I've been to a few Italian restaurants in my time and I've got to say this is one of the better ones. The food, service and wine are all brilliant and the prices are reasonable, too. I've found it better than one or two more expensive Italian restaurants further down Ecclesall Road. Definitely one to try!
El Paso (City Centre) - Amanda Rogers - 21st August 2007

I first visited El Paso with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I had never even noticed El Paso before although I go past it every day. We decided to go as friends had recommended it to us and there were plenty of good reviews on your website.
Great food and atmosphere. The staff were really friendly, and the food was wonderful and the portions were large and I would say value for money.
The whole visit was wonderful. There was a disco after the meal, which was really busy. Told my friend about it and she's booking her hen night there. Will definitely be back there again.
Nonna's Restaurant (Ecclesall) - Patricia Waistnidge - 20th August 2007
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Booked table for six for Sunday 19th August, looking forward to this very popular dining experience very well recommended.
A little disappointed at the menu, as on Sunday it is only the daily lunchtime one. This did not include any type of pizza or lasagne. The only meal for my non pasta-eating husband was sea bream, which was well presented with a few roast vegetables. The salad was delicious the olives were large and very tasty. My pasta was on special at £5.00 this was "fresh" pasta as opposed to the other kind I did not understand this explanation, I thought all pasta would be fresh at this restaurant.
We were assured that there was a children's menu, this was very disappointing with only four items to choose from. Once again no pizza. The children had a small portion of a main meal, which both thought not bad.
The desserts are expensive at £5.50 for typical Italian sweets, but once again not much choice. We had Toblerone Martini for our liquid dessert, which tasted more of Baileys than Toblerone.
Perhaps we chose the wrong night to visit Nonna's. We enjoyed the evening even though there was a very noisy crowd in the adjoining bar area.
The staff here are very good, with a young man on hand to fill up our wine glasses.
The evening was not cheap, but it was a nice experience and if we do go again, it will not be a Sunday.
Thyme Cafe (Broomhill) - Patricia Waistnidge - 17th August 2007
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
As a treat my son took my two grandchildren and my to Thyme Cafe for lunch. The board displayed lots of lovely dishes but not very much for the two children aged 8 and 10. They are familiar with eating out and have a good taste in food, but the dish that was most appealing to them was good old burger and chips.
The children don't eat much cheese but when the burgers arrived they were covered in cheese, although they were ordered as plain burgers. The burgers were taken away, 20 minutes later two more burgers were brought. These consisted of ciabatta bread bun and a ball of pink mincemeat in the middle. At this point our meal was ruined, the kids were just about in tears, and my son was angry as his treat had turned into a fiasco.
My lunch was a vegetable lasagne, which consisted of one piece of red pepper, one piece of green pepper, a piece of very tough aubergine, underneath one piece of lasagne and a very mediocre sauce.
I have emailed Thyme on several occasions and contacted Martin Dawes of the Star, Martin has replied but Thyme have just ignored this complaint.
I must add that my daughter and son-in-law went to Artisan another of the Thyme chain on the Friday before our lunch and had a wonderful meal.
I would just love someone from Thyme to get in touch and just explain away my complaint. Thanks for listening.

We went last Friday for the soul and jazz night. We arrived early so had cocktails in the bar, which was great as they were very well executed and the staff are very knowledgeable.
We stayed longer than we thought because of drinks and sat down and listened to Simon Peat the jazz artist. We ordered our food in the bar and were then showed through when it was nearly ready. I had the crab ravioli and my partner has the prawn cocktail. Both dishes were well presented and tasted great.
We then both had the steak and chips and again it was very good. I think sometimes when I read reviews it looks like someone from the place writes them but can honestly say that we could not fault the place.
We had strawberries and cream for dessert and then went back into the bar to listen to the funky soul music. I think this venue keeps improving, little things I notice and now with more upbeat live music its really is turning into a great place. 10/10 for quality, service, music, drinks.

