Wagamama (City Centre) - Jessica -

Rating:

Okay... so firstly don't go here!

I have nothing good to say about this place... the service was atrocious, with me and a friend standing waiting at the door to be seated for 10 minutes even though the restaurant was empty and the waitress was busy talking to the chef!

We finally got seated and then the menu was a bit of a shock with very little actual Japanese food on it. Although it is famed for oriental and healthy food that tastes 'amazing', it was so disappointing. It had a chicken noodle dish with tomatoes and chilli and it was so bland, you couldn't taste the chilli and it was clear that the chicken wasn't cooked fresh as it was dry and tasteless.

The noodles were overcooked and soft, and the price was outrageous for what we ordered. It was over 15 quid each for a glass of Coke and these awful noodle dishes. It's safe to say we didn't tip and we didn't return!

All Siam (Hunters Bar) - Jessica -

Rating:

I can't believe there are no reviews for this restaurant already!

It is safe to say that this is the best Thai restaurant I've ever visited... if slightly on the expensive side, but it is definitely worth every penny.

I am addicted to Thai food and when walking past All Siam I thought it looked lovely... and it looks just as lovely from the inside as it does from the outside. The decorations are wonderful, as are the staff, although they were a little taken aback that we hadn't reserved a table, as the restaurant is tiny, so it's best to book in advance if you definitely want a table guaranteed.

I had the pad Thai noodles, sweet and sour chicken and some tempura prawns and they were delicious. I could have eaten three times as much because it tasted so good.

The drinks are expensive in there, so it's probably a good idea not to drink too much wine or anything.

The portions are enough for one person but they aren't too large, so if you have a big appetite then it's best to order a little more for yourself

I have nothing bad to say about this place! You should definitely visit!

Las Iguanas (City Centre) - Jessica -

Rating:

I had heard many good things about this place from friends so I wanted to try it out. I went with my boyfriend on a Monday evening and the restaurant wasn't too busy, which meant we were seated immediately.

We both drank the 'infamous' caipirinhas (or however you spell them) which were lovely but I must warn you there is a lot of alcohol in them so if you are like me you will be drunk pretty quickly on these.

I ordered the duck enchiladas for starters and my partner ordered the calamari. It's safe to say we both thoroughly enjoyed these and then came the main course... I ordered a chimichanga but unfortunately they had run out, a disappointment until my chicken enchilada replacement came and was absolutely delicious! (My partner had the same).

The staff were friendly, a little unattentive as they were all young girls chatting most of the time, the atmosphere was warm and I can imagine on a busy night that it is much more lively and interesting to go for a meal there.

We really enjoyed it and would strongly recommend it to anyone!

Vito's (Walkley) - Stuart Cuthbertson -

Rating:

I took my girlfriend here for a special night out one Tuesday, based mainly on other reviews of the place from this website. I wasn't disappointed! The head waiter was welcoming, friendly yet professional, and knew when to appear and when to stay out the way. Service was fast - though the place was very empty - and the food superb.

We started with some olives whilst we chose from the extensive menu - even from just these we could tell the quality of food would be great, as the olives were rich and fleshy, and we'd been given a massive bowl of them!

I had calamari to start, which was just thinly battered so the taste of the (fresh) squid came through. My girlfriend had an omelette with red onion and asparagus, also delicious. For mains, I had "Tagliata con rucola", which I highly recommend, and she had a good venison steak in an interesting prune sauce (from the specials board). These generously-sized dishes came with potatoes and roasted vegetables, and we only just got through everything!

After a bit of a pause we tackled some Italian ice-cream from the dessert menu - whilst not as creamy as real gelato, the flavours were brilliant, even just the vanilla. I finished with an Italian liqueur that I let the head waiter recommend to me - they have an impressive selection to choose from, as well as other spirits including a 1940 Scotch whisky at £80/25ml!

We'd washed the meal down with a £20 bottle of real Italian white wine - this was still at the cheaper end of the wine list, but it was a good dry white that wasn't being oversold.

