El Paso (City Centre) - Laura Fellows 24/3/2007
We were looking for a restaurant on the Internet, as we were coming to Sheffield for my friend's hen night. After reading several reviews on your website we decided to book our table at El Paso.

The food was wonderful and the service was with a smile. I have been to many restaurants and it is hard to find a good mix of both. Whenever we visit Sheffield we will be back there. Try the chimichanga.

Monk's Bridge Farm (Dinnington) - David & Jenny Page 24/3/2007
Four of us went for a meal. We ordered our food at 9:20PM, and last orders were at 9:30PM. The food was undercooked, cold and the worse pub food I have ever seen. The waitress came and asked if every thing was OK, I told her that the food been awful and she said OK, smiled and walked away.

Talk to anyone who has been here and they will tell you to stay away. This is the second time we have been here but never again. I wrote to the pub but had no response.

This pub was empty at 10PM on a Saturday night. Why? Try the Golden Ball at Whiston or The Hind and sample quality pub food.

Ivory (City Centre) - Tim Johnson 23/3/2007
I went to the Ivory last Saturday and didn't realise this gem was there. It's a great place, I took my other half for a spot of lunch and had quality bangers and mash, they were described as Hathersage bangers and they were good. Natalie (other half) had Moroccan spice meatballs in pasta, which were also great. We had a couple of drinks and were waited on hand and foot. The food was great and the service I couldn't fault.

Casanova Pizzeria Ristorante (Crookes) - Beverley 22/3/2007
We went to Casanova for a special anniversary meal, mid-week. I have been twice before and enjoyed it, but have to say it was outstandingly disappointing this time.

The minestrone soup was watery and fairly tasteless, and the pizza main course was burnt underneath, served with blackened bits of ham on one of its quarters. Not wanting to ruin the occasion, we didn't complain. The other main course meal of veal served with vegetables was absolutely fine. However, to our intense irritation the waiters insisted on trying to top up our wine glasses every time they passed our table (presumably to encourage us to buy another bottle), and we had to ask them to desist on three occasions. At this point, we gave up on the dessert menu and left.

Not a happy experience, and at around £50 for a mediocre/poor meal it's one we vowed not to repeat there.

Artisan (Crosspool) - Helen Roach 16/3/2007
My husband and I had eaten at Artisan before and had been delighted by both the food and attitude of the waiting staff.

However, our latest visit was our last. In brief:

1. A mixed fish and shellfish platter contained 1 prawn as the shellfish element (yes, you did read that correctly).

2. Our starter plates were removed as my husband was still putting a piece of bread in his mouth. I was also left with no plate for the bread, which accompanied my main course.

3. The crab risotto was so salty as to be inedible.

4. We were made to feel incredibly unwelcome and 'hurried along' by the waiting staff (presumably because they were working to a high number of covers).

5. We complained at the time but the waiting staff just shrugged their shoulders, without referring the matter on.

6. We made several phone calls to the restaurant the day after to complain. On every occasion we asked to speak to the owners, who were actually waiting on tables on the night of our meal. We were never contacted.

7. The meal was expensive, and what should have been a lovely experience (our wedding anniversary) has become a bitter memory.

We will never recommend this restaurant to anyone ever again and I hope that they actually listen to their feedback at some point, before they are left with only passing custom.

I would also recommend that the owners adhere to the same dress code as the rest of their waiting staff - it seems rather distasteful to be served by someone who (in my opinion) looks like they're dressed for a trip to Morrisons.

El Paso (City Centre) - Sarah Becket 7/3/2007
We went to El Paso recently for my friend's 21st birthday and were very impressed. The quality of the food and the service were both excellent. I have visited many Italian / Mexican restaurants in Sheffield but have to say that this one was one of my best experiences. There was a party room where we had a disco after the meal. We shared that with other customers and the staff joined in as well. We all enjoyed the night and will definitely be back. El Paso is definitely worth a try.

Cipolla (Broomhill) - Barbara Vesey 28/2/2007
Fantastic - great atmosphere, superb Italian / Continental food - I went with seven others and we were all really happy with our meals, which ranged from expertly cooked steaks to a delicious seafood pasta. The puddings were to die for. And not expensive at all (we had about 4 bottles of wine, main courses and puddings and it came to less than £20 per head). The decor and seating are really pleasant/comfortable, service quietly efficient. Highly recommended.

Nonna's Restaurant (Ecclesall) - Sarah Thomas 28/2/2007
Lovely little Italian restaurant with friendly waiters and great food. The staff were very helpful, giving suggestions on their best dishes and nicest wines. We visited on our first night in Sheffield and were made to feel very welcome indeed.

Caffe Uno (Hunters Bar) - Mike Shenton 12/2/2007
Incredible experience at this restaurant February 11th 2007.

I have been a regular customer at Cafe Uno restaurants and, in particular, at this restaurant on Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, which is within a mile of my home.