My girlfriend and I had the most wonderful experience and had to write about it and recommend it to any other readers in Sheffield and surrounding areas.
We went on Saturday 4th of August 2007 and from start to finish our evening was perfect as was everyone else's around us. We arrived at 8PM where we were met and greeted and shown to our table for the evening. How many restaurants do that nowadays and let you have the table the evening?
They were playing live jazz on stage all night and everyone was really dressed up and made an effort we noticed, which made a huge difference. The atmosphere and venue are great and service is top rate, the staff were ever so helpful and you could see them enjoying themselves and smiling!
The food was slightly delayed to our table; around 20 min's from order for a starter but once it came but it was amazing and well worth the wait. We had a seafood Tagliatelle, and for our main course I had slow roasted crispy pork... to die for.
I seriously recommend it for a great night out rather than just eating out, its certainly a place to wine and dine, we will be back, especially on a Tuesday night now we know they play live jazz and it's only £5 for starters and desserts and £10 for mains! Cheap skates that we are!

I visited El Paso for a friend's birthday party and have to say that we had a great time and the food was excellent. The place was full. We shared the upstairs disco with another hen party. We will be going back again
Island Pot (Heeley) - Helen Martin - 2nd August 2007

I just happened to pop into Island Pot on the way to my friend's house, as I fancied something hot and spicy and it made a change from kebabs & pizzas.
This little takeaway was clean and friendly and the staff spot on. They had a wide variety of different dishes and I was spoiled for choice. I decided to try their jerk chicken and boy oh boy, it was mouth-watering.
My friends and I go there all the time now and have tried nearly everything on the menu. The food is always good and you get terrific value for your money, so anyone living in Sheffield who likes West Indian food I recommend you try this place out. You will be pleasantly surprised, I kid you not.
Rossi's (Sharrow) - Ken Donnington - 29th July 2007
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Genuine Italian restaurant - with space a bit limited, we were a bit crammed in a corner. Ordered Calamari Fritti for starters, which was beautiful. Tried a pizza for main course - it was not very big but tasty with a very nice base, maybe a bit on the oily side.
The best thing though was the Bolognese, simply gorgeous! This is proper stuff... probably the best pasta in Sheffield. You won't be disappointed. Slight negative point: a slight smell of burned cheese coming from the oven. Maybe you only notice it because nobody smokes anymore!
Platillos Bar & Restaurant (City Centre) - Stuart - 26th July 2007
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I visited Platillos Bar & Restaurant with my wife and a couple of friends on Sunday 22nd July. We had heard that there were some new restaurants opening at Leopold Square so decided to give this one a go. We were not disappointed.
The restaurant was not very busy, however, I anticipate it will be once people hear about it.
The staff were extremely friendly and courteous.
The food was excellent; there was a wide selection of tapas, we felt spoilt for choice. We ordered about 12-14 dishes between us and each one was very enjoyable.
The decor was nice and there is also a seating area outside.
On the day we visited, Platillos Bar & Restaurant had a problem with the fire alarm which kept going off briefly when they tried to put music on. This did not really bother us or spoil the meal but even so we were offered a round of free coffees for the inconvenience - a very nice touch!
We will definitely be heading back to Platillos Bar & Restaurant in the near future

