Ivory (City Centre) - Karen and Richard James 13/6/2007
Had a fantastic evening out at Ivory, nothing was too much trouble, very relaxed, didn't rush between courses and the food was superb. It also had a live musician on, she too was great, a most enjoyable experience.

Old Vicarage Restaurant (Ridgeway) - Clive Norbury 8/6/2007
Dinner - 6/6/07 My initial reflections on the Old Vicarage Restaurant is that it really is a bit sad and tired and running on its previous reputation. Using young inexperienced staff is commendable, but only if you train them correctly to know what it is they are serving, how to serve wine and have their hair neat and tidy. The grounds, decor, furnishings, cutlery, crockery, linen are all way below par and the food, whilst interesting, not at all to the standard I would have expected for the money.

El Paso (City Centre) - Tracey Gardener 5/6/2007
My partner and I booked a table after not being able to get a table the week before. We were told about El Paso by a friend who had gone there after reading a review on your site.

The food was really tasty and well presented. The place was very busy and the upstairs room had a disco, on which the staff said we could join in with the other parties. It looked good fun but we said no as there was only two of us.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. I did book my birthday party there though so we shall be returning for the disco next time.

Dam House Bar and Restaurant (Crookesmoor) - Maxine Phillips 31/5/2007
Six of us including children went at 6PM midweek and took advantage of the very good value £15 per head for three courses, midweek offer. The welcome was warm and the food wonderful. I had ribeye steak and I can honestly say it was the best steak I've ever eaten.

I can't understand why people torture themselves eating at Artisan (had my worst eating out experience ever there) with this treasure on the doorstep. The puds were to die for too!

Ivory (City Centre) - Richard and Charlotte 22/5/2007
We found this restaurant from this website, whilst looking for a nice place for an anniversary meal.

The restaurant is intimate and attractive, the food was genuinely excellent; all sourced locally apparently and presented beautifully, with unusual combinations, and everything was really tasty!

Would recommend this place to anyone, as the prices suit students like us, yet the food is good enough for the likes of CEOs!

£15.50 midweek for a fantastic four course meal is a bargain!

Sanctuary (City Centre) - Charles Hoyland 18/5/2007
Decided to try this after it was reviewed in the Sheffield Telegraph, and was very glad we did.

The food was excellent; well presented and expertly cooked and the service was faultless. Even better was the price; A 3-course meal was £19.95 and if twp dine the price includes a bottle of wine (we had a superb Cabernet Shiraz).

The dining area is part of the Sanctuary bar and it was fairly quiet when we went at 7PM midweek, but as news spreads about how good this place is, I expect it to get very busy.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Danielle Coleman 13/5/2007
I've been to Marco at Milano a few times. Last night was extremely disappointing. Among the comments which came back when a remark was made about my main course being bland (and I was asked how it was) were:

"Four of us have tried the food, and it is not bland." Outnumbered and just a lowly customer I was still astounded that this counts as the kind of customer service you might expect there.

"I own 16 restaurants, I know food." And I have never put a fork to my mouth. Ever.

After this the service we got pretty much vanished altogether. So I asked for the £8 to be removed and we paid the remaining without a fuss. When I questioned why they and not I seemed annoyed, this was apparently due to my refusal to pay. (Though I'm sure there would have been sufficient mark up in the remaining 60 quid to cover my few mouthfuls, and might have saved them losing a customer!). Clearly if they go bust on the back of it I'll send a cheque.

Completely baffling. We didn't cause a scene, we still drank their wine, paid our bill, sat in their bar, and we don't think we're ogres who aren't familiar with dining out courtesy.

Not the place to go if you think you might have a contrary opinion about the food. Otherwise excellent! Enjoy!

Ivory (City Centre) - George Davis 5/5/2007
I must say I really enjoy good food that is not messed around with too much, and that is what we got at Ivory.

We arrived at 7:30PM and wanted a drink in the bar. We were told to go through when we were ready. We were then presented with a four-course set menu, which I was a bit surprised at, but it turned out that they had a new chef on and a new format etc...

