Felicini (Hunters Bar) - Robert Savage - 12th July 2008

Visited on 9th July 2008 and found the food good but somewhat expensive.
Interesting modern surroundings and busy which I never find a good excuse for slow service!
Ordered a steak and was charged £3 extra for the chips although some items came with the chips i.e. moules.
However, the crunch came when the bill included 55p for the mustard! Half a spoon maybe. Chips were poor, mainly skins not much potato. I spent over £50 so did not leave a tip because of slow service and I thought the charge for the chips and mustard more than compensated.
Long time before I visit again.
El Paso (City Centre) - Sarah Broomfield - 4th July 2008

What a great find!
My boyfriend and I were really looking forward to going to this place, as when we'd passed by it previously, it looked like a fun place with good food.
The starter nachos was a good way to kick-off, and I'd suggest that one portion is definitely enough for two. The main course was highly exceptional, a real treat. The chicken fajitas were the best I've ever tasted. The tender chicken was accompanied by fantastic sizzling onions and peppers and delicious guacamole, salsa, chopped vegetables and bean sauce. My advice is to include a little bit of everything in your fajita bread. My partner chose chimichanga and we both remarked at the excellent quality. The quantity is ideal.
I recommend you go in starving and you'll stand a good chance of finishing!
There was a disco on upstairs but as there were only two of us so we gave it a miss.
Robin Hood (Millhouses) - Gill Williams - 4th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Although I wasn't expecting excellence at this pub / restaurant I certainly didn't expect the quality to be as poor as it was. The food was awful, I ordered the ciabatta with cheese garlic bread - it arrived black, the waiter who bought it over could visibly see it was totally black and burnt, but still served it.
I had the steak, which was average but the chips where cold and soggy. My husband's cottage pie was awful, like a puree baby food and the potato was obviously powdered. It left us feeling very nauseas and we didn't stay for desert!
Acorn Inn (Chapeltown) - Tony Plant - 30th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
The Acorn Inn is part of Greene King chain and uses their main menu, but is one of the best I have visited.
There is normal pub environment and a large conservatory, which is very nice on a summer evening.
The menu is varied with a wide choice at very good prices and there is also a specials menu.
The quantity and quality of the food was very good and the service quick and efficient by the speedy staff. Five adults dined out and had two courses each including drinks for £58. Excellent value and I will be calling again.
Walnut Club (Hathersage) - A Moran - 29th June 2008

Booked at the Walnut Club for a meal for a party of 7 for our golden wedding anniversary expecting it to be a lovely experience. The service and food were very disappointing. We complained but the manager was very defensive. We will never go back.
Cricket Inn (Totley) - Tony Plant - 17th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Read good reviews but a very disappointing experience.
Pub split in two parts, one part with large central table and smaller perimeter table - great if you like noisy, badly behaved kids as part of your dining experience. The other side full of cramped tables and fast paced waiters.
Sheffield fish cake starter served on a big square plate, which is fine if the tables are sized to accommodate them. For a lesson in fish cakes try my local chippy, it's not hard to deep fry 2 potato slices in batter with a fish filling and get the fish moist but cooked and the potato fluffy and cooked.
Steak and kidney pie served on a chopping board with a pot of mushy peas and 3 very crispy roast potatoes. Steak was a fatty, kidney absent and crust overdone. Gravy very nice.
Towards the end of the meal the pub and adjacent tables were overrun with guys who had been out running on the moor. I don't like sharing elbow personal space with loud, sweaty types in tracksuits and shorts.
If you like the idea of average pub grub at premium prices in a room full of ill behaved brats and noisy sweaty "athletes" then this is the place for you.