That evening, with two of my three children away from home, we decided to eat out at this restaurant and booked a table for 5:30PM. We arrived on time and were seated reasonably quickly, ordered drinks and enjoyed the experience. The starter we shared, a basket of garlic pizza bread, was excellent.

My daughter ordered an Americana Pizza, I ordered a burger and my wife ordered the Merluzzo Con Risotto. Everything was fine except the risotto, which we pointed out to the waiter shortly after it was put on the table; the fish was good, but the rice was dry and was certainly not a risotto more like something out of a packet. The waiter asked if my wife would like something to replace it, but she said she would eat the fish but not the rice and the waiter said that he had noted our comment and would sort something out.

We called for the bill after the meal, presented our Cafe Uno loyalty card, and the waiter brought along a bill, which he said had discounted the whole of the food bill by 25% instead of the usual 15%. I said I was sorry, but I was not prepared to pay for the risotto, which would have been £11.95 - and frankly, I had expected that the item would not have appeared on the bill in any case.

The assistant manager, name of James, came along at this point to explain that he had reduced the bill and that we were better off doing this than trying to take the item off the bill. I said I was not prepared to pay for the risotto and asked him to take it off the bill at which point he came back with another bill, this time without the risotto and I gave him my debit card for payment. Whilst this was going through the machine, I noticed that he had now forgotten to discount the rest of my food for the discount card and asked him to do it again.

He came back to the table with a new bill, asked me if I had booked a table for this meal which I confirmed I had; he asked what name I had booked the table under and I said "Shenton, same as on the debit card". He then said, to my utter disbelief, "I suggest you don't come back to this restaurant". I then unfortunately, raised my voice a little as I was astounded that I could be treated with such disrespect. My wife recalled that this gentleman, James, served us the last time we were at the Cafe Uno and noted that he had a "bit of an attitude". I replied to James that I had no intention of coming back to his restaurant, but that this was due to my personal choice and nothing to do with his invitation. I then asked to speak with the restaurant manager, whom I was told is called Tim, but James said that he was too busy to speak with me. He did explain that it was Tim, the manager, who had cooked the risotto for my wife.

I have returned from the restaurant, still a little shocked from the experience, but determined to see this put right and have written to head office to explain to them in as full and honest terms as is possible.

We eat out frequently, at least twice a week, and often at restaurants on Ecclesall Road and the Cafe Uno has always been a favourite of ours and a good place in particular to bring our children. I am completely at a loss of words to understand what could bring a waiter around to treat a customer with such an attitude - this man James, when I said I would write to head office, said "you can write to who you like".

Be warned.

Dilshad Tandoori Restaurant (Woodseats) - Mark Richardson 11/2/2007
Due to the bad weather we couldn't get to our regular Indian restaurant so we tried Dilshad in Woodseats for the first time and were not disappointed. The decor was pleasant and the service was good. We shared a Tandoori platter to start, which was very nice (although the lamb was a little tough). My wife had a chicken Balti for main and I had a chicken Bhuna - both were excellent and very large portions. The rice and naan breads were also good. In our experience some Indian restaurants can be expensive but overall the meal was reasonably priced and good quality food. We would definitely go back.

Seasons Bistro (Sharrow) - John Dunkley 9/2/2007
On a snowy evening the cosy atmosphere was welcome. Our starters, goat's cheese and kedgeree were excellent. The mains of chicken and duck were also fine, and the crème brûlée and lemon tart could not be criticised. A Chilean Merlot was nice and fruity. Service was attentive and friendly, but not fussy. All in all a very enjoyable evening.

El Paso (City Centre) - Rebecca Davies 6/2/2007
We went to El Paso after being told about it by a friend who had read a review. I was looking for a place to party, as it was my hen night and can say that I was not disappointed at all.

The food and the service were brilliant and everyone enjoyed it. The party room meant that we could carry on upstairs and we danced away the rest of night. We will definitely be back.

Cafe Guru (City Centre) - Tim Hamer 1/2/2007
The first time we have visited this contemporary Indian restaurant and definitely the last.

Service was attentive at first then average as the evening progressed. Our starters of chicken spring rolls and shami kebab were tasteless, the spring rolls being very hard and almost impossible to cut without it flying comically off the plate, the shami kebab very dry, crumbly and with a useless garnish of continental leaf.

My main course of pistachio masala was again tasteless and unappetisingly orange in colour, my partner ' s main course was quite good with good spice flavours and fresh coriander. Our garlic naan bread was more like a very thin and crispy pizza base with garlic butter, not like the authentic naan we get from our local take away, the Tandoori Hut.

In short, if contemporary means no tandoor and garnishing dishes with swirly carrot and pointless leaves you can keep it, give me traditional anytime.

Thyme Cafe (Crookes) - Tim Hamer 1/2/2007
We have eaten at Thyme Cafe on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed... However, whether it was because it was a Monday and not a fresh fish day when we visited or just an off day, we can't say, either way, we were very disappointed.