All in all, a very pleasant evening in all respects. The bill came to around £85 for the two of us, plus a well-deserved tip, so this is not at all a budget venue. Nonetheless it was money well spent and I will be going back for another special occasion some day!

Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Anne Rooke -

Rating:

We went here for a meal on the 13th January in the afternoon. My husband had a spicy meat pizza and I had the lasagne.

His pizza looked like it had come from the supermarket and had the cling film removed and bunged in the oven. It was smaller than expected, looked manufactured, and tasted that way!

My lasagne tasted OK but was terrifically hot and caramelised around the edges of the dish, as if it had been reheated in the microwave. There was no salad garnish or bread with it.

The staff were all sat at the bar area drinking coffee and only one waitress was serving. She seemed really unconcerned when I pointed out to her that I had just eaten a piece of paper that was stuck on the bottom of the dish!

Our meal cost in total £29.00 and was disgusting. We won't be going back.

Rating:

I have to strongly disagree with most of the other reviews here. For one thing, the food has to be served piping hot for health and safety reasons so if you don't like it hot then go get a tub of Ben & Jerry's.

When I went there I had an excellent time. The calzone I had was cooked perfectly and it was full of flavour. The chairs aren't the comfiest things ever, but they add to the charm of the place. The staff were really friendly and I was seated almost straight away.

My conclusion, a perfect family restaurant with nice staff, lovely decor, great food and fantastic atmosphere. I strongly recommend.

Mamma Mia Pepe (Hillsborough) - Stephen Poston -

Rating:

Do not be put off by the outside of the restaurant. It looks sad and tatty, but reserve your judgement until you have tasted the food.

The food is prepared and cooked to your liking, fresh on the premises and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. The food is what really sets this place apart. Wonderful smells emitting from the kitchen tantalises your taste buds before you even decide what to order. The food is absolutely first rate and I have never experienced a poor meal here.

Uncle Sam's (Sharrow) - Wendy Hocking -

Rating:

Our family have been ardent Uncle Sam's visitors for 15 years. We visited as a party of 12 on Sunday 16th January. The staff were helpful, and the restaurant was busy. However, the standard of the food was disappointing. Our party ordered a range of food, burgers, chilli, steak, burritos. Every one of our party agreed that the food was disappointing. Chips were piled high on plates, far too much for anyone. The food was not as hot as we would have liked, obviously stockpiled to allow us to be all served in one swoop.

The menu hasn't changed over the years. Perhaps it is time to look at what competitors are offering and adapting accordingly.

A very disappointing visit. We will look at comparing Uncle Sam's with its competitors in future and try elsewhere.

Marco's (Woodseats) - Ian Wood -

Rating:

After reading a previous review I had to give my own review in relation to this restaurant that I have been to many times.

The food has always been top notch, and the fresh vegetables and real chips are a treat that most restaurants do not serve. The price is very reasonable, much cheaper than most of the restaurants I have been to, and the food is real food, not your usual microwave rubbish.

The place is very clean and the staff are always very friendly and the atmosphere is very relaxing, it's like home from home.

I would recommend to anyone. All in all a good night out for half of the cost at most other restaurants.

Marco's (Woodseats) - Joan Slater -

Rating:

My partner and I visit this establishment frequently and have done so now for many years. Although the building is very old and the decor may be a little dated this adds to the warm and cosy atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble.

The menu selection is vast, with something to suit all tastes, and the prices are very reasonable for such good quality home-cooked fresh food. An added bonus is that you can take your own bottle, although this is strictly limited to wine only.

There are a good selection of vegetarian options, and if fish is your thing then there are a number of choices on the board (the sea bass is to die for). Be sure to save room for desert, as the Crunchie sundae is a must and the other choices are second-to-none.

I have recommended this restaurant to many family members and friends over the years, all of whom have returned and agree that this is a great place to eat.

