Angel Inn (Holmesfield) - Ellen Ketchion -

Rating:

Went here for Sunday lunch with my partner and three year old little boy.

Apparently this pub had been taken over by new owners in Sept 2009, it's the same people that own the Millstone in Hathersage, so I wasn't too worried by the previous reviews, as we know the Millstone is good.

We were seated in the conservatory area, which was very warm and nice.

Service was very friendly and very attentive.

My partner and I both had the pumpkin soup for starter and then I had mushroom risotto, which came with chunky chips and garden salad, while my partner and little boy both had the Sunday dinner with all the trimmings.

I thought the food was very good and very tasty. The only thing my other half grumbled about was the size of the meal - there was too much! (Never done that before.)

Pricing was simple 1, 2 or 3 courses, £9.95, £12.95 or £15.95.

I would definitely return here for another lunchtime meal.

Chez Lahlou (Walkley) - Cass Glaves -

Rating:

Disappointing is the main word for my experience in Chez Lahlou last night! I had wanted to go for ages and was really looking forward to it. It was like eating in my Granny's front room. Lots of trashy little ornaments that were just mismatched. The decor was so 1970s... dated.

The food was brilliant, very flavoursome. However, we ordered a house wine and it was Italian. I'm vegetarian and there was virtually nothing on the menu. I asked the waitress if they could do me a vegetarian meal and she replied that they did some lovely ravioli... in a French restaurant? I ended up having peppers and aubergines stuffed with mushrooms and rice. Nice, but the portions were enormous. Way too much. It could easily had fed six. So much waste in this day and age is simply distasteful.

Asked for tea after. They don't do it! So had coffee and mine had strange bits in it. Asked for a new one and the waitress simply threw the old stuff away, wiped the cup and refilled it. Awful.

And then my favourite experience, the toilet. Nasty. Down a fusty old corridor that smelled of stale socks. The toilet was filthy. The skirting boards were falling off, paper was peeling off and it was just manly!

All in all really, really poor. I wanted it to be so good. Disappointed and won't be going back. £18 was not worth it at all. Go somewhere else!

Almas Indian Brasserie (Dore) - Ellen -

Rating:

This was by far the best Indian meal I have ever had in a restaurant. The waiters were very polite and attentive. We were seated straight away and we didn't have to wait too long for our meal.

I am vegetarian and my meal looked and tasted fantastic. We were offered poppadoms and pickle tray when we were seated. Then for starter I had 'Trio of Onion Bhajis', which came with a little side salad that had some kind of coriander dressing that tasted divine.

For my main I had vegetable Rehzla (I think that's how you spell it), which was vegetables in a caramelized onion and green chilli sauce, pilau rice and a Saag Paneer side dish (Indian cheese and spinach cooked in spices) that was equally as delicious.

On arrival, it did look a bit pricey for an out of town restaurant, but for the standard of food I didn't think it was that bad. The total came to 40-something pounds, which for two, including drinks, I thought was very reasonable.

I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Flouch Inn (Hazlehead) - Beverley Fletcher -

Rating:

We have been eating here for over 6 years and never had a bad meal.

We try other Indian restaurants and always end up going back. We always go when its a special occasion so we are guaranteed a good meal.

Think the prices compare with all other Indian restaurants, so best to pay for the best. The pickles are the best around. Its a bit out of the way but worth the travel.

ASK Italian (City Centre) - Susan Sykes -

Rating:

We went to Ask to celebrate 2 birthdays. We had to wait to be seated even though we had booked and could see our table was empty.

Although the food was good when we got it we had to wait ages and then they forgot one of the main courses. The same happened with the desserts, we almost gave up on them.

Overall the food was good but the service was so slow we will not be going back.

Zizzi (City Centre) - Helen -

Rating:

I couldn't disagree more, when we visited Zizzi's, the service was impeccable. I had the lemon chicken dish and it was quite simply delicious. The lemon sorbet we had for dessert was absolutely the best I have ever tasted.

It's not a bog standard Italian restaurant, Zizzi's offers something different. If you want chequered tablecloths and wine in a basket you'll be disappointed, but if you want excellent Italian food that's a bit more imaginative then this is the place to go.

Zeugma (Heeley) - Mr Howe -

Rating:

Having been before I thought I would take my wife for an evening meal on our first wedding anniversary, just for an hour without the kids.

We sat in the alleyway which led to the toilets. This was awkward because when people needed the toilet we felt that we had to hutch up to let them past.

The food though was great, but the service wasn't. We didn't get our starter at all, the waiter said he would bring the food all together, but all we got was the main meal and that was it. We waited and waited, then in the end we paid and left.

