Felicini (Hunters Bar) - Will Beauchamp - 7th May 2009

I have eaten at Felicini many times now and I have to say, the experience just gets better and better. Wonderful setting and decor, fantastic food and decent prices for the quality.

Before you are seated at your table, there is the opportunity to sample some of the finest cocktails available on Ecclesall Road. Costing between £6 and £7, there are cheaper places but these are special - I particularly recommend the mojito, but all are made using fresh ingredients and taste amazing.

Once seated, you are presented with the menu - there is a varied selection of dishes but unlike many other Italians, the menu isn't swamped with the 'usual' Italian choices - there's everything from risottos to pizza to fish dishes. All are cooked fresh and presented perfectly. Unlike other restaurants, you are not given gargantuan portions of food - the focus here tends to be on the quality of ingredients and combination of flavours, which I consider to be the two most important factors of restaurant eating. Sure, there are more fancy Italian restaurants in Sheffield (Marco @ Milano and the Ivory) but none can match Felicini on value for money. 2 course meal for two and drinks came to just over £45.

But the most notable part of the dining experience at Felicini has to be the service. Too often in the past has my evening been let down by rude staff, sloppy service and silly mistakes. The staff at Felicini are well-presented, polite, swift and always happy to go out of their way to help you. You need only to make brief eye contact and they are over at the double. For this reason, I always tip generously, as the staff have truly earned it.

All in all then, a great dining experience at a great price. If you haven't eaten there yet, I strongly recommend it. However, make sure to book a few days in advance as it normally very busy.

Silversmiths Restaurant & Bar (City Centre) - David Oldershaw - 30th April 2009

Very impressed by the light touch of the chefs in the kitchen.

Our meal for 2 on 29/4/2009 started with prawns and a pear salad. It's so easy to serve undercooked (for fear of over cooking them) or overcooked prawns that are like elastic bands. Thankfully ours were cooked to perfection. Whilst the slices of pears were on the 'crunchy' side, the dressing on the salad and prawns was light, fruity and perfectly balanced for the 2 main ingredients.

I didn't taste my companion's main course although she said it was a very good flaky tart of some description (the food not her), as I didn't want to have to share any of my pigeon with new potatoes. Again, a meat that is difficult to get right, I was served 2 perfectly cooked breasts along with some slices of new potatoes and salad leaves. Again, the accompanying dressing and some intense jammy/confit of whatever was superb.

We both had a large glass of wine and although my Malbec was pricey it was a great glass of velvety fruityness.

Not a big one for deserts I opted for the cheese (3 types), which came with plenty of crackers. My friend had a weird concoction of brioche with minted bananas - yes, minted bananas. The mint was very subtle (I did get a taste of this in exchange for some smoked cheese I wasn't keen on), so subtle it was hardly worth it. We found out after that this was its first outing on the menu and probably its last as it was a damp squib compared to the rest of the meal.

Overall, excellent value at £45 for the 2 of us, bearing in mind my expensive glass of red and somewhere I would go back to quite soon.

We visited Artisan for the 3rd time on Valentine's Day. The first couple of times were fine, the last time though was shocking. We were kept waiting for half an hour to sit at our booked table. We were told that a waiter would take our drinks order but they never arrived. We didn't get the menu explained to us and the food was revolting.
The staff were useless and we kept getting asked every 5 minutes if we wanted more drinks.

The whole evening cost £150 for 2 of us and it was terrible.

To be fair, the manager was good when we complained and gave us £80 worth of vouchers but we definitely wont be going back. Overpriced and pretentious.

This is our favourite restaurant. Always excellent food, first class service from such wonderful people. Everyone should visit this restaurant at least once to know what others should aspire to achieve!

El Paso (City Centre) - Stephanie Jenkins - 7th April 2009

Amazing Latin American food and I loved the atmosphere. I've been to El Paso on numerous occasions and it really is a great experience and have to say that I agree with all the reviews posted here. It is a fantastic establishment.

All of the food we ate was simply fantastic. But I have to say personally that the fajitas were to die for. I work not too far away and have recommended this place to so many people, not only at work - but also locally to where I live, and they have also been there, and it is safe to say that they are all of the same opinion. Great food, great service. Definitely worth a visit!

