El Paso (City Centre) - Jane Spencer - 26th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

My friends took me here for my birthday party after reading several good reviews and it was really good! We all had a great time. The food tasted authentic, as were the cocktails. Definitely worth a visit. I actually thought it was good value for money as well.

They also embarrassed me greatly after the meal with a birthday song and I had to drink a flaming sambuca. We had a disco in the function room afterwards.

We will be back again.

Vito's Italian Restaurant (Walkley) - Robert Collier - 24th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I am a retired Director of a Swiss based multi-national. I have eaten at all of the world's top restaurants, however Vito's took my breath away.

The un-assuming exterior hid a gastronomic delight. The staff were so friendly that I felt as if I was saying good-bye to good friend when I left! I started with the Antipasta, which was excellent & sufficient for me to share with my wife and son. I followed this with a sliced fillet steak (au rucola), a traditional Italian dish served with rocket salad and grated parmesan, with vegetables to complement (superb).

The wine list was exceptional (check the last page) and the wine was amongst the best I have ever sampled. The desserts were, according to my family, heavenly. And the bill was very reasonable. It was my son's graduation dinner (his choice) and absolutely amongst the best meals my family and I have ever had. Why is it not more famous? A truly hidden jewel.

Seasons Bistro (Sharrow) - Tony Plant - 22nd July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Date of visit Thursday 17 July.

Our party of four had a wonderful evening in pleasant surroundings with exceptional food and service.

The warm bread, olives and dressing were a delicious prelude to the following courses. The seafood parcel starter was crisp and flavoursome, the sea bass main was cooked to perfection with a plentiful supply of seasonal vegetables.

Profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce and a white chocolate and raspberry brule were shared between four as our appetites were already more than satisfied.

The house white complimented the delicate flavours and with coffee to round of the evening I was amazed to receive a bill for less than £90. Seasons is a restaurant that I will return to very soon, congratulations to the staff and owners for a marvellous dining experience.

UK Mama African Restaurant (Broomhill) - Janine Chapman - 22nd July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I could not agree more with Alex Davis. This is the worst 'restaurant' I've ever been to in my life. The entire experience was a complete shambles from start to finish.

I went with a party of 6 quite a while ago. We were the only ones in the restaurant (unsurprising, as it turned out) yet we waited over an hour for our meals. When the food finally arrived the two vegetarians among us were presented with a plate of lumpy meat in gravy that could easily have been mistaken for a can of Pedigree Chum. Incredibly, the breathtakingly incompetent waiter insisted we had ordered it and we had to argue to get them replaced!

In short, everyone in the party thought the meals were disgusting, the service was hideous and the place was dirty. I would not go back to this restaurant if they paid me and to be frank I can't believe they have managed to stay in business. Keep well away!

Sakushi (City Centre) - Trudi Gehring - 15th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I went to Sakushi on Saturday night with 5 friends, keen to try out the new sushi bar on Campo Lane. It has a conveyor belt but I had heard correctly that they also took orders so that we could share hot noodles alongside the little plates of fishy nibbles.

We had some delightful sashimi, outstanding udon noodles, astonishingly good tofu (I usually hate the stuff but number 55 is amazing and was recommended by our knowledgeable and enthusiastic waiter) and some unfortunately average makis. The plates are colour coded and priced individually and we got through about 40 of them.

Including two deserts, several beers, some saki and a perfectly acceptable bottle of house white our total bill was approximately £30 per head. Considering the amount and variety we had eaten we thought that was very reasonable.

It was, however, almost entirely empty - please visit this lovely little restaurant, it would be such a shame for it to close down!

Zeenat (Attercliffe) - Caroline Taylor - 13th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I've been to this restaurant a few times now and I've got to say it's the best Indian restaurant I've been to. The food is lovely, the service is great, and the staff are really friendly.

I've been with the girls on nights out and had a really good time and I've also been a few times with my partner and find it a really nice setting for a romantic meal. The atmosphere is great, and since they have refurbished it it's even nicer than before! The new tables are wide enough to give you plenty of room instead of feeling all huddled together, the way its all set out gives you a feeling of privacy.

I also like the way the bar area is separate and you can sit comfortably and enjoy your drink. I try and have different dishes when I go and I haven't tried anything that I haven't enjoyed and found really tasty!

The buffet on a Monday is fab, it gives you the chance to try different dishes. I really recommend you try it!

Mill House (Drakehouse) - Ken Moody - 12th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

The salmon and herb fish cakes were super, the apple pie great, custard, hot and runny, yum yum!

Pepsi for the wife and a pint for me £12. You cannot beat that surely.

The pub is a lot better without the play area and it shows by the amount of people there.