The Blue Fin Seafood & Grill has just recently won restaurant of the year in the local upmarket glossy free ads magazine and always gets a good word so we gave it a go. What a mistake!
The venue itself resembles a hairdressers from the outside and does nothing really to dissuade the diner of this on the inside, with no ambience at all. The wine cooler, water glasses and glass table topper were all chipped and the glass table topper nicely trapped a pubic hair to the white tablecloth underneath.
The meal itself started well with the sun-dried tomato and Parmesan rolls being declared a triumph by all. That was unfortunately the zenith for the meal.
For starters I had blue swimming crab and avocado foam. The crab basically took the form of rillettes and was under seasoned and may as well have been tinned crab. The avocado foam was in reality pulped avocado. As a dish it was passable but would have been enhanced greatly by a couple of pieces of toast.
Of the other starters the monkfish was basically fish nuggets that had be deep fried and then refried to heat them for serving this resulted in them being over cooked. The Thai fish cakes suffered the same problem and that particular dish was far too large to be a starter, a claim that could not be applied to the other starters on the table. A further bowl of crab soup resembled Ox-tail but sadly tasted of neither crab, ox-tail nor anything else for that matter.
On to the main course, three of us opted for the Halibut fillet with clam and chorizo stew. This fish was cooked perfectly however the Clam Stew was terrible. Plenty of clams but the rest of it comprised half a tiny new potatoes and two pieces of processed wafer thin chorizo that looked like they had come out of a packet from Tesco. This was topped off by a plate covering puddle thin tomato liquid, which had briefly considered having some taste before quickly dismissing the idea and which amongst the three plates was luke warm, tepid and cold. Three others had cod on Bombay potatoes, this was declared to be OK but nothing more. Both these dishes were terribly thought-out especially as when we had enquired as to whether we needed any side orders of vegetables, had been told no they were 'complete dishes'. What utter twaddle a piece of fish on a few crushed spuds or in a puddle of cold red water is not a balanced plate of food in anybodies book.
To quickly rectify this we ordered a bowl of vegetables and wished we hadn't bothered. Whoever cooked them wants to be told that you stir halfway through the microwaving time to ensure consistent heating throughout. That way you don't get what we got a half luke warm half cold dish of vegetables. Indeed the carrots had the texture and temperature of fifty pence pieces taken straight from the fridge (and I'm all for not overcooking vegetables). The one saving grace was the fish and chips ordered by the 16 year old in our party. However if we had wanted fish and chips we would have gone to the chippy.
I cannot say too much about the deserts as we plumped for the safe bets of strawberries & cream and cheese and biscuits. Of the rest of the desert menu however it looked like it has been sponsored by Cow & Gate, lemon posset, rice pudding, creme brulee. Just how much baby food can you put on one menu. Again surely ill thought out and unbalanced.
After drinking a passable sauvignon all night we decided to finish with a bottle of red (again a passable Spanish). After hearing our complaints (I think they had caught a whiff of our discontent through the evening) we were given this on the house, which was welcomed, even though we had to pass out glasses up and down the table like we were at some WI cheese and wine.
The final nail was when after paying the £222 bill in cash and including a £13 tip (yes, despite everything) we were for some reason brought £7 change! This was scooped back up and we drew a veil over the evening, never to return.

Excellent cooking, well presented, however they told me how my steak was to be cooked rather than ask how I wanted it; then when another 6 people arrived the staff were unable to present our cheese and had the nerve to state that this was because the new customers were in need of service. There were only two tables in use... come on, great food spoiled by panic, and a degree of arrogance.
El Paso (City Centre) - Kathryn Norton - 21st July 2007
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
What an excellent restaurant. We have been as a couple and in a party, and each time the atmosphere was great and the staff were wonderful and friendly.
El Paso is a real gem of a restaurant. They do the best garlic bread cheese and chimichanga I've ever tasted. The upstairs disco was great after our meal and we danced away 'till late.
Balti King (Broomhill) - Katherine Mitchell - 18th July 2007
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
It way my birthday last week and wanted to try somewhere different so we opted for Balti King in Broomhill.
It was really busy when we got there and there were people waiting for tables, upstairs was busy too. Anyway after only a few minutes we were shown to our table. Our waiter immediately asked us for our drinks order and handed us the menu to look over. On bringing our drinks we were also given poppadoms and pickle tray to munch away on whilst deciding what to have.
The menu is huge, I have never seen so many dishes, and to be honest I think that the menu is a little overwhelming and unnecessary too many options. Anyway I decided to have a prawn puree to start and chicken Korma as a main (I'm a real coward when it comes to Indian food).
The food was served quickly although some tables of large groups we could hear had been waiting for a long time. The prawn puree was delicious, full of large tasty prawns and the sauce was the best I have ever tasted, it was lovely. My chicken Korma was also very tasty although a little watery for my taste but still delicious.
The downside was that the place was really too busy and the waiters seemed to not know what the other was doing, hence some larger groups walking out after waiting too long for food. All in all we all had a good night and it made for a lovely birthday, the food was nice and reasonably priced (got some money off vouchers delivered to work to make it even cheaper...bonus!!) and the staff were friendly even though they were run off their feet. I would recommend it and will definitely try there again
Arena Square (Attercliffe) - Alan Cottam - 15th July 2007