I opted for a classic prawn cocktail, which was very well-presented and tasted excellent. I then had soup, which was again good followed by a Barnsley chop, which was a welcome surprise to get such a traditional dish well executed. The pudding was also excellent and I must say that I can't fault the value and the standard of the food and service.

Highly recommend it. George

El Paso (City Centre) - Tom Williamson 30/4/2007
Went to El Paso after reading the reviews on this site. The place is very small and cramped. We arrived at 9:30PM on a Friday night, so we weren't expecting an intimate meal. We were placed next to the door so we got a nice blast of cold air whenever it was opened. The night was made less pleasant by the large number of middle-aged women screaming at each other.

We should have been worried by the food when we read the style "Italian/Mexican", two styles that should have nothing to do with each other. Why not "French/Chinese" or "Japanese/Spanish"?

We ordered a salad and some nachos as a starter. The nachos were OK, nice and crisp with freshly made guacamole, salsa and soured cream, although there was far too much cheap cheese. The salad was very bland.

For main courses, we had a burrito and enchiladas. Both were coated in the aforementioned cheap cheese, and the sauce for the enchilada had a nice salt skin. The mince in both was of very low quality, and everything was far too greasy.

Service was fine, if a little slow at times. All staff were very courteous.

In summary, this would probably be a good place to go if were out in a large party group, as the room upstairs sounded like fun. However, the food is generally of low quality, with some redeeming features.

KumQuat Mae (Nether Edge) - Karl Ingrey 29/4/2007
My girlfriend booked us a table in this most amazing vegetarian restaurant in KumQuat Mae in Nether Edge, S7. The restaurant isn't much to look at from the outside, but the food makes up that. The starters cost £4.95 each and main course £12.50. It may sound a lot, but if you visit this restaurant you'll know it's worth every penny. The food is to die for.

My girlfriend had halloumi as a starter, which absolutely beautiful. For main course she had mushroom with blue cheese tart. For desert she had raspberry bread and butter pudding with Baileys custard. I had homemade houmous with bruschetta and salad with olives. Mouth watering. For main course I had braised fennel with various beans and lemon dumplings. Absolutely brilliant! And desert was dark chocolate cake was mouth watering.

For meat eater to enjoy a vegetarian meal as I did this restaurant is a must. All the dishes are vegetarian and some dishes are available in vegan.

The only downside is that the restaurant doesn't have a license to sell alcohol. But next door and down the road are off-licenses...

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Athia Begum 23/4/2007
I am a sucker when it comes to good food but above all you want to go somewhere that offers that and a little extra!

Not only does Everest do mouth watering food but the service, atmosphere of restrained elegance and the friendly staff make this restaurant one of my favourite places to visit when I come to Sheffield.

Everest was highly recommended to me by a work colleague who is a regular at this restaurant and I was told how it has a long-standing history of a good reputation and they were right as not only did I find the food delicious!! It was cooked to my perfection.

Also the menu isn't to daunting as they do a good job in describing the food too! They have a lot of variety and do good portions that are excellent value for money! What more can you ask for?!

I will defiantly be back. The overall service defiantly impressed me.

Rowsha (Walkley) - Dawn Bates 6/4/2007
The quality of the ingredients, level of service and of course Mohammed's knowledge of how to cook and present the food of Lebanon, leaves you wanting to try all the dishes on the menu! Being Lebanese you would expect a certain level of knowledge on how to cook the food, but Mohammed knows just how to make your mouth water.

The service is of equal standard, and the decor is very stylish. Rowsha is my favourite restaurant in Sheffield and the best Lebanese restaurant in the North of England.

Pizza Volante (City Centre) - Neil Gleadall 3/4/2007
I have been to the restaurant a few times and although the food has been nice the service received has been the worst that I have come across while eating out in Sheffield.

Our table was booked in advance was for 9PM, but upon arriving we did not get seated until 10:10PM, this being for a pre booked birthday party.

