Walnut Club Champagne Bar & Grill (Hunters Bar) - Amy and Julie - 28th September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We had high expectations of Walnut Club Champagne Bar & Grill.

The decor was nice but the atmosphere was spoilt by loud music and drunken customers shouting near our table.

The food was delicious when it arrived, we tried the duck, paella, venison and beef burger.

Unfortunately the service left a lot to be desired. They were slow with the drinks, they were unfamiliar with the menu and availability of specials like the chateaubriand. The waitress cleared plates when we were still eating off them! Watch out for extra drinks that you didn't receive charged to your bill!

Advice: OK for oysters slammers and drinks but dine elsewhere.

Aagrah (City Centre) - Trudi Gehring - 20th September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I couldn't disagree more with the other reviews I have just read.

On Thursday I went to Aagrah with my dad for an impromptu dinner. We were immediately seated, served quickly and charmingly by a knowledgeable waiter.

The poppadoms were nothing special but arrived very quickly.

To start I had lamb chops which were very strongly spiced but done so with real finesse, the flavours developed and the lamb was not overpowered. Dad really enjoyed his soup, too.

For main I had ordered a sea bass fillet from the seafood special list and to my delight it was actually 2 whole fillets - delicious and light, as it was served with grilled vegetables and salad as well as rice. It's so unusual to go out for Indian food and to not me over-faced by the rich and heavy meal you get. My father had a lamb and Okra bhuna, which he polished off with relish.

With 2 bottles of King Cobra the bill was around £40. We will definitely be going back again.

Aagrah (City Centre) - Jayne Turner - 16th September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Disappointing for a centrally located Indian restaurant. We ordered 6 different dishes and they all tasted the same - with so much chilli pepper that instead of variation in the spices, as the menu promised, all we could taste was the peppery heat.

Decor good, service OK, but very noisy. We won't be going back.

Aagrah (City Centre) - Gary Waller - 16th September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Really, really bad - again! Just don't bother!

Why oh why did I go back here?

Yet another evening of awful service. I'd like to comment on the food, but mine did not arrive. I'd like to say that this is unusual, but I think it's happened to one of us every time we have ended up here, (it's a mainstay for work do's), I cannot remember a time that the food has actually turned up correct.

Last time I was here (last week), at least food turned up. OK, so it wasn't the food we ordered, even though the waiter tried his best to lie to us (although a little wasted after already telling us that two of the dishes were different... one of which was supposed to be lamb, that turned up chicken... have you ever tasted lamb that looked and tasted like chicken?).

This place is awful. Spend your money elsewhere.

El Paso (City Centre) - Samantha Burgess - 10th September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

This was our first visit to El Paso and it won't be our last. There were so many interesting things on the menu that we want to return soon so that we can try more of them.

The menu was very extensive and exciting. Everything is authentic and they even make their own dough for the garlic bread. The staff were very friendly, polite and professional and made us feel very welcome. The food was gorgeous and I would definitely recommend this restaurant. There was a disco in the function room for everyone after their meal.

Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, entertaining menu! No bad points.

Dore Moor Inn (Dore) - Helen Jinks - 9th September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I recently visited the Door Moor Inn on a quiet Sunday lunchtime. There was only one member of staff on at the bar who took an absolute age to serve the customer in front of us. After waiting at least 10 minutes, with no eye contact or apologies, we ordered drinks, there was very little choice of red wines. The food was nothing special, I asked about the fish specials and was told that it was fish and chips. The service and customer care at the Door Moor leaves much to be desired.

Crosspool Tavern (Crosspool) - Janey W - 4th September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Called for Sunday lunch carvery to find no longer had Sky TV

Worse still, they took our cash (which somehow is unjustifiably £3 more on Sunday than the rest of the week for the same thing) at the bar, only to be told when in the carvery queue that the beef was off and would not be ready for at least an hour.

The turkey was dry and the remaining ham was scraggy ends that I wouldn't have put on any plate. All the vegetables, the peas, carrots and cauliflower cheese were of the frozen variety, plus the roast potatoes were hard in the middle and the Yorkshire puddings were soggy

Bonus - the cranberry was delightful and the barman very good. It's a pity the same can't be said for the miserable, sour-faced chef carving the little bit of meat he had at 3PM on a Sunday afternoon.

Oh what a downfall in the place.

Gusto Italiano (City Centre) - Danny - 3rd September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Despite the fact the food looked fantastic, I think the service and manners of the Italian lady who runs the place leaves much to be desired. On both of the two occasions that I have visited this Italian I have had a very poor experience.

The first time I was looking for a quick bite. I love Italian food so unwittingly I walked into the restaurant with a Starbucks coffee in my hand. My brother was ordering and I tried my best not to have the cup on show as I had seen the place served coffee. The lady owner came directly over to me and told me "not to bring this cup into her restaurant again". I was visually embarrassed, which led to me getting up to leave before my brother had received his order. She blocked the doorway so she could have her say with me on the way out as well, to which I responded that she had just alienated a paying customer. My brother took this all as her having a joke, so on his advice we went to the same place a month later.