One thing I must advise is that if you are going to dine at Marco's then book, to be on the safe side. It is only small and does get extremely busy at times.

Wortley Arms (Wortley) - Bev -

Rating:

Excellent food unfortunately let down by appalling service.

Took our children (12 & 15) who are used to fine dining. On arrival we directed them upstairs, knowing that there was a lounge up there, only to be stopped by the head waiter saying the bar's downstairs. As the lounge was busy with dinners hence nowhere to sit and the only other room was the tap room, we continued to the lounge.

At no point did anyone offer to take our coats (08/01/2011). A good thing for my daughter, as the restaurant was so cold she kept hers on throughout the meal.

Although butter was on the table we were never offered any bread. My starter included a sorbet, for which I had to ask for a spoon. Overall the food was great, especially the mains of cannon of lamb & the pork dish.

We waited an hour between mains & ordering dessert. This was pointed out at the time of ordering but, 25 minutes later we still had to ask where dessert was, it came and all the desserts were cold (not a problem) but why the wait??

There was a serious lack of lighting in the toilets, which staff did know about but did not apologise for and did not point out that there were alternative toilets downstairs.

While the serving staff were polite they were less than attentive. The head waiter has been there sometime but, has not improved his public relations in that it seems like everything is too much trouble for him. The fact that he tried to explain the delay due to the a la carte restaurant standard was insulting. His people skills need serious attention.

At the point of payment 2 desserts we removed from the bill and it was explained that staff problems were due to an accident en route. All too late I'm afraid.

Over our 3 years of going here the food has been so good we have overlooked the service issues but, as a result of our most recent visit, I don't think I'll be returning. Sadly!

Marco's (Woodseats) - Rob Wilkinson -

Rating:

Decor leaves a lot to be desired. Very run down, weird polystyrene suspended ceiling circa 1960/1970, very reminiscent of hospitals and some industrial spaces. In need of more than a lick of paint. This continues through the toilets, which I would guess were last tiled around 1970, and are in a dreadful state. The restaurant is clean, it leaves an awful lot to be desired.

Given the less than salubrious state of the restaurant and area in which it is sited one would expect that this may be a budget eaterie, but no, that's not the case.

2 adults, two kids, had a starter and a main each, came to £62 and change including one soft drink each.

We had:

Starters:

2 x meatballs
1 x prawn and avocado
1 x garlic bread

Mains

1 x lasagne
1 x pasta carbonara
1 x chicken with cream, sambuca, chill sauce
1 x pasta al fourno with seafood

Garlic bread did what it said on the tin.

The avocado was drowned by the sauce and this starter was massively overpriced at around a fiver for about 8 prawns and a quarter of an avocado.

The meatballs were OK, but nothing that you can't buy at a supermarket.

The sauce with the meatballs and prawns both tasted remarkably like they had been cooked in cream of tomato soup.

The mains were pretty dreadful apart from the chicken.

The seafood pasta was unpleasantly salty and didn't get finished as a result. The carbonara tasted of nothing other than cream, and again that weird tomato soup taste was prevalent in the lasagne, which itself was very mushy. I could have comfortably have fed that to a baby without liquidising it.

The whole meal really seemed to be less than freshly prepared. My money would be on a lot of processed sauces being used.

The one high spot was the chicken, which I would happily eat again, but priced at about £12 for one chicken breast and a small bowl of vegetables, it's unlikely I would repeat the chicken purely on fiscal grounds.

In general pasta was about £7-8 per head, and the same for a small pizza. Chicken was in the order of £12-14, steak was £14-20.

Massively overpriced for what it is, and not that nice, but it is edible I guess. Portion sizes were OK, waitresses quick and efficient enough though not particularly friendly. I wouldn't go again.

Your money would be better spent elsewhere.

Grayson's (Beauchief) - Dora Shinn -

Rating:

The food was good but a very disappointing evening.

At 8:30PM on a Friday night two of the main courses were 'off' the menu and a third dish was missing half of the listed ingredients.