Finally after being seated 1 hour and 10 minutes late the staff service was poor to say the least and no apologies were ever made about the delay.

If you like nice food then maybe this if for you, if you like nice service stay well away!

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Arooj Begum 2/4/2007
Having read the review from a disappointed customer at Everest Restaurant I feel an obligation to write about my personal experience at Everest, being a contented customer.

I have been a customer at this restaurant for six years now, and I have had nothing but incredible service and great food. The staff has always been pleasant and friendly towards me and my family.

The restaurant provides implausible service not only to old customers but the new ones too.

Maybe that's why they did so well on the 'scoresonthedoors' being the first Indian restaurant to receive four stars. I have been to many restaurants around Sheffield but Everest is no doubt the best restaurant I have been too, and I am confident that there is many more satisfied customers just like me.

Cafe Guru (City Centre) - Claire 28/3/2007
This is definitely the best curry house in the city of Sheffield. I see myself as a bit of a curry connoisseur and not being originally from Sheffield - I've struggled to find somewhere that meets my high curry standards!

This place does the best tasting, most flavoursome curries around and the double-bonus is that the surroundings are modern, sleek and comfortable. The staff are friendly and the service is attentive but not too over the top.

I went recently and had a King Prawn Turka (delicious), pilau rice and I shared a garlic naan (amazing!) All highly recommended. If you want a decent curry (not a Vindaloo after 8 pints) then Cafe Guru is the place to go!

Yankee's (Ecclesall) - Sumeet Vohra 27/3/2007
I took my young son and one of his pals to Yankee's last week. Things looked promising initially. The atmosphere seemed relaxed, and the place cheerful enough. It soon turned out to the sort of unedifying experience that Sheffield restaurants specialise in.

A shared starter of nachos was fine. The kids wanted pizza with chips, and that's what they got. My ribeye steak ordered medium came positively well done.

It happens, so I didn't consider it a major issue. I did, however, think it a little odd considering that steak is a selling point on the menu, and the place was not busy.

I pointed it out to our waitress, and to be fair she took it away without fuss.

My replacement arrived after the kids had finished their food. A little irritating, as the idea was that we go out for a meal together, but it happens. My steak was cooked medium, and was as dull and tasteless a piece of protein as I have ever eaten.

The kids weren't keen on the children's dessert options, but fancied the chocolate fudge cake from the adult menu. I asked the waitress if they could share one, and she in replied that she would ask the chef. She returned with the news that the chef had refused to split the cake onto two plates. She stated that she would bring one portion, an extra plate and a knife and that I would need to divide the cake myself!

When she arrived with the much-anticipated gastronomic treat I asked "just out of interest" why the chef had not felt able to do this in the kitchen. She shrugged her shoulders and said that it would mean that he had to do it for everybody.

I let the matter drop, having established quite the level of sophistication that I was dealing with. Clearly the principals of customer service are thriving in this establishment. If a chef intends to treat his/her customers with arrogance and contempt, then the food had better be exceptionally good.

Yankee's has nothing to be arrogant about.

East Ocean Cafe (City Centre) - Sumeet Vohra 27/3/2007
Why do they serve hot food onto cold crockery at East Ocean Cafe? Sometimes I want to ask them, but I really don't want to upset the staff, who have never been anything less than totally charming when I have eaten here either with adult friends or my kids. Anyway it is only a minor quibble. The service can be a bit chaotic at times, but for me that only adds to the charm.

I love the East Ocean Cafe. I like the fact that it is brightly lit, clean, a little bit kitsch (the bridge connecting the 2 dining areas, and the little fishpond with its steam machine) and it has an open kitchen.

The staff are always courteous and attentive, and most importantly the food tastes fresh and zingy, not overly salty and cloying as can be the case in such restaurants. The presentation is also given great importance.

I don't think that I could reasonably single out any dishes for special praise, as I have had so many good meals there, but the salt and pepper king prawns (in the shell) really are fabulous!

