We were a party of 9 visiting Sheffield from Hull for my daughter's graduation ceremony. We arranged for a meal to round off the celebrations. We were all extremely impressed with the decor and on arriving, my mother, who we had just managed to get to walk down a long street, was rather the worse for wear and asked if she could use the lift. They gladly cleared the lift of some chairs being stored and left them out so that she had no difficulty if she wanted to use the lift again. In the restaurant we were served by a lovely young lady called Rachel, who was very attentive (although being a Monday night there were only two parties in). The menu was very homely with starters such as black pudding with a poached egg on top and main courses such as steaks and my favourite lamb shank on a bed of mashed potato with a lovely rosemary jus (or gravy to the less educated amongst us). My brother-in-law kindly bought two bottles of champagne for us to celebrate Becky's achievements, which went down very well. Only my son had room for a pudding so we just ordered a sticky toffee pudding (he polished off the lot) and a cheese board for us all to have a little nibble at. Rachel brought a pile of side plates to allow it to be shared as we saw fit. The whole bill (excluding champagne) came to slightly over £200 for nine of us - all having at least two courses and drinks - fantastic value in comfortable surroundings. Pity we can't pick this restaurant up and drop it in Hull city centre - we would be regulars! Strada (City Centre) - Peter 20/11/2007
Newly opened in Leopold Square, the food portions were very generous and the service was outstanding. We felt that we received good value for money, and all in all we will definitely be going back again.
El Paso (City Centre) - Laura Stephenson 20/11/2007
I visited El Paso this week and was very impressed with the place. The food is outstanding. I had a chimichanga, which was delicious, and my girlfriend, a vegetarian, thoroughly enjoyed her enchiladas. The service is good and the staff are very friendly. It is a thoroughly enjoyable place to visit. We joined in with the rest of the parties to share the disco after the meal and stayed there instead of going to a bar. Highly recommended. Shapla Tandoori Restaurant (City Centre) - Mike Egerton 18/11/2007
Initially we enjoyed our meal at this restaurant and there was nothing wrong with the food or the service. However, because the restaurant was busy and there were people waiting to be seated they tried to hurry us out. They asked us if we needed a taxi when we had not even finished our meal! And when we ordered coffees they said they had "run out of coffee"! We had been there for only 45 minutes and not taken too long over our meal. We felt that this was rude. Taste (Hunters Bar) - Katie Driver 7/11/2007
Have eaten here on at least 6 occasions now and intend to keep going back! Service is friendly, accommodating, efficient, and always with a smile. Food is fresh and delicious. My boyfriend thinks the Italian breakfast is fantastic and the Italian sausage unbeatable! I am working my way through the extensive sandwich and Panini menu and am yet to be disappointed. Would thoroughly recommend the bacon, goat's cheese and roast mushroom toasted Panini. Home made Italian cakes also wonderful - try the muffins! Will be continuing to return! La Scala (Millhouses) - David & Amy 6/11/2007
We have been going to this restaurant approximately every month for the last four years and in all that time have never had a bad meal. Amy is a "fish-etarian" so usually the choice of food for her is limited. Even though it is predominantly meat dishes, there are still a good amount of main courses and many starters to choose from for her. Our love for food and wine is about the only thing we have in common with each other so throughout the four years we have made it our "hobby" to go to many different restaurants and pretend we are restaurant critics. Sad eh? :) We take into consideration all the different factors that make a good dining experience. A) Food quality B) Service C) Ambiance D) Wine E) Cost After eating at the vast majority of all the restaurants in Sheffield we come back here time and time again, on the above points. A) Food quality, very good, can sometimes vary slightly but overall consistently well above average. Our top dishes are the mushrooms in cream sauce for starters, steak and risotto balls for main. We have no complaints with the entire menu though. B) Excellent, the owner shows an interest in the guests and the waiters/waitresses seem very professional, unlike some of the expensive restaurants on Ecclesall Road which employ students. C) Very nice, not at all pretentious but still maintaining an element of class. Decor is of a theatre setting and has an olde-worlde Italian feel, perfect for groups and romantic meals for two. D) A large choice of wine but as we are not quite as fussy about wine we always go for the house red which is £10 for a 1 litre bottle. Spot on. E) Taking all the above into consideration we feel the price reflects very good value, even with three starters, a steak main and a litre bottle of wine the bill rarely exceeds £50. We will continue to visit this hidden gem of a restaurant forever. El Paso (City Centre) - Sally Cunningham 30/10/2007
Each time I visit El Paso it gets better. The food and the service are excellent and it has a brilliant atmosphere. We had the disco room after the meal, which was free. Had a great night.