Felicini (Hunters Bar) - Robert Savage - 12th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Visited on 9th July 2008 and found the food good but somewhat expensive.

Interesting modern surroundings and busy which I never find a good excuse for slow service!

Ordered a steak and was charged £3 extra for the chips although some items came with the chips i.e. moules.

However, the crunch came when the bill included 55p for the mustard! Half a spoon maybe. Chips were poor, mainly skins not much potato. I spent over £50 so did not leave a tip because of slow service and I thought the charge for the chips and mustard more than compensated.

Long time before I visit again.

El Paso (City Centre) - Sarah Broomfield - 4th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

What a great find!

My boyfriend and I were really looking forward to going to this place, as when we'd passed by it previously, it looked like a fun place with good food.

The starter nachos was a good way to kick-off, and I'd suggest that one portion is definitely enough for two. The main course was highly exceptional, a real treat. The chicken fajitas were the best I've ever tasted. The tender chicken was accompanied by fantastic sizzling onions and peppers and delicious guacamole, salsa, chopped vegetables and bean sauce. My advice is to include a little bit of everything in your fajita bread. My partner chose chimichanga and we both remarked at the excellent quality. The quantity is ideal.

I recommend you go in starving and you'll stand a good chance of finishing!

There was a disco on upstairs but as there were only two of us so we gave it a miss.

Robin Hood (Millhouses) - Gill Williams - 4th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Although I wasn't expecting excellence at this pub / restaurant I certainly didn't expect the quality to be as poor as it was. The food was awful, I ordered the ciabatta with cheese garlic bread - it arrived black, the waiter who bought it over could visibly see it was totally black and burnt, but still served it.

I had the steak, which was average but the chips where cold and soggy. My husband's cottage pie was awful, like a puree baby food and the potato was obviously powdered. It left us feeling very nauseas and we didn't stay for desert!

Acorn Inn (Chapeltown) - Tony Plant - 30th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

The Acorn Inn is part of Greene King chain and uses their main menu, but is one of the best I have visited.

There is normal pub environment and a large conservatory, which is very nice on a summer evening.

The menu is varied with a wide choice at very good prices and there is also a specials menu.

The quantity and quality of the food was very good and the service quick and efficient by the speedy staff. Five adults dined out and had two courses each including drinks for £58. Excellent value and I will be calling again.

Walnut Club (Hathersage) - A Moran - 29th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Booked at the Walnut Club for a meal for a party of 7 for our golden wedding anniversary expecting it to be a lovely experience. The service and food were very disappointing. We complained but the manager was very defensive. We will never go back.

Cricket Inn (Totley) - Tony Plant - 17th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Read good reviews but a very disappointing experience.

Pub split in two parts, one part with large central table and smaller perimeter table - great if you like noisy, badly behaved kids as part of your dining experience. The other side full of cramped tables and fast paced waiters.

Sheffield fish cake starter served on a big square plate, which is fine if the tables are sized to accommodate them. For a lesson in fish cakes try my local chippy, it's not hard to deep fry 2 potato slices in batter with a fish filling and get the fish moist but cooked and the potato fluffy and cooked.

Steak and kidney pie served on a chopping board with a pot of mushy peas and 3 very crispy roast potatoes. Steak was a fatty, kidney absent and crust overdone. Gravy very nice.

Towards the end of the meal the pub and adjacent tables were overrun with guys who had been out running on the moor. I don't like sharing elbow personal space with loud, sweaty types in tracksuits and shorts.

If you like the idea of average pub grub at premium prices in a room full of ill behaved brats and noisy sweaty "athletes" then this is the place for you.

El Paso (City Centre) - Melanie Burns - 15th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I went to El Paso for the first time for my 30th birthday after being told about it by my workmates and had a great night out.

The food and service was great and the food tasted beautiful. We really enjoyed our meal and then we went upstairs into the function room for the disco.

The music was a mix of Spanish/English and everyone enjoyed it. All my friends were amazed with the level of service provided and all said they will be going back.

La Romantica (Heeley) - Sarah Knowles - 13th June 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have been here on numerous occasions with different people and I love it!

It's great value, the portions are generous and the food is well cooked.

The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

Don't come here if you're looking for fine wines and pan-fried scallops, but if you want a good honest meal for not much money this is the place!

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Well what a shame! This great restaurant has partly changed hands and has recently been re-decorated. Formerly it had superb customer service and the food was always fantastic. Service was a little slow but it was always well worth the wait.

Since the change over, things have really deteriorated. The menu is more run-of-the-mill, the decor, though smart is now coarse and a mish-mash of themes, but it's the service!