I went to Azzurri this weekend to celebrate a family birthday and would never go again.
The waiter came to our table to bring our bottles of wine that we had ordered and dropped one on my mum's head! My mum then became unwell and had to rush off to be sick.
Following this I went to the loo and due to a faulty lock on the door I got stuck in there. Fortunately my sister-in-law was there so she could alert someone. When I was let out there was no apology but the waitress seemed to find it funny.
The service was poor with the main meal taking 45 minutes to come out. It seemed like we were an inconvenience to one of the waiters who huffed and puffed all night.
I had the seafood risotto, which was extremely overcooked, however other people in our party said their various meals were 'nice' or 'fine'.
When we came to pay the bill (we spent over £200) we asked for a reduction due to my mum's injury. We had to ask for this several times as they (very reluctantly) only wanted to knock off £10 which was not good enough.
All in all, bad service and less than average food.
El Paso (City Centre) - Melanie Burns - 15th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I went to El Paso for the first time for my 30th birthday after being told about it by my workmates and had a great night out.
The food and service was great and the food tasted beautiful. We really enjoyed our meal and then we went upstairs into the function room for the disco.
The music was a mix of Spanish/English and everyone enjoyed it. All my friends were amazed with the level of service provided and all said they will be going back.
La Romantica (Heeley) - Sarah Knowles - 13th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I have been here on numerous occasions with different people and I love it!
It's great value, the portions are generous and the food is well cooked.
The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
Don't come here if you're looking for fine wines and pan-fried scallops, but if you want a good honest meal for not much money this is the place!
Ayesha's Authentic Restaurant (Ecclesall) - Gez - 31st May 2008

Well what a shame! This great restaurant has partly changed hands and has recently been re-decorated. Formerly it had superb customer service and the food was always fantastic. Service was a little slow but it was always well worth the wait.
Since the change over, things have really deteriorated. The menu is more run-of-the-mill, the decor, though smart is now coarse and a mish-mash of themes, but it's the service!
Oh my God, having been asked about the alterations and said I didn't like them, I was then harangued on the steps by the new owner about my comments. He has no wish to listen to the customers' views and was frankly rude.
You now go there at your peril!
Platillos Bar & Restaurant (City Centre) - Tamlin McPherson - 29th May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I would like for you to understand a first experience at your bar, and the consequence your staff has had upon it.
To give you some perspective, it is said that for every good review, a person will tell four people. For every bad there will be thirty they will tell, I'm sorry to say, you picked the wrong person to give a bad impression to.
We turned up, admittedly, deliberately, unannounced at your bar, upon questioning the bar staff they didn't know how to handle wine, to which Brett (one of your staff) advised me that the white was refrigerated (too cold) and the red had been left on the bar side for about a week (and as such submitted to varying temperatures night after night, ruining any quality in the wine), we were told later (by someone else) it was left there only a day - consistency please?
Further to this, we we're told we were being served this in "Spanish" wine glasses, please, if there were such a thing, a simple search would find them. I use ISO wine glasses for tasting, as I am part of a few wine clubs, and do not believe there to be "Spanish" glasses.
So lets talk about the food, which came quickly originally, and as far as vegetarian food was concerned was OK, but charging £8 for a small (and it was) cold meat salad? Do you regard this to be value for your food?
Then later when my friends arrive you tell me that we can no longer order food downstairs because of how busy you are in the restaurant upstairs and we can't be seated upstairs at all tonight, even though I spoke to your people at 08:45 this morning (Wednesday 29th May 2008) and he advised I wouldn't need to book. This is some kind of joke surely?
The worst thing of all of this, is that upon leaving disappointed, I tried to provide feedback to your bar staff member "Brett", I advised him it was the first time myself and my friends had attended and our experience had been a poor one, given the reasons cited above, his response was that he threw his hands in the air and said "I've only two hands mate", it didn't occur to him to raise this complaint to someone capable of registering it, with a view to improving service in future? My god, are we still living in that backward a culture?
I will rate this very poorly, overpriced, badly kept wine (for a wine bar) and unable to cater for people when they come.
2 / 10
Wortley Arms (Wortley) - Jackie Wilkinson - 25th May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Went for a pub lunch at the Wortley Arms recently and two of the things we wanted weren't available that day. We finished up having less than average gammon steaks, which were very overpriced, especially as we were in the pub and not the restaurant.
The waitress was very pleasant and that was the only thing about the experience that was. Definitely won't be eating there again.
Vito's Italian Restaurant (Walkley) - Tamlin McPherson - 23rd May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Once more we stepped in to the welcoming surroundings of Vito's to be greeted by Alfredo, the head waiter, who offered us a seat in the foyer while he took our drinks order at the bar and we sat relaxing while we considered our options for food.
As vegetarians we had a great selection to choose from. There is, as always, an exceptional variety of truly traditional vegetarian food, as well as a great variety of meat dishes for you carnivores out there.
For those of you who pay any attention, you may have noticed that my wife and I have reviewed several Italian restaurants, including La Scala in Millhouses, and Nonna's, both good, but simply don't match up to the brilliance of Vito's and his wine collection.
What does it for me is a combination of things. The food is always exceptional; the service from Alfredo et al is by far and away the best in Sheffield, not pushy, but attentive, and knowledgeable - so few places have staff that know about their food and wine!
But let me tell you about the wine - which rivals the Old Vicarage for quality, and betters it in Italian style by a long way! I get wine from a wine broker - I collect and taste vintage wines, and let me tell you, I don't know where he is getting his selections from, but his fine wine list is without compare in Sheffield, and quite possibly in the north of England. To add to this, Vito has assured me he is expanding his selection soon to include some truly glorious northern Italian dessert wines, which are hard to find and really worth seeking out to taste (try them with the home made tiramisu or zabaglione (zabaione), you'll know exactly what I mean!).
If you do nothing else this year, make time to go to Vito's, one of the last truly Italian restaurants in Sheffield.

