Noodle Inn (Highfield) - Fred and Janet Dixon - 15th January 2008

This is a wonderful place to enjoy Chinese food. The roast duck is to die for, as are the prawns, chicken etc...

The staff are so friendly and make you very welcome. The restaurant is very busy but well worth the wait. We eat out regularly and feel that this is now the best Chinese food in Sheffield.

You can also take your own wine and ice cream desert is free. To be honest we would go whatever the price for the fabulous food and wonderful staff make a great night out. But sometimes we cannot believe how little the bill is.

P.S. Ladies check out the fantastic new toilet.

I visit this restaurant regularly and it never fails to impress. The service and setting is excellent, the menu choice is massive with lots of vegetarian options and it is reasonably priced.

It is advisable to book at weekends though as its popularity seems to have caught on!

We've eaten here a few times now and although the food is generally quite good, the service and atmosphere can only be described as atrocious. On our most recent visit, we had booked a 3-course Sunday lunch, which the website told us was accompanied by piano music. Instead we were treated to a performance on the stage of about 10 to 15 rowdy children running up and down, shouting and climbing on furniture. In the absence of any music, the noise drowned our conversation.

The service throughout was polite but minimal to the extreme. We had finished our wine during the 40-minute wait between the starter and main course and had given up trying to alert the absent staff to order more drinks.

The dessert arrived, complete with a 6-inch long black hair baked into my pastry. There was none of the usual "is everything ok with your meals" so I went up to the bar to raise my complaints to the man who seemed to be in charge. He offered to refund the price of my dessert - how generous!

The main door was propped open during our dessert, seemingly to hurry us up. After waiting for some time to have the bill taken from the table, I gave up waiting and went to the bar to pay. We were then left waiting around in the freezing restaurant for a further 5 minutes wondering where our coats were so I took it upon myself to go and look for our coats myself, which I soon found in a room at the back.

We visit many restaurants on a regular basis and I can honestly say I have never experienced service and atmosphere as bad as this place. I was embarrassed to have taken our friends there that afternoon. I was so annoyed with our experience, I wrote to the manager but received no reply. That just about sums this place up. Michelin star? More like Greenshield stamp!

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Khan Raja - 2nd January 2008

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have been to Everest recently to celebrate my friend's birthday. We had called the management and booked a table for 6 people

The food was really very delicious and the service by the staff was really impressive. The price is also reasonable, so enjoy!

I would like to ask everyone try it once and you will love it.

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Madhavi - 24th December 2007

I have been to Everest recently to celebrate my friend's birthday. We had called the management and booked a table for 10 people and requested them to make a special arrangement like decorating with balloons, ribbons etc... I was not sure that they will do all these, but when we entered into the restaurant it was really amazing, and we felt really happy with their service it was completely decorated, even more than what we have asked them.

And well coming to food it was really very delicious food and the service by the staff was really impressed.

Finally we had a great time in Everest Restaurant.

UK Mama African Restaurant (Broomhill) - Alex Davis - 19th December 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

The restaurant had a pleasant ambience, despite us being the only 2 people in there. The service at the start was excellent, however the experience in this restaurant soon deteriorated. Initially the drinks were brought to the table in small cartons that we had to pour for ourselves and the starters took 20 minutes to be served (this only consisted of a few vegetables and we were the only 2 people in the restaurant). When the starter arrived the sauce and vegetables were very nice and wetted the appetite for the main courses.

Unfortunately this was false hope. When the mains arrived, they were hot and reasonably well presented, however the quality of the food was extremely poor and was very tasteless. My partner had the jerk chicken, which was over-cooked and tasted of gravy (probably Bisto out of a packet). The other main was a lamb stew. The lamb tasted okay but within the lamb dish itself were sharp fragments of bone mixed in with a side order of gristle. In reporting this to the waiter he said that this is how we serve the dish. He then said we could leave without paying. His attitude was offensive and didn't provide us with an alternative solution.

We decided to leave and vowed never to return to such a poorly run restaurant and low quality food. In visiting many restaurants around the world (including kebab houses) this has to be the worst experience by far and a place to miss.

Butlers Balti House (City Centre) - Priya - 19th December 2007

A good restaurant with delicious food, friendly service & a relaxing atmosphere. Try Aloo sagg in vegetables, it is very delicious and was one of the suggestions from the staff. The price is also reasonable, so enjoy!

Rossi's (Sharrow) - Kate Love - 14th December 2007

Every time I fancy an Italian meal I always find myself here because I know I will get a decent meal. The bruschetta is the best I've had and I've had the pizzas and a few pasta dishes and have never had a bad meal yet.

The only thing that lets it down are the desserts. They seem to sell out really quickly and some of them taste like cheap frozen ones from the supermarket. Luckily I'm usually too full from the starter/main to mind too much.

