Dosanj (City Centre) - Sven-E Reitan - 18th November 2009

My wife and I went out for a meal 15/11/2009, and because we had some vouchers for Dosanj we decided to go for a curry.
When we got in we were met by a very bright and clinical light in front of the room. However we were seated closer to the kitchen, so this didn't bother us while waiting for our food.
Now, we don't mind waiting, but having to wait more than an hour to get our food is a joke, especially when the restaurant is only 3/4 full. During our wait we noticed that a few tables sent their food back, for what reason I don't know. We also noticed that there were lightbulbs missing in more than half of the ceiling, wires were visible all over and there were a general lack of attention for details and finish.
When the food finally arrived it was a tiny portion but enough rice and a small naan. It tasted good, but not amazing as you would expect when they have the nerve to charge £15 for a curry! (I've had better take away meals form Everest and Shaah.) At the end of the night I noticed two things that really shocked me:
1. While waiting for the bill I saw the guy who did the dishes recycle vegetables (carrot flowers) from dishes brought in from tables to dishes going out to new table.
2. A certificate from Eat Sheffield, saying Dosanj is the best newcomer in 2009. If this is true, I will dread visit the other competitors in this category for 2009.
Popolo Bar Lounge & Kitchen (City Centre) - Julie Papp - 16th November 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I was very disappointed when I recently visited Popolo with three friends.
For a starter I ordered the garlic mushrooms served on toasted home made bread - what I actually got was garlic mushroom with what can only be described as a large crouton served on the side. One of my friends ordered large flat mushrooms with a cream and dill sauce - what she received was large mushrooms topped with mozzarella cheese and spinach on toasted bread!
Two of our party, including myself, ordered the beef stroganoff for mains but had to send them back because the food was cold. When the plates returned the portion size had dramatically shrunk and the stroganoff has no sauce whatsoever. At this point one of my friends had tried her dish, chicken breast rolled in mozzarella and bacon to find it was packed with sage leaves and because of the overpowering taste of this strong herb was unable to eat it.
The manager did allow us to choose again from the menu which meant that one person was eating their main while three were waiting for their meal to be cooked again.
I was disappointed that having spent just under £93 for lunch nothing was knocked off the bill and no complimentary drink was offered. However I must say that the waiting staff were very friendly, efficient and could not apologise enough!
Strines Inn (Bradfield) - Claire Kay - 15th November 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I'm not a review writer but having just experienced the worst and the best of Sheffield's eateries I thought I'd add to this site. (See my "worst restaurant " review of Canton Orchard.)
This ancient pub set in the most beautiful rolling and wild Peak District landscape (yet so close to the centre up the A57) just served up one of the best roast dinners I've ever had outside of my mum's kitchen!
Hot plate, real gravy, homemade Yorkshire pud, homemade sauces (mustard, apple sauce) colourful fresh boiled veggies and at a very reasonable price. Friendly staff, log fires... can't recommend it highly enough.
Canton Orchard (Ranmoor) - Claire Kay - 15th November 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I was looking for a quality restaurant with good food and after reading a review here that gave this place A+, I called up and booked a table for me and my dad.
We got lost and ended up arriving not a second after 10 minutes late. A man (I assume the manager) walked briskly up to meet us and as we said "Hi we're really sorry but…" he cut us short and very rudely said "No you're late you can't come in'.
Completely taken aback we pointed out we were only 10 minutes late. He butted in before we could finish and said "I told you to come at 7:15PM, you didn't so you can't come in" and started to herd us out.
The young girl / waitress standing next to him (who could have been his daughter) rolled her eyes in apparent embarrassment and turned away in a manner that suggested she'd seen it all before.
Needless to say we left but it put a real dampener on the night. I would strongly recommend against going to this place. No customer service skills at all, and I can't begin to imagine how his poor staff survive working under him.
Dosanj (City Centre) - Suzanne - 15th November 2009
Please note: this restaurant is no longer trading.
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I don't particularly like submitting negative feedback but sometimes it's the only way a place can improve.
Dosanj has the potential to be something special, it's in a great location and a modern designed building, but really that's where it ends...
We went on a Saturday night at 8:30PM. As you enter the lighting is quite bright and uncosy. We took a seat by the open kitchen, which doesn't really do the restaurant any favours, as you can see lots of plastic containers and unsightly kitchen utensils with bright kitchen lights, more like a takeaway ambience!
The flustered waitress came to our table and said, sorry you've been waiting the kitchen's gone mad tonight! Mmmm reassuring... and it wasn't even that busy!
We ordered drinks and looked at the menu... expensive is all I can say, glad we had come with our 'Charity Unleashed' vouchers. I ordered chicken tikka masala and my husband chicken korma. The dishes cost £15 approx but came with rice and a naan as part of the dish. Bearing in mind I didn't really want a naan so its a strange kind of concept.
We waited and waited and 1 hour later out came the food, which fair enough looked pretty on the plate but not worthy of its price tag and not a patch on many of the other Indian restaurants in Sheffield. Quite off-putting watching one of the 'chefs' taking carrot flower decorations that had been left uneaten off one guests plate to use on another as well!
