Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.) My girlfriend and I ate here last week just before going to watch a film. I was slightly confused when I first entered, as I have never been before. After a few seconds I realised it was a subway type system, you select your desired taco, burrito, wrap, just like you would your bread at subway. Moving along you select your meat, cheese, sauces etc... I decided to go with steak and cheese tacos, although they were more like wraps than tacos, and about the size of a packet of Rolos. Bearing in mind I had 3 of these, on an empty stomach it was hardly enough to fill me up, for £6 I expected to at least receive a few fries or nachos. The steak within the taco (wrap) itself wasn't too bad, but the wrap lacked any sort of substance and seemed to have a strange odour that stayed on my fingers for a while after. I left a comment card with a negative review. It's just like any other fast food place, the quality of the food is nothing special, McDonald's or KFC downstairs will give you more value for money. Meals at KFC are roughly a fiver, maybe less, include a drink, fries and a decent main. Main meal alone at Chilango is £6. I left a negative review on a comment card whilst leaving and I will never be visiting again.

What a fantastic surprise finding Lokanta in Sheffield. I totally enjoyed every minute of the Lokanta experience. Great Turkish hospitality, fabulous presentation, combined with magnificently delicious Turkish food. Growing up with the taste of Turkish food, I am very pleased to say that Lokanta is doing a great job with their representation of Turkish cuisine. I wish them all the success and very happy to recommend Lokanta to everyone who would like to taste the real Turkish food. Aagrah (City Centre) - Ashutosh Kale - 20th July 2010

I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The food was ordinary and overpriced. But worst of all, the attitude of the staff there was unpalatable. I had reserved a table but was made to wait in the waiting area. When I enquired about it, instead of apologising I was rudely told by a staff member "Don't show us attitude. We are busy and people here reserve tables weeks in advance". Such arrogance! Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Gemma Bedford - 8th July 2010

I have been coming to Everest Restaurant for more than 4 years now and I have to say the food, the waiters and the service is brilliant. I always recommend Everest Restaurant to family and friends when they feel like having an Indian. I've been to many Indian restaurants around Sheffield but Everest has done it for me. Have visited this restaurant twice and both times been impressed with the service and quality of the food. On the first occasion my partner and I had a few drinks before coming across the restaurant unexpectedly. On the second visit we took my brother and sister-in-law, who were equally impressed. The moules marnierre starter and red snapper were lovely, but everything was cooked well and to order... will be going back shortly!

Had a meal at the Rushhour last night, absolutely great and such value for money. Service is excellent and food very fresh - can see it all being prepared. Such a shame that it was quite empty for a Saturday night. If you enjoy good fresh food then give it a try. Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Steve Dowds - 25th June 2010

We've been eating in Everest probably twice per month for at least 10 years. It is not just the best Indian restaurant in Sheffield, it is one of the best in the country. The food is fantastic. The staff are efficient and friendly and the service is excellent. They anticipate every need and remember regular customers' preferences, to the point where all I have to do is walk in and they serve the beer I want without me even having to ask for it! Perfect. One weekend we couldn't come in as I was unwell. When the staff at Everest heard we couldn't come in, they delivered our favourite meal to our house, even though we live some miles away outside their regular delivery area. I can't commend them highly enough. The food is absolutely excellent. Go for the Chicken Tikka Karai to start and then have a Chicken Handy - I think these are the best dishes on the menu. But if you want to experiment and try something not on the menu, they'll do that, too. It is unrivalled value for money - I've eaten in places in London & Manchester where the food wasn't half as good as in Everest but they charged 4 times what Everest do. Go there. You won't be disappointed, it's the best. (Just don't go at 9PM on a Friday - I want to get my regular table!)