Its usually quite busy so the tables seem to be getting more and more squashed together but the quality of food has never let me down. The waiters are polite but aren't the over friendly, pestering type, which is fine by me. The door man is a good touch too although I do feel sorry for him.

Nirmals Restaurant (City Centre) - Zena - 13th December 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We decided to visit the famous Nirmals Restaurant after hearing such good reviews. However, my experience was not so pleasant and ruined what was a great evening.

To start, we were seated to a dirty table, then given a filthy look when requested to have our table cleaned and set up. 40 minutes later the table was never set despite asking the waiter to do so several times. I would understand if the restaurant was busy, but it wasn't. The waiter was ignorant and rude! Never again!

Piccolino (City Centre) - Jane - 13th December 2007

Really enjoyed my meal, the food was delightful, the made-in-house desserts were a beautiful ending to an enjoyable meal.

The male waiter who served us was attentive, friendly and dare I say very handsome. Despite being pricey it was well worth it. I shall be visiting again soon.

Do not allow them to seat you to the left of the reception desk on the two 'afterthought' tables in front of the screens. I ended up with an icy blast onto my back every time the entrance door was opened and this spoilt my evening. The manager's answer to my complaint was preposterous and I quote "if you had come on a different night sir you may have got a different table."

It took three attempts to get a wine that they had in stock, then they brought the wrong wine to the table initially. The food was good, but the service was unacceptable. We had to ask where our dessert course was after a wait of 20 minutes after ordering.

So overall, not the dining experience that Michelin advocate. They were obviously not sat at the same tables that we ended up at when they did their review.

Ashoka (Ecclesall) - Phil Barber - 8th December 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We recently booked a table for 8 people for my birthday. The reservation was made 3 weeks prior, so plenty of notice was given. The table was booked for 9PM but on arrival we were told it wasn't ready, so we waited 20 minutes.

Once seated we found the waiter to be very rude and unwelcoming. After ordering drinks we were told to calm down. Hence, we were only talking between ourselves. After being spoken to so rudely we quickly vacated the restaurant.

Cannot comment on the standard of food only the hospitality, which left a lot to be desired! So if you like eating in silence this may be the place for you.

Nirmals Restaurant (City Centre) - Ashley Lester - 28th November 2007

I keep going back to Nirmals Restaurant because I do believe it to be the best Indian cuisine that Sheffield has to offer. A family run business headed by Nirmal Gupta, who was a consultant for Sheffield University, has a good menu and serves spirits wine and Indian beers - a small bar but a wide selection of drinks, even if they are very pricey.

Your first visit will either be pleasant or downright bizarre - mine falls in to the latter category. I arrived just after closing on a Tuesday and not only did she welcome me in for a takeaway but she drove me back to my house! Something like this you just don't get in Sheffield or indeed anywhere else these days. Back a week later with a friend for a proper meal, on entering we were shown to our table and given menus, along with poppadoms and pickles (their mango chutney is divine - no other place I have been to comes close, and I have tried a half dozen Indian restaurants in Sheffield and plenty more in Manchester and Birmingham).

Nirmal comes over in her full ample regalia and recommends dishes, not something to everyone's taste but we put our trust in her and I would advise you to do the same. Service was quick, although she occasionally does have a memory lapse and forgets the odd naan which is no big deal as she barks her orders in the kitchen and keeps the chefs on their toes, which is nevertheless entertaining.

I usually have the madras, or the jalfrezi, with the occasional starter, half portion of saag paneer or Bombay aloo, and Kingfisher, sometimes a desert like her fresh mangoes from Bombay or kulfi, home made gold-leaved ice cream. If you're extra special as a customer she will give you a nice piece of her Indian sweet almond and aniseed pastry cake which is divine - I forget the name of it at this precise moment... It may be elitist but trust me, once you have the custom of this woman she will be like your second mother.

You can spend however much you want to, I have had meals for under £15 per person and I've splashed out and not got change from £30, it's rather up to you. But it can be a little pricey, as reviews have pointed out. I suppose you get what you pay for though. Just don't be tempted to give in to Nirmal's requests for you to try her so-and-so because it drains the wallet! All in all a fabulous place. Little touches like for example the timing of the naan to arrive about 90 seconds after the food is perfect - keeping it fresh and letting you spoon out the food before the naan reaches the table - now that's service.

All said and done it really is a haven for Sheffield's curry scene.

Nirmals Restaurant (City Centre) - Prashant - 24th November 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Nirmals restaurant touts itself as a very different restaurant, and it is different. As per the guide book you do have the ample hostess greeting you on entry.

The restaurant has a very homely feel to it (managed by the whole family). It has an old style decor and is really cramped for leg space.

