Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Mary Smith - 2nd May 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I went to Everest last week with a couple of friends. It was excellent service with delicious food!

To begin with I had karahi tikka chicken for my starter. The taste was beautiful. And for my main course I had Mumtaz Methi Gosht with garlic nan. It was divine.

I've booked for my birthday party next month for 20 people and I'm looking forward to showing my family & friends one of the best Indian restaurants I've ever been to!

East & West (Sharrow) - Sonia Lancaster - 2nd May 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

If you want to eat real, authentic south Indian food then this is the place for you. Loosely described as a "restaurant", the place has a welcoming and homely feel to it; anyway once the food has arrived you totally forget your surroundings!

Starting with chili paneer, followed by a Masala Dosa - that crispy rice and lentil paper-thin pancake stuffed with tasty potato curry, served with lentil and vegetable stew (Sambar), coconut chutney and another chutney, all finished off with Ras mali.

The cost of 3 courses for 3 people plus drinks (not licensed) was £38 and I can't remember when I've had a better meal in a long time at 4 times the cost. It's obvious that others think so, too, with the numbers of people coming through the doors. Can't wait to visit again!

Rowsha (Walkley) - Sarah - 1st May 2010

I had a meal here with my boyfriend about a month ago. We were absolutely happy with the service and with our food. The woman who served us was also very friendly. I would say this is the best Lebanese restaurant I've been to in Sheffield.

However, the second time I had food from there, I had it delivered. I have to say the delivery guy was very rude and very disrespectful. Ever since then, I've never ordered food from them. I prefer to go to the restaurant as the service was much better over there.

Canteen (Crosspool) - Suzie Eastwood - 15th April 2010
Please note: this restaurant is no longer trading.

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have to agree with David, below, about Richard Smith's restaurant chain: we went to Artisan (ed: Canteen) for the first time in several months on Saturday and were sorely disappointed.

The high-end touches that made it feel special have all disappeared, the menu has been condensed and revised to appear more like a gastro-pub menu and the service was poor, yet the prices were not adjusted to reflect all this. I had come onto this site because I was looking for ideas for a new favourite restaurant!

23 Bar and Restaurant (City Centre) - T Lox - 11th April 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have just visited this restaurant and found a hair in my food. Obviously I complained to the head waiter and was given no satisfactory apology. Don't bother spending any money here

Popolo Bar Lounge & Kitchen (City Centre) - Jo Allen - 27th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Had a meal on Friday 26th March 2010.

We had potato skins & pizza bread to start - food was delicious. Lovely & hot, great service.

For mains we had salmon pasta & calzone. Again, food was delicious, not long to wait between courses.

For pudding we had tiramisu & cheesecake - cheesecake was to die for! Fantastic.

Staff were great – nothing was too much trouble.

Would definitely recommend. 10/10

Cricket Inn (Totley) - David - 26th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We've been to the Cricket Inn and other Richard Smith places around Sheffield loads of times but feel that it has now become very repetitive, corners are being cut and something that was once really good now feels like the sort of chain that would be better avoided.

The food wasn't bad, just OK. Choice was not as good as it used to be and the printed menu looked like something from a Beefeater-type place. Sad because it used to be far better than all the other pubs offering food.

I think we'll be looking elsewhere in future.

Mamma Amalfi (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Angela Mortlock - 24th March 2010

Description of food against what was served was totally wrong. The salad had a bit of tuna plonked on the top and was very dry, and the spaghetti with tiger prawns had 2 prawns and looked like a full tin of tinned tomatoes had been tipped on the top!

Worst £40 ever spent!

Yuen Shan (Highfield) - Gemma Wilson - 20th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have ordered three times from Yuen Shan.

First time the order didn't all turn up, but I was offered money off on my next order, which I accepted, as the food that came was fine.

Second time the food was fine, but took around an hour or so to turn up. I was told when I ordered that it would be 45 minutes, so nothing too much to complain about I suppose.

I ordered for the third time tonight and wasn't happy at all! The order took just under two hours to turn up after being told it would be between 45 and 55 minutes when I ordered. The food was barely above room temperate, nearly inedible. There were strange jelly bits in my black bean sauce, which I've never had before when ordering from other Chinese restaurants. I'm hoping I'll not ill tonight.

Sadly, I don't think I'll be going there again!

Papa Ciccios Restaurant (Sandygate) - Kadr - 19th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have been there for two years and every time I go there I really enjoy the food.

The staff are very friendly and polite when I eat in Papa Ciccios and I feel I eat in a family restaurant in Italy.

I recommended to some friends and they all have the same feeling as I have in Papa Ciccios.

La Gondola (City Centre) - Ricky - 18th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We were just passing as we saw the restaurant, looked nice had their own bar so we decided to go in.