When it came to cheese and biscuits there were NO biscuits available and the cheese came with a hunk of bread instead. Somebody could have been sent to the local supermarket surely for a few crackers of some sort!

We were not offered coffee, and the waitress and perhaps one of the chefs set about tidying up and at one point another of the kitchen personnel walked through the restaurant with a mop and bucket.

We were totally ignored apart from a few glances in our direction which made me feel we were supposed to leave. This was just after 10:30PM.

I emailed my concerns and did not receive even the courtesy of a reply. Says it all!

Cafe Ceres (Hunters Bar) - Ellen Ketchion -

Rating:

Took my little boy here for lunch today.

It has two small seating areas, one downstairs at the back and one upstairs at the front, I think it also has a seating area outside but didn't take much notice as it was raining.

It was quite busy but we managed to get a table upstairs. It had a nice relaxing atmosphere and the staff were very attentive and the service was quick.

I had cheese and herb Omelette and salad, which was very tasty and a Cafe Americano (coffee). My little boy had beans on toast and orange juice. I thought the beans on toast was a little highly priced at £2.50, for one slice of toast and a serving of beans, but I didn't mind, as I was taking him out for a treat.

They had a lot of lovely sounding things on their specials board, which unfortunately I only noticed after I'd ordered from the table menu.

I would definitely recommend this cafe and would very happily return for lunch or evening meal.

Parthenonas (Highfield) - Claire -

Rating:

We had meze, it was £15 each and perfect. The food was all lovely and thanks to the massive quantities, they boxed it up for us and we just had the leftovers as a full meal today.

Lovely food. Excellent value for money. Great service. Good atmosphere.

Best Greek in Sheffield without question.

Zeenat (Attercliffe) - Craig & Joanne Roberts -

Rating:

I ordered a takeaway from Zeenat and was so impressed. Best tasting curry I have ever eaten. Very quick delivery and everything was hot and fresh, with plenty to go around.

The people there are so polite, haven't seen manners like this for along time. Absolutely fantastic. A+

La Luna (Banner Cross) - Sharon Thompson -

Had work Xmas meal Saturday evening. The restaurant was heaving, so expected a long wait for food. This was not the case. Extremely organised and efficient, good atmosphere and the food was amazing. Every dish cooked to perfection - one of the nicest meals I have ever had!

Ashoka (Sharrow) - Steve Bott -

Rating:

First time to this restaurant, and the last time.

There was a party of six of us and we were squashed in a 'booth' with the three of us at the back only able to get out by squeezing out of a small gap at the end.

Poppadoms arrived and were burnt around the edges and smelt greasy. I ordered a Prawn Puri for starters, it was very different to any I'd had before, quite creamy but maybe that was the style the restaurant used. It didn't taste too bad, just too creamy.

One of the other guys complained about his Chicken Tikka starter, as it was a little burnt and there was hardly any chicken. A couple of the other starters looked a little too 'well done'.

A couple of us were driving so just had glasses of coke. They were almost filled to the rim with ice, so we asked for drinks without it but they tasted very weak.

Just before they were to serve the main course they told us they had no egg rice, so I chose mushroom rice - it came and was very stodgy. My Saag Gosht was OK, but some of the lamb tasted a little fatty. My Chapatis were almost like folded Naans - nothing like the light Chapatis I would have expected.

When the bill came there were some extras on there that that we queried - apparently if you order your chicken as Tikka they add extra cost to the bill!

The only really positive thing I could say was that the owner was very friendly.

ASK Italian (City Centre) - M Casson -

Rating:

I booked a table for 24, and on the day I checked that all was OK. Upon arrival only one waiter was serving, and a waitress sat and had a meal ignoring us.

It took twenty minutes to get a drink, the food arrived on cold plates, and some people had not had a starter when others were being asked what they wanted for desert... total chaos.

We finally gave up and left. I complained and was offered six free mains on my next visit. There will not be a next visit. I also wrote to head office and received no reply. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