Went there for Sunday brunch this morning - very disappointed. Paid £6.95 for a tiny cooked breakfast - 1 tiny piece of bacon, 1 egg, 1 mushroom, half a tomato and a miniscule piece of back pudding - we didn't even get a sausage (although we noticed on the menu once we had left there was meant to be one). Definitely would not return.

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Dave - 5th April 2009

I have been going to this place for the last 9 years and I'm still going! Very welcoming and professional.

I really enjoy Indian food and in the past I've been able to eat at a lot of them up and down the country due to work commitments, and you'd be hard pressed to beat Everest Tandoori.

Please try mumtaz methi gosht, pilau rice and peshwari nan sweet one you will love them.

Wig & Pen Bar & Restaurant (City Centre) - Craig - 30th March 2009

Went for meal on the 26th March. Food and service was good. Price good, pretty much what you would expect for 2 people (£66 - 3 courses & bottle wine).

Only observation, it wasn't very busy & lacked a bit of atmosphere, but no doubt at busy times its nice place to dine

Definitely recommend.

Walnut Club (Hathersage) - John Fields - 30th March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

After reading the excellent review by Helen Roach, she seems to review most restaurants and very honest, it has made me write in as well. Reading some of these reviews it seems most people are quick to slam the restaurants and hardly go on to say about good experiences, so taking Helen's lead... I have to say we dined at The Walnut Club, Hathersage on Saturday evening 28th March, Ecclesall Road's big sister restaurant... and we add that is excellent, too!

I must say that I have been several times over the years and the true word I can use for the Walnut Club at either venue is consistency of great food and service... but back to Saturday night...

I had Whitby crab cakes for a starter, which was light, fresh and well balanced with cucumber and taste of saffron. For main I had Beef Wellington, I have to say this was perfectly cooked... so many get it wrong, as it is a difficult dish to cook... the buttered leeks finished it completely, and dessert... wow... The Lemon tart... you must try this dish, zest, fresh and melted in your mouth... I want the recipe!

We had the table for the evening and we were entertained by live music from Dizzy Club, one of Sheffield's best bands... evening from 7:30PM to 11:30PM complete, very happy and left wanting more! My gripe is that Hathersage is only open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays now... they did say this would change and will open during the week from Easter onwards but recommended I dine at Sheffield as they are open all week.

Piccolos (City Centre) - Darren Beadsley - 26th March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Not good at all I'm afraid, especially compared with other established Italians in the area.

The menu is extremely dull with everything you would expect on a basic Italian menu but no surprises or special touches... lasagne, spag bol, garlic bread. This would be OK if the food was up to scratch. My partner had the lasagne, which we both thought tasted pre bought... very readymeal-ish. My steak, which cost £18, was small and bland, served with re-cooked vegetables. The menu as a whole was extremely expensive for what you are getting, which seemed to be pre-cooked, or pre-bought food.

Milestone (Shalesmoor) - Helen St Claire - 26th March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have eaten at this establishment recently, as I live locally and really wanted to have a local eatery that I would feel welcome in. Unfortunately this place is not it. For a start, although I live locally I found it hard to relax in this place as it was filled with drunk, loud people who had obviously been out in the city centre.

Secondly the menu, unlike the prices stated on this website are very expensive. Around £9.00 for a starter and around £18.00 for a sub-standard main course. The drinks are extortionate also. The cocktails are around £3.00 more expensive than any other Sheffield establishment and I think I got slightly ripped off with the wine. I ordered a glass of house white and when I had to pay I saw that I had been given a expensive glass of vino.

Unfriendly to locals, caters for towny types and very expensive I'm afraid I would not recommend to anyone.

Wong Ting (City Centre) - Natasha Crawford - 24th March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

The service that we received at this restaurant was absolutely disgusting. You will either get ignored or speak to a member of staff that cannot speak English.

The food is reasonable but always cold. My sister and I went for a meal today and had to wait 2 hours for our main course, which we ended up sending back and only paying for what we ate. The staff were still rude to us and threw the bill at our table and muttered under their breath.

I would recommend anybody who wants at least an OK standard of service to not go here.