The waiter got the order all wrong (I don't think he spoke much English) and never apologised or we would have stayed until it got sorted. Because we were on such a short time scale we had to go.

I must say these authentic establishments serve fantastic food but the service should be better.

Swan (Ridgeway) - Rob -

Rating:

Ignore Philip.

The Swan has amazing tasting food, along with great offers on 2-for-1 meals. The Swan is usually a very busy pub but surprisingly you can have a quiet meal along with quick service.

Definitely worth a visit!

P.S. their chicken tikka blows my mind!

Peacock Inn (Owler Bar) - Anne Taylor -

Rating:

We booked a table for 5 for my daughter's birthday at 3PM on a Sunday afternoon. When we arrived we were told that there was a 45-minute wait for the main course - not sure why as the restaurant was not overly busy. Although some of our party had a long journey to make and time was short, we decided to stick it out and fortunately our wait was not quite as long as this.

After about 15 minutes my husband went off to chase a waitress, as no one had taken a drinks order. He was told that someone would be sent over to us shortly, but no one arrived. Eventually we asked another waitress to take our order but when it came, my selection was not available, even though it was a simple fruit juice from the drinks menu.

Two of us had starters which were OK, although mine was only just warm. The dish that I ordered for main course - a risotto - was not available so instead I chose a vegetable lasagne. I only managed to eat half of what was a small portion, because it was totally dry with hard sheets of lasagne on the top, and the presentation was awful.

My mother requested roast beef form the Sunday roast menu, but there was none of that, either, so she settled for pork. We asked the waitress if it would come with gravy already on it and she said that it would, so we specifically asked for no gravy and she wrote this on her note pad.

The vegetables arrived in a cold side dish with a jug of gravy, which although unwanted, indicated that the meat would be gravy-free, as requested. Unfortunately, this was not the case - the meat was smothered in gravy and so we sent it back. By the time a replacement arrived the luke-warm vegetables were cold.

When we had finished, the waitress collected our plates and asked us if everything had been OK. I told her that I could not eat mine, as it was dried up, to which she commented "Sorry about that", but no further action was taken.

We then waited to place an order for deserts, but no one came. After another long wait we abandoned any hope of getting any puddings and decided to call it a day.

We left vowing not to return again.

Vito's (Walkley) - Diane Adams -

Rating:

We have been going to Vito's Italian Restaurant in Walkley for 20 years and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves fine dining and especially Italian food. The staff are very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable and are never pushy. The relaxed atmosphere is that of a traditional family-run Italian restaurant where the chef, Vito, takes pride in his work, and it shows!

Over the years we have seen many changes to the vast and varied menu on offer and unlike most long standing restaurants who stick with the same menu, Vito is always reinventing his. We can't wait to visit in a couple of weeks when his new menu is launched.

The food is always of very high standard and most importantly is AUTHENTIC Italian fayre. Every dish cooked to perfection, and the only place in Sheffield you'll get your steak exactly how you like it! Be sure to leave room for a dessert.

Vito knows his wine and has one of the finest wine lists you'll ever come across. From delicious and reasonably priced house wine, to something a bit more special at £320, you will not be disappointed. Our particular favourites are the Pinot Grigio Collio Marco Felluga at a reasonable £25.50 a bottle, and the Chianti Classico Peppoli Antinori at £24.50 a bottle.

Yes, there are lots of (cheaper) restaurants to choose from in Sheffield, but if you want top quality authentic Italian food and wine, there is only one place to head for and that's Vito's! You won't be disappointed.

Everest (Heeley) - Suzan and Sarah -

Rating:

I have been to Everest recently to celebrate my friend's birthday. We had called the management and booked a table for 12 people.

The food was really very nice and the service by the staff was really impressive. The price is also reasonable, so enjoy!

I would like to ask everyone try it once and you will love it. Music is really nice. The longer we stayed in the restaurant the more memorable it got. I will be back again, I promise.

Shapla (City Centre) - Kris -

Rating:

Well as always one more Bangladeshi restaurant claiming to be Indian. But still we dared trying and ended up in utter disappointment.

The food was dripping in oil, the tandoori was burnt and the mains were disgusting... all in all total waste. And worst is their service - absolutely arrogant and unfriendly.

Except for good decor this restaurant is definitely a big no-no.

Chutney (Gleadless) - Bruno Locatelli -

Rating:

I normally use Rubeez but thought I would try Chutney instead. I find them both equally as good as each other so I just have one the first week the other the second week. Get the best of both worlds!

East & West (Nether Edge) - Sarah Murphy -

Rating:

Fantastic food. Haven't tasted anything as authentically South Indian outside of London. Would highly recommend.