For a relaxed and interesting meal that won't break the bank, you can't go far wrong with this place.

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Wendy Hicks 27/3/2007
My family and I have visited Everest Restaurant on numerous occasions and have always enjoyed our food and received good service. However, this occasion was entirely different and has left us feeling we will certainly take our custom elsewhere.

My family (my husband and three daughters) and I visited on Friday evening after having booked a table for 8PM - we were left to stand in the doorway for around 15 minutes without any acknowledgement that we were there. Eventually we were shown to our table and we ordered poppadums and drinks.

Our waiter then took our order for the main courses and left us to enjoy our starter and drinks. An hour went by but was no sign of our main courses. All the tables around us were being cleared and wiped down ready for the next customers. There was no acknowledgement or apology for the delay with our food - nothing - it was just as though we were being totally ignored.

Eventually, I asked the waiter if our food was on its way as we had been waiting now for a long time, without further ado, the manager behind the bar bellowed "cant you see we are very busy!" Well, that was it, not much of a way to keep your customers, is it?!

Feeling upset, my husband told the manager we were leaving and asked for the bill for our starters and drinks, we then left feeling utterly disgusted and disappointed with this level of service. Outside, the manager then followed us and continued to shout at us saying he would not have that attitude in his restaurant! We certainly did not like his attitude towards us and our family and feel I want to tell everyone about this bad service we received.

All I can say it is their loss not ours, we would rather take our money elsewhere - certainly not somewhere where the service was poor and they don't value your custom!! My advice is - don't bother with this place, if this is how they value regular customers they can keep it!

Wortley Arms (Wortley) - Sumeet Vohra 27/3/2007
I need to start by declaring what could be perceived as a conflict of interest. Andy Gabbitas (chef & co-proprietor) is a pal of mine.

I have had three meals at the Wortley Arms, one in Montagu's (the fine dining restaurant) and two in the pub and all have been superb.

I went to the pub for lunch last weekend with the kids, which is always a good test, and also gives me the opportunity to pinch some of their food. It was all impeccable, but worthy of particular mention was the osso bucco, made with thick slices of meltingly tender veal shin and with wonderfully unctuous bone marrow oozing out of the shin and into the sauce. Memories of that dish have caused me to salivate since.

Desserts were no let down, and I made sure that I had a taste of everyone's. My apple tarte tartin was crisp and surprisingly refreshing. Sticky toffee pudding was light and fluffy, and the accompanying dandelion and burdock custard was an unusual, but compulsive accompaniment. Chocolate marquise was a triumph.

As you will have gathered I was very impressed with the food.

The pub dining room is understated, tasteful and warm. The open fire adds a degree of cosiness that makes it very easy to spend time there.

What really made the experience superlative though was the staff.

On all the occasions that I have been to the Wortley Arms the staff have been efficient, professional, and charming without overdoing it.

I am so used to being served by inept, surly or charm less staff in South Yorkshire restaurants, that I am still slightly bewildered as to how the Wortley Arms can get it so right in that department.

I am sure that they are not infallible, and I have no doubt that mistakes happen (although I have no evidence), but their attitude is spot on.

My kids were made to feel totally welcome and were presented with games and sticker books soon after we had sat down. A nice touch, and not common in classy eateries in this part of the country.

This not just a positive review because Andy is a pal (and an excellent chef). I want him to do well, but I would not write an exaggeratedly positive review just to bring him custom and compromise my own credibility in the process. If the Wortley Arms was just ok or acceptable I would simply keep quiet. The fact is that on the evidence I have witnessed he is delivering he goods spectacularly well and I have found all my trips to the Wortley Arms to be immensely gratifying experiences.

Monk's Bridge Farm (Dinnington) - Brian & Marie 26/3/2007
We went to the Monk's Bridge Farm pub just after it opened. We found the food was excellent, portions were very generous and the prices extremely reasonable. It was recommended by a friend of ours who has been there several times and is also extremely satisfied with the atmosphere and facilities. We would recommend this pub to anyone and especially the carvery.