The food is good (though no different from the endless array of other Indian restaurants in the UK). But the service was very slow.

Also beware of the prices on the menu card. The menu card is outdated and what you are charged for is much more than what is stated on the menu.

All in all an average decent restaurant but not one that I would frequent more than once.

23 Bar and Restaurant (City Centre) - Julie Leach - 23rd November 2007

We were a party of 9 visiting Sheffield from Hull for my daughter's graduation ceremony. We arranged for a meal to round off the celebrations.

We were all extremely impressed with the decor and on arriving, my mother, who we had just managed to get to walk down a long street, was rather the worse for wear and asked if she could use the lift. They gladly cleared the lift of some chairs being stored and left them out so that she had no difficulty if she wanted to use the lift again.

In the restaurant we were served by a lovely young lady called Rachel, who was very attentive (although being a Monday night there were only two parties in). The menu was very homely with starters such as black pudding with a poached egg on top and main courses such as steaks and my favourite lamb shank on a bed of mashed potato with a lovely rosemary jus (or gravy to the less educated amongst us).

My brother-in-law kindly bought two bottles of champagne for us to celebrate Becky's achievements, which went down very well. Only my son had room for a pudding so we just ordered a sticky toffee pudding (he polished off the lot) and a cheese board for us all to have a little nibble at. Rachel brought a pile of side plates to allow it to be shared as we saw fit.

The whole bill (excluding champagne) came to slightly over £200 for nine of us - all having at least two courses and drinks - fantastic value in comfortable surroundings.

Pity we can't pick this restaurant up and drop it in Hull city centre - we would be regulars!

Newly opened in Leopold Square, the food portions were very generous and the service was outstanding. We felt that we received good value for money, and all in all we will definitely be going back again.

El Paso (City Centre) - Laura Stephenson - 20th November 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I visited El Paso this week and was very impressed with the place.

The food is outstanding. I had a chimichanga, which was delicious, and my girlfriend, a vegetarian, thoroughly enjoyed her enchiladas.

The service is good and the staff are very friendly. It is a thoroughly enjoyable place to visit.

We joined in with the rest of the parties to share the disco after the meal and stayed there instead of going to a bar. Highly recommended.

Shapla Tandoori Restaurant (City Centre) - Mike Egerton - 18th November 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Initially we enjoyed our meal at this restaurant and there was nothing wrong with the food or the service.

However, because the restaurant was busy and there were people waiting to be seated they tried to hurry us out. They asked us if we needed a taxi when we had not even finished our meal! And when we ordered coffees they said they had "run out of coffee"! We had been there for only 45 minutes and not taken too long over our meal.

We felt that this was rude.

Taste (Hunters Bar) - Katie Driver - 7th November 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Have eaten here on at least 6 occasions now and intend to keep going back!

Service is friendly, accommodating, efficient, and always with a smile.

Food is fresh and delicious. My boyfriend thinks the Italian breakfast is fantastic and the Italian sausage unbeatable!

I am working my way through the extensive sandwich and Panini menu and am yet to be disappointed. Would thoroughly recommend the bacon, goat's cheese and roast mushroom toasted Panini.

Home made Italian cakes also wonderful - try the muffins!

Will be continuing to return!

La Scala (Millhouses) - David & Amy - 6th November 2007

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We have been going to this restaurant approximately every month for the last four years and in all that time have never had a bad meal.

Amy is a "fish-etarian" so usually the choice of food for her is limited. Even though it is predominantly meat dishes, there are still a good amount of main courses and many starters to choose from for her.

Our love for food and wine is about the only thing we have in common with each other so throughout the four years we have made it our "hobby" to go to many different restaurants and pretend we are restaurant critics. Sad eh? :)

We take into consideration all the different factors that make a good dining experience.

A) Food quality
B) Service
C) Ambiance
D) Wine
E) Cost

After eating at the vast majority of all the restaurants in Sheffield we come back here time and time again, on the above points.

A) Food quality, very good, can sometimes vary slightly but overall consistently well above average. Our top dishes are the mushrooms in cream sauce for starters, steak and risotto balls for main. We have no complaints with the entire menu though.

B) Excellent, the owner shows an interest in the guests and the waiters/waitresses seem very professional, unlike some of the expensive restaurants on Ecclesall Road which employ students.

C) Very nice, not at all pretentious but still maintaining an element of class. Decor is of a theatre setting and has an olde-worlde Italian feel, perfect for groups and romantic meals for two.

D) A large choice of wine but as we are not quite as fussy about wine we always go for the house red which is £10 for a 1 litre bottle. Spot on.

E) Taking all the above into consideration we feel the price reflects very good value, even with three starters, a steak main and a litre bottle of wine the bill rarely exceeds £50.

We will continue to visit this hidden gem of a restaurant forever.