The Italian lady was serving and instantly recognised me. She came over and removed the food that I had pointed at from the hot counter and put it in the back. When I came to order she said that she had none of the food that I was after and offered an alternative to which I said that would be fine. Her manner and attitude was that of someone trying to be awkward. When I got to the till to pay for the food she came to the till girl and told her that only 1 portion of lasagne was available (which my brother had asked for).

I had waited in a queue and discussed my order, and had given this place a second chance after they had embarrassed me the first time. I understand that this is an Italian food establishment, however they should be aware that British customers expect manners, or they do what I did today and went to eat somewhere else. She has done a great job of faking it for reviewers here and for the award they have on show in the restaurant, in my opinion. If you cant have some manners for your customers then they will turn on you and spread the word about how you treat people (i.e. 1 happy customer may tell 1 friend, an unhappy customer will tell at least 10). If you don't care about people's attitude when your giving them money then this is the place for you, however if you like polite service and a bit of respect go to somewhere that has customer service standards like Starbucks or Pizza Hut.

Walnut Club Champagne Bar & Grill (Hunters Bar) - Shirley Brumpton - 1st September 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Visited for a friend's birthday celebration dinner

Drinks were great - champagne cocktails, Mohitos etc... Menu looked good, I had read the menu both on the internet and whilst having drinks. I selected scallops as a first choice starter and crab cakes as a second choice starter. Four of our party chose chateaubriande (the chef's special, by the way) as a main course and one chose fillet steak. We were finally told "Oh sorry, we don't have any scallops, crab cakes, chateaubriande or fillet because we were really busy yesterday, Saturday night is our main night, you see". Excuse me but were we paying less for Sunday night? Er... no!

Sensing the awkwardness the waitress babbled on about it "being quiet on a Sunday night", and, being the Queen of Caustic, I suggested that she didn't pursue that logic as it sounded weak and that, perhaps, if they couldn't deliver on a Sunday perhaps they would be better to close on a Sunday rather than relieve us of our hard-earned cash whilst offering only half a menu.

Oh, they then found some chateaubriande after "asking chef" (hadn't they asked him before?) and at that point mentioned that they take 40 minutes to cook - "I hope that's alright, he's just put them in". Well, hey ho, it will have to be then wont it?

The service left a lot to be desired, glasses not cleared etc... Asked for some hot water for tea and it arrived in a mug - I thought that this place was up market? The service definitely did not live up to the up market, marketing image, which is a real pity because the food was excellent!

Did not complain at the time because I did not wish to put a dampener on the evening (how very British). The moral of the story must be - don't go on a Sunday and, if the service is so poor on a Sunday when it's quiet, I'd be interested to know what happens on a Saturday when people are ordering from a full menu and when they are busy!

Boardwalk (Attercliffe) - Sue Bee - 31st August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Went with friends on Saturday 30th August, restaurant was busy, but not over crowded, table was for 7 and we arrived around 8PM.

Service was as expected from a busy Saturday night, waitresses where polite and delivered good service, however the food was another matter!

Me and my partner shared a fried breaded mushroom starter, portion size was good along the lines of generous, but under cooked, bread coating was soggy, the garlic dip tasted sour rather then garlicy and the centre of the mushrooms did not feel as hot as the coating, this inclines me to believe they were under cooked.

I had the New Yorker chicken dish, it came out last, after I waited 5 minutes to ask waitress where it was. After all the others had had there main meals delivered. When it came though the chicken was hot, it was very dry and the curly fries, seemed to be either under fried or been fried in a batch and left standing for a while, as they to were soggy like the mushroom starter! Not hot as you would expect food to be fresh from a deep fat fryer!

My friend ordered the minted lamb steak, but returned it as it was very tough.

My partner ordered the 12Oz rump, that too was very tough, he is not one to complain! I know this as I had a piece! The steak was thin, though he had ordered it to be medium it came out well done, the steak was too thin to had been cooked anything but well done.

As for the coleslaw portions that came with the dishes to give them the American feel, they came in tiny little paper cups, and were no more than a garnish, as they were about a dessert spoon in size.

I would not recommend this as a place to eat if you enjoy food. Very disappointed and did not want to embarrass our friends, the hosts, that had recommended the restaurant for us to eat at by complaining to the management that night! I do not mind paying for eating out, but for what the restaurant charged for the food they produced was nothing more then preying on the British stiff upper lip in not complaining, in case we seemed rude or ignorant!

Royal Spice (Walkley) - Ruth Cheshire - 31st August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Four of us had a fantastic meal at Royal Spice. We are spoilt by living in the Birmingham Balti belt, where there are plenty of curry houses to choose from.

Royal Spice food was excellent value and all our chosen dishes were very tasty. We tried lamb, chicken and prawns and all lived up to expectations. The waiter even brought us an extra side plate with salad so that we could share a starter.