Oh my God, having been asked about the alterations and said I didn't like them, I was then harangued on the steps by the new owner about my comments. He has no wish to listen to the customers' views and was frankly rude.

You now go there at your peril!

Platillos Bar & Restaurant (City Centre) - Tamlin McPherson - 29th May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I would like for you to understand a first experience at your bar, and the consequence your staff has had upon it.

To give you some perspective, it is said that for every good review, a person will tell four people. For every bad there will be thirty they will tell, I'm sorry to say, you picked the wrong person to give a bad impression to.

We turned up, admittedly, deliberately, unannounced at your bar, upon questioning the bar staff they didn't know how to handle wine, to which Brett (one of your staff) advised me that the white was refrigerated (too cold) and the red had been left on the bar side for about a week (and as such submitted to varying temperatures night after night, ruining any quality in the wine), we were told later (by someone else) it was left there only a day - consistency please?

Further to this, we we're told we were being served this in "Spanish" wine glasses, please, if there were such a thing, a simple search would find them. I use ISO wine glasses for tasting, as I am part of a few wine clubs, and no not believe there to be "Spanish" glasses.

So lets talk about the food, which came quickly originally, and as far as vegetarian food was concerned was ok, but charging £8 for a small (and it was) cold meat salad? Do you regard this to be value for your food?

Then later when my friends arrive you tell me that we can no longer order food downstairs because of how busy you are in the restaurant upstairs and we can't be seated upstairs at all tonight, even though I spoke to your people at 08:45 this morning (Wednesday 29th May 2008) and he advised I wouldn't need to book. This is some kind of joke surely?

The worst thing of all of this, is that upon leaving disappointed, I tried to provide feedback to your bar staff member "Brett", I advised him it was the first time myself and my friends had attended and our experience had been a poor one, given the reasons cited above, his response was that he threw his hands in the air and said "I've only two hands mate", it didn't occur to him to raise this complaint to someone capable of registering it, with a view to improving service in future? My god, are we still living in that backward a culture?

I will rate this very poorly, overpriced, badly kept wine (for a wine bar) and unable to cater for people when they come.

2 / 10

Wortley Arms (Wortley) - Jackie Wilkinson - 25th May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Went for a pub lunch at the Wortley Arms recently and two of the things we wanted weren't available that day. We finished up having less than average gammon steaks, which were very overpriced, especially as we were in the pub and not the restaurant.

The waitress was very pleasant and that was the only thing about the experience that was. Definitely won't be eating there again.

Vito's Italian Restaurant (Walkley) - Tamlin McPherson - 23rd May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Once more we stepped in to the welcoming surroundings of Vito's to be greeted by Alfredo, the head waiter, who offered us a seat in the foyer while he took our drinks order at the bar and we sat relaxing while we considered our options for food.

As vegetarians we had a great selection to choose from. There is, as always, an exceptional variety of truly traditional vegetarian food, as well as a great variety of meat dishes for you carnivores out there.

For those of you who pay any attention, you may have noticed that my wife and I have reviewed several Italian restaurants, including La Scala in Millhouses, and Nonna's, both good, but simply don't match up to the brilliance of Vito's and his wine collection.

What does it for me is a combination of things. The food is always exceptional; the service from Alfredo et al is by far and away the best in Sheffield, not pushy, but attentive, and knowledgeable - so few places have staff that know about their food and wine!

But let me tell you about the wine - which rivals the Old Vicarage for quality, and betters it in Italian style by a long way! I get wine from a wine broker - I collect and taste vintage wines, and let me tell you, I don't know where he is getting his selections from, but his fine wine list is without compare in Sheffield, and quite possibly in the north of England. To add to this, Vito has assured me he is expanding his selection soon to include some truly glorious northern Italian dessert wines, which are hard to find and really worth seeking out to taste (try them with the home made tiramisu or zabaglione (zabaione), you'll know exactly what I mean!).

If you do nothing else this year, make time to go to Vito's, one of the last truly Italian restaurants in Sheffield.

Walnut Club (Hathersage) - Linda Room - 18th May 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We took two friends here for a special night out. The food was really great, the service very good, and all the staff were extremely attentive and friendly.

I don't know when the previous reviewer visited the restaurant, but our experience was completely different to theirs. In fact, the staff were so friendly and accommodating, they gave us a lift to and from the restaurant!

We were staying in a hotel in Bamford and couldn't get a taxi at all for some reason. We rang the restaurant and spoke to a chap called Jake, who, on hearing of our dilemma, said we weren't to worry, he'd send someone to pick us up, we were to enjoy the evening, and when we were ready to go, he'd get someone to drive us back. On top of excellent food, we got this kind of service! Please don't take too much notice of the other review - you'll have a great time at the Walnut Club.