The food at Portofino is consistently good, it is imaginatively cooked and there is a good range from pizza and pasta to gorgeous fish and meat dishes with an Italian flair. The green apple sorbet is to die for. There is a new set menu during the week - worth investigating. Frankie & Benny's (Attercliffe) - Abbey - 12th June 2010

Really nice food! The chicken was slightly overdone but the pizza was so tasty. The service was OK and the food was good value for money. Portion sizes were a little on the small side. However, it was thoroughly enjoyable and a good night out. Strongly recommend trying anything with brownies in for dessert. Almas Indian Brassiere (Dore) - Tom Colton - 10th June 2010

Had around a dozen meals at Almas over a 2-year period and can honestly say this is by far the best Indian restaurant in Sheffield, and I've been to most of them! The latest episode at this quality establishment occurred a couple of weeks ago. To start with the service is fantastic, you are never left waiting for things or embarrassed to get the waiter's attention. It really is top notch attentive service and the food always arrives promptly. The food itself is great, the tandoori selection is majestic to say the least. Really fresh prawns or superbly marinated chicken. They also cater for vegetarians and do interesting dishes using mussels and ingredients not usually found on an Indian restaurant menu. You are constantly left with a dilemma over what to order, as all the dishes I've tasted are equally as exquisite. The decor itself is understated, yet chic and cosy. White linen and uplighting adding to the fine dining, yet comfortable, ambience. In addition, its size lends itself to intimacy, rather than the cattle market feel of other restaurants. Prices are on the higher side of what you would pay at an average Indian restaurant. But make no mistake this restaurant is worth it! And you always leave feeling you have got value for money. I would highly recommend anyone who has not sampled the delights of this top place to do so immediately. Perfect for taking a date or even as a family thing, Almas gets 5 stars every time! I went there this week and I was not very impressed with the service or food. The pizzas were tiny, they didn't fit the small plate they were on, I thought they were kids' portions. Although the prices aren't too high, you definitely do not get what you pay for. The bacon and chicken salad wasn't much better; chunks of overcooked chicken with little flavouring at all. I have lived in Sheffield a few years, and thought I was missing out by not visiting this restaurant, this is the opposite of the case, I would never go back. Ask Pizza & Pasta (City Centre) - James Burkinshaw - 7th June 2010

Went to Ask at the weekend, the service was good and so was the food. The problems started after the meal. My daughter likes to do her number twos in private (she's 2 years old) so she went under the table to do the deed in her nappy. After a minute or so we checked on her and found a mass of chewing gum on the underside of the table. I couldn't find any changing facilities for my daughter so I changed her in the men's toilets, where the chef left a cubicle and didn't wash his hands, just went straight out, followed by a waiter using the urinal and not washing his hands, either. I was told by the manager that the chef has his own washing facilities - the sink in the open kitchen! And we only have his word for that. Don't think I will be going back. I went for my 21st birthday and I loved every bit of it. They had decorated the hall for me and arranged a buffet system for me. The cost was around £15 per head The staff and the management team were very professional and polite. I will be returning to this restaurant on a regular basis and I would recommend everyone to come and taste their food. Dosanj (City Centre) - Matthew Bell - 30th May 2010

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.) Avoid this place like the plague. We arrived at 8:30PM on a Saturday evening only to be told that the restaurant was fully booked, even though it was less than half full and no one was eating. We went elsewhere returned less than 1 hour later. The restaurant was now less than a quarter full and still no one eating. When we asked where everyone was we were told they had all arrived, eaten and gone. This would have been difficult given only 2 waitresses and 3 chefs. They obviously are not interested in anyone's business La Tasca (Hunters Bar) - Steve Hodgson - 26th May 2010
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)
A very disappointing experience. The food was lacking flavour and drenched in oil. When I specifically asked the waitress if we could have one set menu and order from the other, I was told that was fine - until the bill came and this changed and I was told I had to pay for two. If you want a good tapas go to El Toro in Broomhill - this is excellent and also good value for money. El Paso (City Centre) - Keef Wright - 23rd May 2010

All the food was excellent. They made one mistake with the food but quickly rectified it. The music was a little loud but soon got used to it with a couple of Peronis in me. 3 starters and mains came to £57. It doesn't look much from the outside, but is very nice inside, and the food is what it's about for me. Everest Restaurant (Heeley) - Rachel - 20th May 2010