Service as always was very relaxed and pleasant, the food however was very poor... not a great choice on the boards, including scampi and chips for £11!!! No fresh fish or mussels on the menu either. We opted for pate to share for our starter, the pate was tasteless and tomato chutney accompaniment lacking in depth of flavour and tasted like it was cooked for around half an hour at most.

Not feeling like eating rump steak, which was the only other thing that looked appealing, I opted for toad in the hole. When it arrived I was very sad to see a largish Yorkshire pudding with two sausages plonked inside albeit with a good onion gravy. The best part of my partner 's meal of duck was the braised red cabbage, the duck being tough and tasteless.

Worse was to come, desserts were ordered... 1 chocolate pot and 1 sticky toffee pudding. The chocolate pot instead of being dark, rich and with a hint of brandy was the tiniest amount of thick, gloopy milk chocolate sauce, for which we had to pay £5.50!

We don't complain much but made our feelings felt, paid the bill and left. We will certainly be voting with our feet in the future, which, I guess, will not be pointing this way again for some time.

Vito's Italian Restaurant (Walkley) - Alfred Geci 31/1/2007
We went for a meal at Vito's on a Saturday night for the third time. As you would expect in many places on a busy night, the food was not expected to be at the highest standards, but at Vito's we couldn't see any difference in the quality of the food, or the service.

The reason I go to Vito's is because I feel like I am actually in Italy. With the dishes Vito provides, you would only find them in Italy, no offence but I don't think you would find any Anglo-Italian dishes, only AUTHENTIC Italian food is available at Vito's. This is Vito's priority to the customers.

Another thing is if you really like rare Italian wines to wash down the beautiful truffle dishes I recommend that you go and visit Vito's. Then why not finish the night off with his good selection of Italian cheeses and perhaps a grappa would go down nice!!!

Ma Potters (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Laura Adams 22/1/2007
I went to Ma Potters with my boyfriend in an effort to combat those January blues - we wanted a reasonably priced meal that didn't stray too much from our healthy eating resolutions! Coal delivered exactly what we wanted - fruit juices, followed by a crisp Pinot Grigio with perfectly cooked steaks. The bill was very reasonable! The staff were friendly and helpful and the surroundings felt stylish and relaxing. Well done Ma Potterss!

East Ocean Cafe (City Centre) - Trudi Gehring 21/1/2007
I'm a regular here, I love that they serve a selection of Chinese Thai and Japanese cuisine including sushi and sashimi.

Last nigh a friend and I went and enjoyed a selection of sushi as a first course. The 'typhoon makimono' (a roll of minced raw salmon with chilli) was delightful and the nigiris of 'white fish', surf clam and crab caviar were also delicious. My friend was new to sushi and so we stayed away from the more adventurous options (such as my favourite salmon caviar) but the presentation and fresh, light food really won her over.

As a second course we shared a Thai curry. We would have both enjoyed more sushi but as the atmosphere was (and always is) arctic we needed something to warm us up. It was equally well prepared and delicious if not as spectacular as the sushi and we struggled to finish it all.

Two bottles of wine (well it was a Saturday night) and all the food came to just over £50 so I consider it good value for money too. I would wholeheartedly recommend East Ocean to anyone. Just take a couple of jumpers!

West 10 (Ranmoor) - Kate Laurance 14/1/2007
After several disappointing meals at Artisan I had began to lose faith in a good place to eat on the west side of Sheffield.

However, last night (Saturday 13th January), we went for a meal at West 10 following a tip off that "the food was good".

I have to say the whole experience was fantastic, we were made to feel really welcome in the small but cosy wine bar downstairs for a few pre-dinner drinks. The menu, although limited, was well balanced. I had the smoked salmon and beetroot starter and my fella had the oysters. Both were lovely and well presented and great tasting. For my main course I had the sea bass and my partner had the pork. They were scrumptious. The service was really well-balanced, relaxed yet attentive, the chef came out to chat at the end of the evening, it all felt really nice. We were too full for desert but enjoyed an after diner drink downstairs. I would really recommend this place, the food is great!

El Paso (City Centre) - Elle Spencer 5/1/2007
We went to El Paso after reading a review on this page. We went out on a works party for Christmas. It was very busy and we were sat in the function room upstairs. We all had a wonderful time and were amazed with the service and the quality of food produced. We continued in the disco afterwards and other parties joined in. We will definitely be going back again.

Tim Po (City Centre) - Jon Buck 31/12/2006
The staff at Tim Po are always friendly and ready to please, their range of dishes is amazing and the taste is as close to proper Chinese dishes as I have come across in the UK. I particularly recommend their vegetarian dishes (our favourite is the salt and pepper tofu - unlike any other tofu you will taste anywhere!) Like all the best restaurants their food is better than their decor, but don't let the paintwork put you off!