We took two friends here for a special night out. The food was really great, the service very good, and all the staff were extremely attentive and friendly.
I don't know when the previous reviewer visited the restaurant, but our experience was completely different to theirs. In fact, the staff were so friendly and accommodating, they gave us a lift to and from the restaurant!
We were staying in a hotel in Bamford and couldn't get a taxi at all for some reason. We rang the restaurant and spoke to a chap called Jake, who, on hearing of our dilemma, said we weren't to worry, he'd send someone to pick us up, we were to enjoy the evening, and when we were ready to go, he'd get someone to drive us back. On top of excellent food, we got this kind of service! Please don't take too much notice of the other review - you'll have a great time at the Walnut Club.

Lovely Italian restaurant with great food. The Staff cannot do enough to make your night out.
We went for a birthday meal and were given a complimentary bottle of wine and the birthday girl, my mum, was given a rose and lots of attention.
We brought in a birthday cake and the waiters all came to sing 'Happy Birthday' and it made the birthday meal really special.
Canton Orchard (Ranmoor) - Steve - 11th May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
The restaurant is set in lovely, well-maintained grounds and the building has a pleasant character. But that's about the best of it. Hardly a relaxing enjoyable experience...we felt rushed by the arrogant manager who took our order. Service was sadly lacking on all fronts.
Food arrived sporadically. My son's spare ribs were like balls of rubber. They replaced them with slightly better bones. The main courses were very good. But again, a couple of dishes were late to the table.
The draught beer isn't kept well so we had draught lager and then resorted to bottled Tiger. The wine was quite good.
We couldn't decipher the bill, £104, so the manager brought us a pen, paper and calculator but the point is we couldn't read it... but hardly value for money.
We mentioned our dissatisfaction about the service/starter to the manager who went back to the kitchen to chastise the staff, and later returned with a bottle of wine and apologies and thanks for our observations... but we won't be going back.