We didn't have reservations but the staff did all they could to fit us in. They were polite and pleasant throughout the service, and what made it even more pleasant was the food quality. I'm never shy to complain but I had nothing to complain about, thanks.

Hope to make reservations for Saturday.

Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Hazel Poole - 17th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Me, my partner and two friends went to the Everest on Friday 12th March. I have never been before; the other people in the party had been and said it was lovely. It is an Indian as you are probably aware but as we got there we were all greeted warmly and pleasant by the owner of the restaurant. We got drinks at the bar and waited just a few minutes for a table.

Me and my partner had poppadoms and a pickle tray, which were lovely. We had onion bhaji to share and I must say it was lovely. I've had onion bhajis in the past at restaurants and they can be completely dry. For mains I had a standard chicken and mushroom curry, my partner had a chicken madras, we shared a garlic naan, chips and pilau rice.

The meal was lovely and very reasonably priced even with two drinks.

The service was very good and waiters were very pleasant. There was a good atmosphere in the restaurant and I can't wait to go back again soon. Try it, you will want to go back.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Paul Woollatt - 17th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Ref:- Saturday Evening 6th March 2010.

In response to the recent review by Sandra Heigold.

My wife and I were dining with a couple of friends at Marco @ Milano, which we had booked a while in advance and were really looking forward to the evening, as this is always a special place for us.

Our friends had never been before and came on our high recommendation.

Our night was unfortunately disrupted by two couples on another table who were being loud, arrogant and obnoxious to say the least, with regards an issue with one of their starters, but proceeded to finish another two courses before refusing to pay for their meals.

Their comments and conduct were completely exaggerated and clearly caused upset to Marco's staff, especially his sister, who was the waitress serving both our table and the people's in question.

I know from experience of many memorable evenings at Marco @ Milano, Marco and his staff take immense pride in the high quality and attention to detail of the food and professional service.

The behaviour of these people was completely over the top and unwelcome in this high-quality establishment, they obviously need teaching a few lessons in manners and etiquette towards other diners.

The food and service at Marco @ Milano compares highly to any other top restaurant in the area and this night was no exception.

Milestone (Shalesmoor) - Chris Hanson - 15th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

This place is a real gem. We took our parents last night for a Mother's Day meal, as we'd heard good reviews from friends about it. We were also impressed with the price they were charging, even in comparison with what some of the really awful places were charging, and the amazing smells you get from the upstairs open-plan kitchen.

For starter I had beetroot salad with fennel, home made cottage cheese and walnuts. The contrast in flavour and texture of all the ingredients was excellent, along with it being something 99 percent of places wouldn't have on a standard Mother's Day menu. My wife had the pork terrine. This was both flavoursome and pleasing to the eye and came with some fresh bread and a few mixed leaves.

For mains I went for the roast pork and my wife for the bream with cockles and samphire. The pork was really well-cooked and came with excellent crackling and apple sauce. One small complaint is that the vegetables could have been a little hotter, but that really would be me nitpicking. All the elements of the dinner were done well. The gravy was good and not like wallpaper paste like so many places serve gravy. You could tell it had been made in the tray the meat had been cooked in. The Yorkshire pudding was great along with the roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, etc...

My wife's bream was well-cooked with nice crisp skin, a smooth flavoursome creamy sauce and well-cooked clams and samphire.

For dessert I went for the custard tart with rhubarb. This was the low point of the meal for me. The custard tart filling was excellent, topped with loads of grated nutmeg and a really rich custard. The pastry was too thick and over cooked (highlighted when I sent a piece flying across the restaurant floor when trying to cut it in half). The rhubarb component was just a thin line of really nice sauce. I was expecting pieces of rhubarb or even just a little bit more of the sauce to be honest.

All in all though, the pluses by far outweigh the minuses. The range of drinks at the bar is excellent, the service is great (this included a call the day before to confirm booking), the atmosphere in the restaurant is really good and for £15.95 for a 3 course meal on Mothers Day I don't think many places could beat it for value. We will definitely be returning to try the restaurant menu, as it is one of the better meals we've had in Sheffield.

Peacock Inn (Owler Bar) - Claire Finneran - 15th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Mother's Day - what a terrible experience. We booked a table for 10 guests at 16:00, it took nearly 25 minutes at least before we ordered drinks and that was when we had to get up and ask a waitress to take our order.

We ordered our food from the set Mother's Day menu, and were advised approximately 10 minutes after that there were no scallops, which were on the set menu. We were not offered an alternative starter from the normal menu, even though the other options were not to personal liking.

All starters arrived, albeit one that was incorrect and didn't arrive until everyone else had nearly finished their starters. The starters that we did receive were not to the specification in the menu, and certain ingredients were missing.

Once the main courses arrived, 90 minutes after being seated, they were freezing cold. The gravy had skinned over, the portions would not fill a child. And again ingredients were missing from menu, i.e. onion rings from the burger. One main course was wrong.