Lovely man who appeared to be doing both the cooking and serving.

Could do with being a bit bigger, as I think it's going to get really popular!

Chez Lahlou (Walkley) - Vivienne -

Rating:

This restaurant is anything but French. Chicken wings & crudites? Nice gesture, but not necessary.

Portions astronomical, but with a price to match. If one orders the mussels one does not require the loganberry, melon, tomatoes, and salad as well. Less is more! Reduce the amount of food, reduce the price. More goes in the bin than is eaten! Emphasis is on quantity rather than quality.

Not sure what is trying to be created here. It is a mish-mash of so many things.

Wine list average, decor dire, music excellent. The strangest restaurant I have ever visited.

Would I return? No, which is a shame, because I think it could have potential, but as it is, not my cup of tea. Too 'in your face', and no class. 3/10

Zizzi (City Centre) - Barnaby Knowles -

Rating:

I went to Zizzi on a Saturday evening for a birthday celebration in a party of 5. Having been told that they didn't accept bookings on Saturday nights, we turned up at 7:30PM hoping that they'd have a table free.

We were in luck, although the restaurant appeared full a party was leaving and we were told to take a seat on their sofas and that the table would be ready in 10 minutes.

At this point the norm would be to go to the bar and order drinks. However, when we tried to do this we were initially told that we could not order drinks if we did not have a table. After explaining that we were waiting for a table to be prepared the bar staff relented and the drinks were brought to our table shortly afterwards.

The menu was varied and interesting but didn't contain the dishes that you might expect to find at an Italian restaurant. For example, it only contained one steak and one chicken dish (plus the specials board).

The ambience was very pleasant, as the restaurant was busy and has an open kitchen that makes for a point of interest. Others in my party found the service a little slow, or rather waiting staff seemed a bit scarce, so ordering extra drinks and getting the bill took longer than we hoped.

The quality of the food was good, and my main complaint is the portion size. I chose "Pollo al Limone con Spinachi" from the specials menu and was disappointed to find that this consisted of only a chicken breast in a lemon dressing with a few spinach leaves and some pine nuts, garnished with iceberg lettuce. I guess that's what the menu describes but for £11.95 I was expecting something a little more imaginative! Oh, and the "hot pot of sliced potatoes oven-baked with red onion and sunblush tomatoes" was tiny and had a jagged broken handle.

The red wine that we ordered was lovely but a lot warmer than room temperature. We guessed that it had perhaps been stored cooler and then warmed up a little too much, immediately prior to being served.

Overall it was a pleasant experience and although the food was nice nobody felt that Zizzi offered value for money or an extra special experience to justify its prices.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Emma -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I just wanted to make it clear to everyone reading this that Marco @ Milano is indeed a lovely place to eat, despite one haughty reviewer's comments on this site. I read the comments of other diners on this website before I went, and I wholly agree with the positive reviews.

The service was excellent: my wine glass was refilled discreetly for me, food arrived promptly, and a chap who I took to be the owner even came out to check that we were enjoying ourselves. We were!

I would highly recommend the salmon and asparagus pasta for starter - just lovely. I had a gorgeous chocolate pudding for dessert. We all really enjoyed our food.

I tend not to notice the interior of most restaurants (I'm usually too focused on my plate!), but this place felt special. The entrance is very spacious and looks through to the terrace - a great welcome which made me feel like I was walking into a taverna abroad.

Highly recommended. Hope to go back for another special occasion.

Silversmiths (City Centre) - J Sherwin -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

It has been some time since I last visited Silversmiths but the food is every bit as good as on previous occasions

I had loin of venison as a main course, which was possibly the best I have ever had. It was so tender you could have fed it to a baby. My wife had the sea bass linguine - a first for her- but equally enjoyable.

The service and ambiance helped to make it a very special evening.

Lokanta (Broomhill) - Sinan Yilmaz -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

What a fantastic surprise finding Lokanta in Sheffield. I totally enjoyed every minute of the Lokanta experience. Great Turkish hospitality, fabulous presentation, combined with magnificently delicious Turkish food.

Growing up with the taste of Turkish food, I am very pleased to say that Lokanta is doing a great job with their representation of Turkish cuisine.

I wish them all the success and very happy to recommend Lokanta to everyone who would like to taste the real Turkish food.

Everest (Heeley) - Gemma Bedford -

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have been coming to Everest Restaurant for more than 4 years now and I have to say the food, the waiters and the service is brilliant.

I always recommend Everest Restaurant to family and friends when they feel like having an Indian. I've been to many Indian restaurants around Sheffield but Everest has done it for me.