I have been here twice. On both occasions the food was great and the staff were extremely friendly. My favourite dish was a creamy chilli chicken pasta.
It wasn't very busy when I went but the weather was terrible and they had not been open long. I will certainly be paying them another visit, possibly to sample their early bird menu.
Taste (Hunters Bar) - Barry Dobson - 20th April 2008

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
This place is next door to Woodie's sandwich shop at Hunter's Bar, Ecclesall Road, which is a firm favourite in our family for Saturday morning with a newspaper...
In the daytime Taste serves coffee, tea and cakes etc, and it is a bring-your-own-wine bistro / restaurant on an evening.
We went for the Italian Tapas night, which seems to run once a month. The staff here got it exactly right; formal so you know you're a customer, whilst approachable and friendly.
Our waitress recommended 5 tapas dishes between two of us to have enough variety and still leave room for pud. They arrived together, piping hot, and each with a very distinctive flavour. Our favourites were the Roman roast belly pork, which was rolled around a robust fennel seed stuffing, and the tomato & bean stew recommended by the waitress, but all of the dishes were distinct and individual.
I haven't had Italian food like this before and will be back for more.
Puddings were equally good and the coffee was Italian and strong.
The bill was less than £40 for the two of us!
Highly recommended - next time I go I'll know take an Italian red with me.
Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Tim Taylor - 17th April 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Having recently eaten here for the first time in a few years I feel compelled to write and urge anyone who considers this the premier fish restaurant in Sheffield to try the Blue Fin on Hunters Bar roundabout.
I suppose the styles are different and the Med is probably true to its name in terms of the rustic food whereas Blue Fin is much more modern and the cooking more precise but in my opinion rustic food and Michelin star prices do not mix and that, for sure, is what is on offer at the Mediterranean.
I was quite surprised by how busy it was midweek, so busy that by 8:30PM almost half of the impressive list of available fish had been rubbed off the board (or not - we were told when we tried to order Turbot that that too was no longer available but that they hadn't had time to rub it off the board. Lucky them!)
Maybe herein lies the problem - there were too many examples of carelessness and/or cynicism for these prices in my opinion (tired and not very fresh vegetables accompanying the mains being the most noticeable though the tatty plastic wrap-around so-called wine cooler ran it a close second) and we were left with the distinct impression of a place coasting and trading on reputation which, on this evidence, it no longer merits.
Starters and mains for 2 with a couple of drinks from the bar each and one bottle of wine came in at a cool hundred quid including tip. I'm afraid that it didn't represent value for money for me and next time I'm in the mood for seafood, I'll be going back to the Blue Fin.
Pizza Volante (City Centre) - Dom - 11th April 2008

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I've never been to this restaurant before so I thought we might as well try it seen as it's been there for years. Next to our table were two Italian women, and I felt that just because they were Italian they were getting a prompt service better than us.
The menu was like any ordinary Italian restaurant, the same menu wherever you go. There was nothing different on it. When I go to Italian restaurants I want to try something different that I can't do at home.
The starter was OK; you can't really go wrong with deep fried squid. However, they were clearly bought in frozen! My girlfriend had mushrooms cooked in a tomato sauce, which tasted old and watery.
For main my girlfriend had the tagliatelle with salmon and cream, which was better than mine. The menu said tagliatelle with asparagus and porcini mushrooms, but where were the porcini mushrooms? All I got were again the same watery mushrooms that my girlfriend had for starter but mine were sliced. There was no flavour at all.
As for desert my girlfriend wanted the amoretti desert with mascarpone cream, when she tried ordering it the waiter didn't inform us that they hadn't any in, so she settled for a slice of cheesecake. As for me I was looking forward to the chocolate pancake, however when it arrived the pancake was hard like rock, I need more than a knife to cut through that.
I was very disappointed with the meal, and the service wasn't all that either. For £43 I'd rather go and spend my money somewhere that all customers are treated the same and the menu is more accurate. If you want something different and enjoyable then go to Vito's in Walkley where the food is definitely fantastic and different not like the other restaurants that have the same menu wherever you go.