Once we spoke to the manager we were advised they had ran out of certain foods at 3PM, before we arrived, but we were never advised of this once seated. We were not happy to stay for the main course and left instantly. The manager did not even apologise and had a severe lack of customer service. He only offered to re-cook the meals again, and also refused to touch the food when we asked him to - to prove we were not overreacting.

This totally ruined x3 mothers' day around the table and we would not recommend anyone to visit this place unless it's for a drink. Only save your petrol money. Do not book here for a special occasion, you will be highly disappointed.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Robert - 13th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I had duck in a red wine sauce with caramelised onions. For £14.95 I got four pathetic little slices of duck, five slices of carrot and two slices of courgette. No potatoes because the waitress only brought six portions of vegetables between ten people. On questioning why the lack of vegetables the waitress agreed to bring more, these were brought just after we had all finished eating.

Then on the sweet menu you notice that the sweets are £5.95, and cheese and biscuits are £6.50. So we decided that we had been well and truly fleeced with the main course, so the sweet could go and jump.

Then after being presented with the bill, I was horrified to see that I had been charged £3.55 for half a lager. Yes that 's right, £7.10 per pint.

So as you can see my review is that the service is first class, the food quality is excellent, but the value for money is a total rip-off. And I would say I was more satisfied with the local chippy than this way overpriced, over-hyped fleecing restaurant. People leave well alone, you have been warned.
Otto Damahi (owner) responded on 16th March 2010:
I co-own the Mediterranean restaurant and have done so for the last 11 years. If you look at other independent restaurants locally you will quickly become aware that £14.95 for a main course is not unusual. We do not open tins or packets to make our food, we actually prepare it all from scratch. Chains can put a meal on a plate for far less but you may well get something very similar from the local supermarket for even less.

Your comment about the lager is misleading. Lager is sold in bottles, as it is in many places locally for a similar price. If you want pub prices, please go to the pub.

I notice that you did not complain to the staff about your duck portion. It's a shame you prefer to post a negative review rather than giving a restaurant the opportunity to put something right at the time.

Sweets are homemade, not bought-in. This is something some people will pay for and others will not. There are plenty of places you can get bought-in desserts for £4, but the mark up is considerably more on £4 than it is for us.

Prices are displayed in all restaurants and you have the choice to pay less elsewhere. If you wanted a cheap night out perhaps the chippy would have been a better choice. We have many regular customers who think good-quality, homemade food is worth a bit extra.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Joanne Lumley - 13th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

In reply to an earlier review. We were dinning at Marcos that night, as we regularly do. The food is always first class and the staff always friendly, professional and polite. They can never do enough for you. These rude, loud, annoying, drunk dinners are obviously professional complainers, and do it to get free meals and wine (as they did that night) wherever they go! Well done, it worked!

As for spoiling her birthday, not one of them showed any remorse for spoiling all the other diners in the restaurant's special occasions! It was Marco and his staff that came and apologised to us all personally.

I hope when we get to that age we know how to behave in a restaurant in front of other dinners.

Thank for ruining our special night.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Francis Flaherty - 10th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Marco at Milano has to be one of Sheffield's hidden gems.

I arrived at Milanos at 10:30PM with family and friends for a post-theatre supper, in what is, in my opinion, one of the finest Italian restaurants in the country, with its chic contemporary exterior and interior design, ambience, friendly attentive staff and fabulous food.

I highly recommend anyone who is local or visiting Sheffield to experience and taste this piece of continental excellence.

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Clare Bower - 9th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

The quality of food and the service is always excellent at Milanos. Staff particularly are always attentive and cheerful. In my opinion it is the best restaurant in Sheffield for food and atmosphere. The staff never rush you for your order and you can enjoy the bar area for a drink before your meal.

The food is modern Italian and the staff are very knowledgeable about the menu and will offer assistance if necessary.

I have been a chef and a waitress and Milanos would always be my first choice. I would happily eat there every week. Perfect place for dinner with family or friends and if you go during the week (Tuesday to Friday) they have a specials menu, which enables you to eat 1, 2 or 3 courses for a fixed price. The quality is the same as from the main menu. Puddings are delicious so save room for one!

Marco at Milano (Millhouses) - Sean Murphy - 9th March 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

In response to the last review for Milanos, I should like to say we eat at the restaurant regularly, the service and food are ALWAYS superb and the staff friendly and courteous.

We were also in the restaurant on Saturday 6th March, and the waitress was pleasant and was obviously trying to sort out the problem in a civilised manner, but the man in question was loud, would not listen and was very, very rude to her. He barely gave her a chance to speak, let alone resolve the problem. Another waiter came to speak to this group, he still continued to shout, the manager came to speak to them, away from the dining room, as by now this was spoiling the evening for the other dinners. This group were obviously just trying to get a free evening out by causing an unnecessary scene!