Taste (Hunters Bar) - Chrissie Lee 25/10/2007
I recently visited Taste after hearing it had been taken over as an Italian. Everything was excellent - the food was brilliant value for money, the service was good - staff were friendly, helpful and smiley. The food was really, really tasty. Can't wait to go back! San Lorenzo (Sharrow) - Mark 18/10/2007
I have dined at San Lorenzo on numerous occasions over the last few years and the food is always excellent. I have ordered both pasta and pizza dishes and they have always arrived quickly. The décor has had a fresh lick of paint recently and it is thoroughly modern inside. The staff are friendly and welcoming and service is both prompt and reliable. I highly recommend it for a relatively cheap, satisfying night out Piccolos (City Centre) - John Mortimer 17/10/2007
I have been to Piccolos many times and must say it is one of the best. But, a word of warning: the last time there, when asked what I would like to drink, I did not look at the wine list and ordered a house wine rosé. When we received the bill we were charged £16.50, which I think is a bit over the top for house wine.
23 Bar and Restaurant (City Centre) - Beverley Glynn 8/10/2007
We had a lovely meal at 23 Bar and Restaurant, it was a busy Friday night and there were 26 of us. The food was delicious and well presented. The menu catered for all tastes and the two and three course set meals were extremely good value. Service was prompt and attentive, despite the large number at our table. The atmosphere was buzzing with music from the bar downstairs and I would not hesitate in highly recommending it as a venue for a good night out! Will definitely be returning soon. Ivory (City Centre) - Joseph Brammer 4/10/2007
We went last night to the Ivory and it's all changed! They are more of a bar these days with blackboards on the wall, anyway we went into the new lounge bar and it does look good, down lit with black boards on the wall for the menus. I choose the ham hock, while my friend Susie had steak and chips. The food was spot on and the portions are good. I would highly recommend Ivory and the new format looks a winner. El Paso (City Centre) - Christina Proctor 2/10/2007
Found this restaurant from your website, so a big thank you first. Booked my birthday party for 20 of us there and have to say that we all had an absolutely brilliant time. The food and service was fantastic. My friend who was with me has booked her birthday party there as well. Highly recommended. Maranello's Italian Restaurant (Ecclesall) - Sam Jay 30/9/2007
My boyfriend booked a table at his restaurant on Ecclesall Road, you must not! It was freezing and empty, the food was terrible and almost inedible. I can say it was the worst swordfish and pigeon I have ever tasted. My other half left most of his, too. As for desserts just the same, terrible. The best and only good thing about the night was the wine, but at £33 for 2 bottles I would hope so. I didn't complain to the staff or my boyfriend as it cost him nearly £100 and I didn't want to upset him. But, boyfriends out there, please take your lovely ladies somewhere else. Vito's Italian Restaurant (Walkley) - Sam Jay 30/9/2007
OK, I know I am going to get slated for this review, as the entire population of Sheffield have nothing but good things to say about this restaurant. We eat out at least three times a week, thus my expanding waistline! We have tried many different types of places to eat, so although I am no Raymond Blanc I am not a total novice. Anyway I have been to Vito's four times over the last 2-3 years, mainly for other people's special occasions. I am not over fussy and will only complain if there is a genuine need to. However, I have yet to have a good meal at Vito's (yes start throwing the tomatoes). I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about perhaps there is some kind of brainwashing once you get through the door and I am the only one immune to it. I just find the food very, very average and overpriced. I also find it amusing as to how people act once they are in this place, like they are worshipping the owner and his restaurant, very bizarre and a little disturbing I have to say. So although I am totally on my own in this opinion of Vito's I felt as though I just had to say very average food, overpriced and nothing special at all (I am now on my way out of the country to avoid the mob I know is on its way). Piccolino (City Centre) - Andrew Ferguson 27/9/2007