I went to Everest the other night with a friend of mine. I had not been for some time. The place looked bright and fresh and the staff where as friendly as I remembered. We had papadoms and the pickle tray to start whilst we took our time deciding what to have. I can't remember the name of the dish I had, it was lamb not too hot and very, very tasty. My friend had a chicken dish, which she loved. We both had a couple of Indian lagers. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff and the food. We will be going again really soon. Mama's & Leonie's (City Centre) - Julie Revill - 17th May 2010

We ate at Mama's & Leonies on 14/05/2010, what a big mistake. The chicken tikka was dry and burnt, the jacket potato looked as though it had been cooked sometime the week before, as it was a light brown in the middle, not white as it should have been. Also there was too much salad on plates, so as not to have to add more chips I take it. The blonde waitress had no idea how to serve food correctly, passing it in front of my eating companion from my right. She was aggressive when she spoke to us. We were hounded to order even though the restaurant was not busy. When we did complain about the food, nothing was resolved, as we were told we should have said earlier. No money was knocked off at all. The chefs in the kitchen were scary looking, too. And definitely not Italian at all, if anyone was. The meal was very expensive as well, not a bargain enjoyable meal. The seats were uncomfortable chairs that were nearly as old as me, at 51. They moved about and we thought they would collapse at one point. Don 't go there its awful, honest! Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - John Fazman - 7th May 2010

Went there the other night with high expectations and to be honest I was disappointed. I thought the food was expensive for what it was and despite the remarks about everything being home cooked food I was left questioning that. I had the squid to start and was left in little doubt that this had been prepared for some time. The venison steak was just OK and the portion of vegetables that the 4 of us had to share was neither adequate nor did it look as though the kitchen could be bothered. Whilst the staff were very friendly the place itself has a worn outdated feel to it (the table cloth had holes in it and the jug of water presented did not look to have been cleaned properly). The menus need updating and the place could without doubt do with an overhaul. Whilst they may have a few loyal clientele this place needs a Gordon Ramsay-style makeover. So I am afraid I will not be returning.
Otto Damahi (owner) responded on 17th May 2010:
I co-own the Mediterranean and wish to respond to our latest review. The squid is cooked to order. I'm sorry you failed to realise that. The venison steak is the best lean cut from Round Green venison farm in Penistone. You can verify this very easily should you wish to do so. Noone has ever described it as merely OK. As for the vegetables you could have simply let us know that you wanted more and we would have obliged. They are included in the price unlike some other restaurants. What exactly did you mean by the kitchen could not be bothered? Your comment was unclear. We serve all our main courses with different garnishes as well as side vegetables which are dauphinoise potatoes, courgettes and carrots. Our decor is not shiny and new and never has been. Our customers come to us time and again because they appreciate our character and the atmosphere. We are primarily a fish restaurant and we offer a choice of over twelve kinds of fish, all of them prepared and cooked differently. For example, our fillet of turbot baked in the oven and served on a bed of mashed potatoes with a saffron and lemon beurre blanc and garnished with king prawns and mussels is one of the best sellers at the moment so what did you mean by our menus needed updating? The Mediterranean Restaurant is run by professional chefs and owners with over 27 years experience in the hospitality industry and we are confident of the cleanliness, hygiene and quality of our product. (See Scores on the Doors). We don't need Gordon Ramsay as you suggested. I just find it a shame that you never mentioned anything at the time. Customers have a responsibility to let any restaurant know what they require. Some of the points you mention could have very quickly been addressed had you chosen to mention them to the staff. Posting a negative review instead is hardly fair or helpful. I am sure other restaurant owners would agree, even Gordon Ramsay himself. Came to Platillos bar at the weekend, which was my first time in Sheffield for many years. Splendid meal, great surroundings, good friendly service. Try the strawberry fruit beer! More reviews:
