were dining with a couple of friends at Marco @ Milano, which we had booked a while in advance and were really looking forward to the evening, as this is always a special place for us.

Our friends had never been before and came on our high recommendation.

Our night was unfortunately disrupted by two couples on another table who were being loud, arrogant and obnoxious to say the least, with regards an issue with one of their starters, but proceeded to finish another two courses before refusing to pay for their meals.

Their comments and conduct were completely exaggerated and clearly caused upset to Marco's staff, especially his sister, who was the waitress serving both our table and the people's in question.

I know from experience of many memorable evenings at Marco @ Milano, Marco and his staff take immense pride in the high quality and attention to detail of the food and professional service.

The behaviour of these people was completely over the top and unwelcome in this high-quality establishment, they obviously need teaching a few lessons in manners and etiquette towards other diners.

The food and service at Marco @ Milano compares highly to any other top restaurant in the area and this night was no exception.

Peacock Inn (Owler Bar) - Claire Finneran -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Mother's Day - what a terrible experience. We booked a table for 10 guests at 16:00, it took nearly 25 minutes at least before we ordered drinks and that was when we had to get up and ask a waitress to take our order.

We ordered our food from the set Mother's Day menu, and were advised approximately 10 minutes after that there were no scallops, which were on the set menu. We were not offered an alternative starter from the normal menu, even though the other options were not to personal liking.

All starters arrived, albeit one that was incorrect and didn't arrive until everyone else had nearly finished their starters. The starters that we did receive were not to the specification in the menu, and certain ingredients were missing.

Once the main courses arrived, 90 minutes after being seated, they were freezing cold. The gravy had skinned over, the portions would not fill a child. And again ingredients were missing from menu, i.e. onion rings from the burger. One main course was wrong.

Once we spoke to the manager we were advised they had ran out of certain foods at 3PM, before we arrived, but we were never advised of this once seated. We were not happy to stay for the main course and left instantly. The manager did not even apologise and had a severe lack of customer service. He only offered to re-cook the meals again, and also refused to touch the food when we asked him to - to prove we were not overreacting.

This totally ruined x3 mothers' day around the table and we would not recommend anyone to visit this place unless it's for a drink. Only save your petrol money. Do not book here for a special occasion, you will be highly disappointed.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Robert -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I had duck in a red wine sauce with caramelised onions. For £14.95 I got four pathetic little slices of duck, five slices of carrot and two slices of courgette. No potatoes because the waitress only brought six portions of vegetables between ten people. On questioning why the lack of vegetables the waitress agreed to bring more, these were brought just after we had all finished eating.

Then on the sweet menu you notice that the sweets are £5.95, and cheese and biscuits are £6.50. So we decided that we had been well and truly fleeced with the main course, so the sweet could go and jump.

Then after being presented with the bill, I was horrified to see that I had been charged £3.55 for half a lager. Yes that 's right, £7.10 per pint.

So as you can see my review is that the service is first class, the food quality is excellent, but the value for money is a total rip-off. And I would say I was more satisfied with the local chippy than this way overpriced, over-hyped fleecing restaurant. People leave well alone, you have been warned.

Otto Damahi (owner) responded on 16th March 2010:
I co-own the Mediterranean restaurant and have done so for the last 11 years. If you look at other independent restaurants locally you will quickly become aware that £14.95 for a main course is not unusual. We do not open tins or packets to make our food, we actually prepare it all from scratch. Chains can put a meal on a plate for far less but you may well get something very similar from the local supermarket for even less.

Your comment about the lager is misleading. Lager is sold in bottles, as it is in many places locally for a similar price. If you want pub prices, please go to the pub.

I notice that you did not complain to the staff about your duck portion. It's a shame you prefer to post a negative review rather than giving a restaurant the opportunity to put something right at the time.

Sweets are homemade, not bought-in. This is something some people will pay for and others will not. There are plenty of places you can get bought-in desserts for £4, but the mark up is considerably more on £4 than it is for us.

Prices are displayed in all restaurants and you have the choice to pay less elsewhere. If you wanted a cheap night out perhaps the chippy would have been a better choice. We have many regular customers who think good-quality, homemade food is worth a bit extra.