This was our second visit and second complaint about this restaurant. The decor is very good, the food tastes good but value for money it is very poor. Nothing has altered from our first visit and complaint over the size of the portions that you get. Three new potatoes cut in half and half a dozen carrots and beans for £8. I still do not think is value for money. Starters were adequate. Not tried the deserts.
Shapla Tandoori Restaurant (City Centre) - John Craven - 8th July 2007
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
NOT RECOMMENDED. I visited Shapla with my girlfriend a couple of weeks back. The restaurant seemed quite nice from the outside, however, neither the food nor the service were up to scratch. The tables were too closely packed and we felt like sardines with the diners next to us being able to hear every word of our private conversation!
I always go for the Tandoori in Indian restaurants, as I find it is a good way of checking to see if they have the basics right. Well, the chicken was overcooked and very chewy and the marinade was very salty. When I complained, I got a very annoying waiter who seemed to only repeat the words 'authentic recipe'!
We were not happy with the rest of our meal and would definitely not go to Shapla again. Hope that is useful for all.
El Paso (City Centre) - Linda Plunkett - 1st July 2007

We will definitely be back to El Paso! We booked a party of 20 and arrived at the restaurant and were greeted by very friendly staff who showed us our table.
The food was excellent and well presented and served in a timely manner considering the restaurant was full.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We finished off in the upstairs disco. I would definitely be back here again in the near future!

Boho is an incredible restaurant with dedicated team members and a variety of foods and cocktails that are a pleasure to try. The bar staff are friendly and are quick at their job and everything is done professionally. The Mojito was amazing.
The waiters were friendly - always coming around checking up on how my meal was going but not over the top in a way to suggest that I was not welcome.
Upon arrival at the table I was brought bread with a plate of butter and lemon and balsamic vinaigrette oil, which added to the extremely tasty bread, of which there was always a variety - from tomato bread to lavender and it was all made in-house that very afternoon. I was brought a taster of what was to come which was tomato water served with mixed herb foam in a shot glass, which was really tasty and got me excited about what was to come.
I had ordered chicken, Parma ham and truffle oil terrine, which was served with torumponts and oatmeal toast, which went down amazingly. For a main course I had pan-fried duck served with Savoy cabbage and juniper berry juice, which was delicious and was cooked through perfectly.
For desert I had a bread and butter pudding, which was served with a caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream and was delicious. They also had a selection of profiteroles to be served with my coffee but I was far too full to eat any more.
Boho is without doubt one of Sheffield's finest restaurants and if you have not yet been to experience the delights within then I strongly suggest that you do because it will be an experience you will not forget.
Boho is a real treat.

My girlfriend booked a table for a Saturday night meal on the strength of the reviews she saw online. Neither of us had ever been to Sheffield before so didn't know what to expect but what we found will live fondly for a long time in the memory.
The food was excellent, served in the small but cosy dining room which adjoins the livelier cocktail bar area. The service was friendly and cannot be faulted and the prices were very reasonable considering the high quality of the food.
We were going to move on elsewhere for some drinks but instead decided to stay put in the bar area to sample the cocktails on offer. I have to say the bar-men were very professional, serving excellent well made cocktails and actually seemed to take pride in their work, which is not the way it always seems in other places. (Plus being a dweller of the south of England I found the prices very agreeable.)
All in all, we had a great night and in turn, a great weekend. We will definitely return to the Ivory in the future and I can certainly recommend it to anyone without hesitation.

Had a fantastic evening out at Ivory, nothing was too much trouble, very relaxed, didn't rush between courses and the food was superb. It also had a live musician on, she too was great, a most enjoyable experience.