Just felt I had to put up a review, having just had tea for the first time in the Sheffield branch of Piccolino, it was great! I very nearly didn't go, as when I last went to the Didsbury branch I ended walking out after 20 minutes of no attention. I have to say that they didn't have this problem tonight. Great service, had a couple of the "tapas" dishes, a couple of the starters and a pizza to share. Perfect, just the right amount of food, good attentive service, very nice atmosphere. All in all a great meal. The only thing that let the place down sadly were the desserts, which would have been so much better if they were fresh. Both of the desserts, including the "special" were clearly bought in. After such great food it was a little bit of a let down! However, more importantly I had a welcome meal in a warm restaurant with staff the smile! Will be back soon. Taste (Hunters Bar) - M Hopkinson 25/9/2007
Called in at Taste on the 'off-chance', and were certainly not disappointed. Called in on a Sunday lunch time and enjoyed a lovely lasagne, vegetarian dish of the day, followed by great coffee and gorgeous cakes. Staff were very attentive and pleasant, made me and my family very welcome. Vijay's Indian Restaurant (City Centre) - Simon Platts 23/9/2007
We had some curry vouchers from a product promotion at work. When we looked at participating restaurants we noticed Vijay's so decided to book there. At the time of booking we mentioned the vouchers and they said fine. When we turned up on Friday night the atmosphere from the staff was poor, and the restaurant was empty at 10PM on a Friday night. When we ordered we mentioned the voucher, which basically allowed a main course for free with any two purchased under £10. It was like we asked for gold. The staff were not happy and replied "the owner doesn't like these voucher things and is cutting them out". We ate the food, which was actually reasonable, paid our £80 for three of us (including £10 off one curry) and left. I won't recommend this restaurant to anybody and with it being empty I'm not surprised! My anniversary is next week and Vijay's will not be returned to!
Having eaten at Artisan a few times, we were really excited about trying the fish restaurant upstairs. The last time we went to Artisan, the manager downstairs took us upstairs for a good look around. We wanted to take out my husband's parents, as there was a retirement to celebrate! Having had this arranged for 3 months, we were all so excited. My son wanted to come too, who is nearly ten. So I booked and said I wanted a 7:30PM-8PM booking. The person booking this said they had a big party in that night, and that we could go 8:30PM. So we arrived, just after 8PM. There wasn't a bar to have a drink, but the waitress told us, not to worry as the people before us were just finishing their meal, and we would be able to sit down. Good start, or so we thought! We sat down and bread instantly arrived, then we looked around and a couple walked in and sat down opposite. We then had to wait about 35 minutes before anyone took our order for food. By this time the couple opposite were on main course! She said well you know you did come in earlier than you booked your table? We ordered nibbles and a main course. The nibbles arrived about an hour later! Great, then we ate our main course at 10PM, maybe a little later. We left just after 10.30PM, nobody was happy. Hardly anyone in the group, being 5 of us, fancied eating by the time the food had arrived, it was just a complete waste of money. It cost £140.00 and I feel it wasn't worth a penny. I love food, love eating out, and have never complained once about a restaurant, but this was taking the mickey. They said they had a big group in, there were 7 of them. In total there were only 25 people in the whole restaurant. I think if they cannot co-ordinate a restaurant of 25 people, then they shouldn't be in business. Put it this way, I would have got served better at Hell's Kitchen on the first night, and that's being polite. Please don't go there, it isn't worth the hassle. Ivory (City Centre) - J Clough 20/9/2007
Whilst the food was quite edible and the surroundings very pleasant I wouldn't say that I would go out of my way to recommend this restaurant. The staff were very good - however the waitress could not tell us why the set meal price was dearer than the separate a la carte prices and said that we were not the only people to comment on this: quite bizarre pricing!
