Went to El Paso for my 30th birthday after reading the review on this page and can say that we truly had a great time and the party seemed to never end. We will definitely be going back. The upstairs disco makes up the rest of the night, as there was no need for us to go anywhere else. Service was always with a smile.
San Remo (City Centre) - Don Francis 8/7/2003
It all started well, the owner welcomed us in and hopes were high - a great start to my birthday dinner. We ordered our drinks, which arrive promptly, albeit a little warm. The garlic bread arrived, it was greasy though, but I thought I wouldn't worry. That was until my main course arrived. I asked for onions not to be included (I'm very allergic) and it was covered in them. The waiter took it away and brought me back a piece of chicken with what can only be described as tomato water on top with a few slivers of mushroom. I was actually meant to have 'chicken in a creamy tomato sauce, with ham, cheese, and mushrooms', I complained and was told that it had all been scraped off (it was never there in he first place), and I was offered a free drink to compensate. On top of all this my partner's steak, which was meant to be fillet, had been bashed to thickness of a piece of paper. In short, DON'T GO! Julio's Restaurante Pizzeria (Oughtibridge) - Valerie 2/7/2003
Food is great, cosy place, and not to forget - cute waiters!
La Terrazza (Sharrow) - Ian 2/5/2003
Excellent for pasta and steak. You can bring your own if you want (there's a small corkage charge) but the wine list is also decent and fair priced.
K Pasa (City Centre) - Ian 2/5/2003
I would have liked to have reviewed the food here, but after waiting 30 minutes to be served (no menu, no drinks) and then being told we could not have a mix of starters instead of main courses we left. When I asked where else we could go we were told to try McDonald's.
Mediterranean (Sharrow) - Sarah Clothier 6/2/2003
It is hardly surprising that the Mediterranean is the restaurant of choice of the Home Secretary when he is in town - the food is consistently fresh, expertly prepared and unfailingly delicious. The atmosphere of the Mediterranean is as dependable as the great service and conviviality. I have enjoyed romantic dinners with my partner there, a meal with friends and family celebrations - all of which have been made memorable by the proprietor's great sense of style and occasion. I couldn't recommend the Mediterranean highly enough, it is without doubt the region's finest restaurant - but be warned, once you visit you'll be hooked! El Paso (City Centre) - Sally Thompson 1/1/2003
What a atmosphere! I went here for my 21st and had a truly great time. Great food and great sevice. The Mexican specials are highy recommended. After the meal, we went upstairs to the private function room and danced salsa untill early morning. The waiters even took time out to teach us how to dance. There were 30 of us and we all thought this was one of the best restaurants we had been to. Not one complaint from anyone. Highly reccommended for parties that want to have a wild time. Cafe Rouge (Ecclesall) - Anonymous 1/1/2003
Good restaurant, nice food. Most food is French and there's not much choice for children under 11, though there is a kids menu. The food is made from fresh so your meal will be ready in 15-30 minutes. The restaurant sells hot drinks, a selection of wines and beers and chilled cold drinks. The atmosphere is good and you can stay for hours just chatting, eating & drinking. The restaurant is recommended, the service brilliant. La Vida Loca (Hillsborough) - Kay Taylor 1/1/2003
Friendly family atmosphere with very good service and excellent food. Great value and excellent surroundings.
Taste (Hunters Bar) - Nus 1/1/2003
I have been to this trendy litte breakfast/lunch place on Ecclesall Road a couple of times and have been very impressed by the surroundings, atmosphere, service and food. The decor is modern and minimalistic with bench seating downstairs and tables upstairs. With use of calming colours one immediately feels relaxed and able to leisurely eat, sip coffee, read the paper whilst watching the world go by. For lunch there are various options including delicious toasted sandwiches and salads. Recently, my wife and I had a tasty 'Royale' breakfast of scrambled egg, smoked salmon on muffin which was imaginitively presented. It was complemented by a lovely guava and strawberry smoothie. In short, I would recommend you give this joint a try. Cubana (City Centre) - Stuart H 1/1/2003
Norman Douglas once asked "All culinary tasks should be performed with reverential love, don't you think so?", and in doing so he set a standard by which all restaurants should be judged. But then in Sheffield it's different. This season's chain with this season's menu and this season's food fad, topped and a garnish of we should be grateful just to be there. Restaurants immediately start with a one point advantage simply because any food cooked by someone else tastes better than having cooked it yourself (sample free-range eggs and skinny fries at HA HA). They get another point because they invariably ensure the diner has indulged in at least one taste bud deadening glass of house wine before the food arrives and the third point comes from our refusal to accept that there is anything other than an artist in the kitchen who honestly cares about the food that leaves his atelier. And then, quite innocently while abroad, we sample honest well flavoured victuals prepared with enthusiasm and care and we realise that dining out isn't a stressful, rushed, pot luck affair but a simply joy. And we come home and search for the same. "Good food for everybody!" he trumpeted, and how we wished he cooked for us. Enter without preconceptions, without the tapas encyclopaedia to question authenticity, without a back complaint due to the upright chairs and without an alarm call set for first thing the next morning and at Cubana you will find people and food that have no hidden agenda, just a desire to please and a welcome that will make you believe you must have been there before. That's as far as my expectations extend when dining in Sheffield, and Cubana excels. I almost forget what I ate simply because I enjoyed the atmosphere, company and music - not to mention the smile of the waitress who brought our food, who had an honest expression on her face when she asked "is everything okay". Had I not fallen instantly in love with the husky Spanish accent and the casual demeanour I felt I could have told her if it wasn't and she would have somehow made amends. I didn't need to though. And I'm not going to tell you about the food. Try it for yourself and see if you remember the next morning. Piccolos (City Centre) - Denzil Watson 1/1/2003
Piccolos is a real gem of a restaurant. We went there for a meal the other night and the staff were friendly and helpful and the food great. They do the best garlic bread I've ever tried. For mains I had the excellent chef's special picante penne and my wife had one of the best shanks of lamb she's tasted. Hence a big thumbs up to Piccolos!
Julio's Restaurante Pizzeria (Oughtibridge) - Anne Robertson 1/1/2003
It was with curiosity that I entered Julio's Restaurante Pizzeria, having left it's predecessor vowing never to go back. It is with the opposite sentiment that I left on this visit. While the menu is not as extensive as its city-centre counter-parts, it still offers something for everyone. I started with Bruschetta, which, while not the most complex of dishes, had a lovely balance of flavours and wasn't overladen with basil as is sometimes the case. The king prawns main dish was a wonder to behold, the prawns being at least 4" long when whole. They tasted as though recently caught (I know this isn't the case) and the garlic sauce complemented rather than overwhelmed them. The wine list is reasonably priced with a good variety. The service is exemplary (although I have heard it described by others as mediocre) and friendly wihout being too familiar. The owner was attentive (his previous experience includes the Flying Pizza and K Pasa in the City Centre) and has good plans for the downstairs area of the restaurant. A very pleasant dining experience. It is essential to book at weekends as word has travelled rapidly! Mediterranean (Sharrow) - Tom Curnes 1/1/2003
The food I had was perfect. I think that it was good value for money and the service was excellent. I orderd Halibut fish and could taste the freshness still inside. This restaurant would have to be the best in Sheffield because of the wide range of choices it provides of fish.
Mediterranean (Sharrow) - Emma Farmer 1/1/2003
I have visited this restaurant three times and each time I have thought the food absolutely delicious. The most striking thing about the food is its freshness and the flavours really come out owing to the attention to detail of the chef. Finally the ambiance of the restaurant is such that you feel relaxed and comfortable. The proprietor is one of the most welcoming men I have ever met. Give it a try!