Anyway before leaving we went to the lavatories upstairs and the whole of the floor is not in use. There was a TV in a corner and 2 chairs. Not much attention to detail in this place and we feel they are trying to be something they quite clearly are not!
Gordon Ramsay would have a field day! We will not return.
La Tasca (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Claire Leach - 13th November 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Fabulous restaurant! 5-star food, 5-star service. A most enjoyable experience. We will continue to return again and again.
All the staff are happy and make you feel welcome, children are always welcome, too, and activities are supplied. There is a good menu choice and drinks selection.
Something for everyone.
George & Dragon (Wentworth) - Chris Hanson - 5th November 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Best Sunday lunch in the area!
Great tasting, properly hand-carved meat, real gravy, great roasts, Yorkshire puds and vegetables and even my wife's veggie option looked really tasty and appealing.
We went earlier this year with about 8 friends and were served in less than 20 minutes, on a busy Sunday lunch time.
Also they have a good range of ales, never a bad thing.
Angelo Cerrone's (Ecclesfield) - Kate - 1st November 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
There were four of us dining on 31st October. The atmosphere and food were excellent, I would recommend Cerrone's and will be visiting again in the near future.
El Paso (City Centre) - Frank Collins - 27th October 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
We visited El Paso restaurant this evening to celebrate my wife's birthday.
We have been to both Italy and Mexico so can compare the quality of the food with the real thing. It was our first visit to El Paso and we really were pleasantly
surprised!
We found the prices to be very reasonable and the wines were definitely not overpriced.
Although most tables in the restaurant were full by 8:30PM, the service was impeccable, the food (especially the fajitas), was out of this world.
The timing of the service was ideal, leaving a pleasant break between courses.
We were treated to complimentary sambucas by the manager in honour of the birthday visit.
It was our first visit to El Paso but it will certainly not be our last!
Papa Ciccios Restaurant (Sandygate) - Michael and Jacqui Potts - 27th October 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Visited this restaurant last Saturday night. Although the place is small the atmosphere is cosy and the waiters are very welcoming and courteous. The menu is extensive and there are extra specials on a chalk board. Don't know how the chef gets all the meals to perfection out on time given the many choices available.
The fillet steak and fish are to die for and excellent value. A plus with this restaurant is that customers can take their own wine with a small charge for corkage so giving an excellent evening out without breaking the bank. Well done guys.
Would recommend that you book and one final thing, only cash and cheques accepted when settling the bill.
Saffron Club (City Centre) - Sarah Green - 26th October 2009
Please note: this restaurant is no longer trading.
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
This restaurant was excellent in both food & service.
Visited the restaurant this Friday 23rd October with my husband. The food was delicious, fresh & tasty and the service was second to none!
We had been due to see Elton John in concert who cancelled at the last minute... although Elton let us down that evening the Saffron Club did not!
Highly recommend anyone to go this restaurant.
Silversmiths Restaurant & Bar (City Centre) - K Wragg - 26th October 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
We called Saturday morning to book a table for that evening and left a message. We were politely called back to say that unfortunately they were full, but would keep our number in case of a cancellation (great customer service).
We arrived in Sheffield and, as the restaurant is close to the train station, we called in on the off chance. They accommodated us very well, as we said that we wouldn't stay long as we were going on to a concert.
The food very nice, the ambience spot on, hosts great, food prices reasonable. All in all a very enjoyable experience
Robin Hood Inn (Stannington) - Richard Stevenson - 18th October 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
I had a great meal here the other day. The staff were really friendly, and the pork Sunday lunch was spot on; tender pork with lots of crackling, stuffing and apple sauce. I'd really recommend making the journey to this place, it's a real gem.
Wong Ting (City Centre) - Natasha Crawford - 13th October 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
The food is OK, if you get it that is.
The staff are so rude it's unbelievable. My sister, my father and I used to go every week for about a year. But the staff became unbearable so we stopped going.
They will shout at you, throw your bills on the table, over charge you, stand by and wait for tips. They all stand around each other speaking in Chinese, while they all look over point and laugh at you.
However if you are Chinese I would definitely recommend this place, because that's the only way you seem to get a nice service.
Chez Lahlou (Steel Bank) - Karen - 8th October 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Have been to this restaurant a couple of times and have always thoroughly enjoyed it.
The staff are welcoming and the menu is extensive.
The portions are very generous and very tasty. Be warned, I would not order a starter if I were you, as you get so much complimentary food, e.g. marinated chicken wings, which are delicious. They also have seasonal dishes such as pheasant.
A yummy 10/10.
Nawaab (City Centre) - Craig Moran - 2nd October 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
Well, myself and my girlfriend went to Nawaab on a Sunday night around 6PM. We were very impressed with modern decor and the layout of the restaurant.
We were seated and given the menu. The menu was very extensive, and along with having the usual Indian dishes (e.g. Baltis, Rogan Josh etc…) we were pleasantly surprised that the restaurant's chefs are also able to do fusion and new styles and ideas of cooking.
I myself am from just outside of Manchester so am used to some pretty impressive Indian cooking due to being so close to Rusholme's infamous Curry Mile.
I can honestly say hand on heart that the food was amazing. We decided to give the following marks to the restaurant.
Speed of service - 8/10
Food - 9/10
Friendliness of staff - 6/10 (was quite quiet and they looked bored to be fair to them)
Value for money - 8/10 - £31 for two starters, two mains and two J2Os
Atmosphere and decor - 8/10
Overall score 39/50
I would definitely recommend Nawaab to anyone, as the food was brilliant.
El Paso (City Centre) - Rose & James - 27th September 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
We visited El Paso on Saturday 19th September for our anniversary after reading all the good reviews on this website.
When my husband had booked the table he'd mentioned that it was our anniversary but to be honest I think the staff had forgotten this fact and we were too shy to mention it again.
When we arrived, we were shown to our table. It was around ten minutes before we were asked what we would like to drink (I'd discovered the drinks list on a table positioned next to us) and given a menu each.
The slight delay was fine by us, as we overheard that there was a Chilean party going on upstairs so the staff were quite busy directing guests etc... That said the service was still as attentive as it needed to be throughout the meal.
To begin with, my husband had Meatballs 'El Paso' and I had the Funghi Ripieni, which was mushrooms filled with tuna, garlic, parsley and mozzarella cheese. Both dishes were lovely and served piping hot, which was impressive considering a group of about 8 who had not booked beforehand placed their order at the same time!
For our main course we had carbonara (plus a side order of garlic bread with cheese) and Halibut Palta with vegetables and potatoes. My husband said his carbonara was nice but he had tasted better, however, he said the garlic bread was lovely. My halibut was delicious, as the fish meat just slipped off the bone. The vegetables were also cooked to perfection.
To finish, although we were quite full, I decided to have the profiteroles with a hot chocolate sauce - absolute heaven! My husband had a chocolate ice cream-based dessert (neither of us can remember the name of it now), which he said was really enjoyable.
The staff are very attentive and my wine glass was never empty, much to my regret the next morning! We were even invited to attend the Chilean party upstairs by one of the waiters but we politely declined, as we had had a long day. Very nice thought though. The waiters seem to love their jobs and one particular waiter (light skinned and tall) kept singing along to the music coming from upstairs, which made me giggle!
Overall a lovely night out but we couldn't help wondering how much nicer it would have been if they'd remembered it was our special night. Oh well, we'll just have to go back next year... if not before!

Went to Azzurri on Ecclesall Road on the night of Saturday 19th September. We had a table for 2 booked for 8:30PM and arrived at 8:20PM. The table was not ready, however they took our wine order at the bar and showed us to our table at 8:30PM. They took our order at 8:40PM, so far so good. However, at 9:25PM the food had not arrived so we complained. The excuse was they where short staffed in the kitchen, they had a full restaurant, so everyone would be waiting. So service was not great.
When the food came it was mediocre, the sea bass was edging on over cooked, steak was OK. Just that - OK.
The best laugh we had was when they served the vegetables. We ask them to leave the tray and we would serve ourselves as we needed. We were told that they were not allowed to leave the dish on the table. Not quite sure what that was all about, so we asked them to put all the vegetables on our plates.
Conclusion - not on our Christmas card list.
Canton Orchard (Ranmoor) - Adah Jones - 6th September 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
A+.
The best Chinese restaurant in Sheffield if you are looking for a high standard surroundings and high quality food.
Plus, they sell the cheapest wines within all the restaurants in Sheffield, including those good and luxury ones. The manager told us he can always get good bargains on it, thanks for his generous sharing. Just ask him for recommendations, really generous person.
My father has been their customer for almost 15 years, sometimes take us to try other restaurants, but always go back to Canton Orchard. Looking forward to my birthday party next month... I miss the yummy food there!
Surely, if you want cheap junk, I wouldn't recommend this Canton Orchard, you can certainly find those 'eat what you can' or noodle bars in town, not Ranmoor area.
Silversmiths Restaurant & Bar (City Centre) - Tom & Petra - 5th September 2009
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
We ended up at Silversmith's after finding out that Kumquat Mae had closed (all reviews had sounded spot on for what we'd had in mind). Silversmith's didn't sound too bad, liked the idea of local sourcing, and so we gave it a whirl for a celebration meal.
Initial impressions from approaching the restaurant were encouraging; the simple, white, unassuming building seemed quiet and welcoming. To be honest, the interior decor was a shock with its harsh black, white and red colour scheme, flooring spot lights, plastic flowers and something not quite right about the tables and chairs.
The food more than compensated for the surroundings: tasty combinations of flavours, clearly skilled cooking and presentation, just the right size portions and all tied up in a very reasonable bill. Excellent wine and prompt, polite service.
Overall: 8.5/10 (mainly limited by the decor).
We will definitely return, and recommend to others.