Devonshire Arms (Dore) - Vicky Camplin - 22nd March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

My husband and I, my mother-in-law, and my three children went here on Mother's Day. Granted it was Mother's Day and you'd expect a short wait for your meal but we got there at 12:30PM and had to wait an hour and a half for our food. Absolutely ridiculous.

We have been here several times before and it's not taken as long as it did today. We had to have a special menu and not use the normal menu as well, so it was very expensive. The staff didn't apologise for the wait or tell me that there'd be a special menu on. We won't be coming back.

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Laura Talbot - 22nd March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Everest epitomizes the casual, caring and harmonious qualities that I had often heard of as being synonymous with the Indian sub-continent. Not only do they serve great meals but also make an effort to know you and greet you personally each time you visit them.

I try convincing everyone to celebrate their birthdays at Everest all the time. The last time I went there for an anniversary celebration, all of us - from 2 to 72 were equally pleased at the experience.

The earthy ambience, radiant smiles from staff and customized food, makes it a perfectly refreshing experience every time I visit. Thanks guys!

Maranello's Italian Restaurant (Ecclesall) - Charles Hoyland - 16th March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Went with friends for a birthday celebration. Maranello's is on Ecclesall Road, in what used to be Trattoria Romana. New name; same awful seats. We vowed not to go back to Trattoria Romana, as the seats are the worst we have ever sat on in a restaurant. They look like they were made from the rods used in reinforced concrete, and are so uncomfortable it spoilt our evening out a couple of years ago.

The next downer was the prices. We eat in Italian restaurants regularly, and were surprised at how expensive a lot of the dishes were. Apart from soup and bruschetta (£4.50) nearly all the starters were in the £6-£8 range. Mains too were expensive apart from the pizza and pasta options. My wife had baked cod; decent, but over-priced at £15. I had seafood spaghetti; nowhere near as good as is served elsewhere in Sheffield.

We were brought dessert menus, and it reminded us of being in Spain on holiday, where you walk past a restaurant and all the meals are shown as pictures so you know what egg, chips and beans actually looks like. Here, the desserts - bought-in - are shown pictorially in case you had difficulty visualising ice cream.

We waited for ages; nobody came to ask us what we wanted so when they did we decided not to bother and requested the bill. When it came, we had been charged for more drinks than we actually had. They did apologise, and quickly rectified the error but the whole experience from the horrible seats to the over-priced food and indifferent service meant we left regretting that we didn't book elsewhere.

Cubana (City Centre) - Rachel - 11th March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I decided to look at the other reviews of Cubana and was utterly shocked!

I was taken there as a surprise on Valentine's Day and was totally impressed. The service was warm and friendly, we were frequently asked if we were OK or wanted drinks and everything was brought quickly.

The food was a set Tapas menu and we thought it was great, very flavoursome and plentiful.

The atmosphere was particularly good! We ate late so they were finishing service, the tables were all moved aside to create a dance floor. The music was traditional and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

I was looking forward to going again but I'm less sure now. Maybe I'll just leave my opinion of my amazing evening untainted and enjoy the memories

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Helen Roach - 8th March 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Friendly staff who knew the menu well, delicious food, and although the prices are on the upper end for Sheffield, it was well worth it.

Chef was able to accommodate our off-menu requests. We did have to put down a £10 per person deposit for Saturday night but this was transferable.

On the whole a memorable experience for the right reasons.

Vito's Italian Restaurant (Walkley) - Tamlin McPherson - 24th February 2009

Another fantastic night. Vito opened his restaurant so my friend and I could celebrate a birthday. The service was superb, the food was outstanding and the wine is without compare in Sheffield.

El Paso (City Centre) - Laura Jameson - 23rd February 2009

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I came to Sheffield for Valentine's Day with my boyfriend for the weekend. On the first night we were looking for somewhere to eat. El Paso looked inviting from the website and the extensive menu was very appealing so we decided to book.

The restaurant's atmosphere was cosy and romantic and it is the ideal place in which to share an intimate meal with a partner or indeed with a group of friends/family.

Staff were extremely attentive and efficient and the food was amazing. I have never eaten a steak cooked more perfectly in my life. We loved our evening there so much that we knew no other restaurant could compete with it...so the next night we returned and had another fabulous meal. Excellent.