The atmosphere was pleasant and the service quick and friendly. Our favourite dish was one we had never tried before with a mango flavour- it was delicious.

For us, a useful consideration in choosing a restaurant is whether you can take your own drinks as this keeps the bill down and everyone can take their favourite tipple! This restaurant has the best of both worlds as it has a licensed bar as well.

We can definitely recommend a visit and dining here will be a highlight of our next visit to Sheffield.

Aagrah (City Centre) - John Wells - 30th August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

We booked a table on a Saturday night, but were kept waiting over 40 minutes to be seated. Our food was rushed over within 3 minutes of being sat, whilst many in our group were still eating starters. It was quite clear the food had not been freshly prepared.

The service was poor. The waiters were impatient, and seemed to be congregating around the bar near where we were sat.

Food was extremely average, and not what one would expect from a city centre restaurant, nor for the price!

Save yourself the effort, and go somewhere locally!

Olive Bar & Restaurant (City Centre) - Sally German - 26th August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I've just had my hen night at Olive Bar & Restaurant in Sheffield, and I must say it was fantastic. The service was superb, the food was excellent and the staff were really friendly and helpful. I would recommend this as a location for a classy hen night! The bar area is great too. Good atmosphere all round.

Angel Inn (Holmesfield) - Gary Purseglove - 23rd August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

This review relates to an evening meal we had at the Angel Inn on 22nd August 2008. We arrived at about 6PM, the Angel was practically deserted but although they had reservations we easily found a table. It was our second visit, as we had been impressed the first time we went one lunchtime.

The restaurant is very pleasant. The welcome and service were friendly and food prices about normal for this type of venue. I chose a sirloin steak and my wife the Fisherman's Platter. Portions were of a reasonable size. I'd asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare. When it arrived it was scorched and hard on the outside, while it was still slightly bloody on the inside it could hardly be described as rare. My wife's meal was OK. When the waitress asked how our meal was I told her about the steak and after mentioning it to the chef she offered me a free dessert, which I accepted.

When we paid the price seemed too high for us to have not been charged for the "free" dessert but we were only given a total figure so we have absolutely no way of knowing one way or the other. We paid and left without any comment.

Although we would not have left a tip this time it would have been useful to know if there was a tip bowl or not, it appeared not.

This was a disappointing 2nd visit, which we had been looking forward to for some time.

Bella Napoli (Nether Edge) - Matt Wood - 16th August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

My second dine at the Bella Napoli. Immediately I am confronted with a friendly, warm and cosy environment, albeit a venue on the small side. Not a problem though as I proceed to scan the menu selection. All fairly typical of Italian restaurants in the area. A simple order of 'Special Pizza' and 'Risotto Marinara' accompanied by plain garlic bread, nothing too exotic. The order placed is fairly swift and I note the waitress and hostess is kept busy by the half-dozen tables. Almost immediately a service of black and green olives in light seasoning is placed on the table. A welcome addition although I later realise it's a half-hearted apology for the impending wait.

The garlic bread arrives after some 35 minutes, the pizza and risotto another half an hour later. On my first visit similar service time was observed with a 1 hour 15 minute wait on an evening that wasn't that busy. Herein lies the problem, one waitress and two chefs.

Of course such disappointment can be tempered and overcome by outstanding food. In this case I cannot offer such an enthusiastic recommendation. The garlic bread was rather bland. The pizza had a somewhat doughy taste and was on the 'rare' side. The risotto, for all its promise, had a seafood selection that was prepared akin to a cardinal sin. In short, overcooked and rubbery.

It wasn't that the food was unpleasant but as much effort and heart that is included in this Italian recipe does not make up for the inefficient service time and generally average tastes.

To offer some enlightenment, you can take your own wine and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed. However, to offer a final negative footnote, you cannot pay by card and have to revert to cheque or cash... so last century.

In all, I cannot recommend this restaurant but if you have time to kill and fancy a change then firstly I would indulge in one of the other numerous restaurants in the Nether Edge area. If they are too busy then you may be tempted. After all it isn't bad, just not particular good in any area.

Island Pot (Heeley) - Marsha - 12th August 2008
Please note: this restaurant is no longer trading.

Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

I have ordered Caribbean takeaway in Sheffield numerous times and Island Pot Caribbean takeaway always have hot, fresh and tasty food. The meat is well seasoned and the rice and peas fresh.

The service is quick and efficient and the staff are always pleasant. The shop has a nice atmosphere and is always clean. I would recommend it to anyone in the Sheffield area that would like to taste authentic Caribbean cuisine. My favourite is their spicy jerk chicken, curried goat and rice and peas.

Aagrah (City Centre) - Jason Hurt - 10th August 2008

Very poor service. We waited for over an hour for a table that was booked last night and had to leave with no food.

Cubana (City Centre) - Ian Gilroy - 10th August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Saturday the 9th of August 2008 was the second time I had been to the Tapas restaurant, Cubana. We arrived at about quarter past six and asked for a table for three, which was met with a furrowed brow from our waiter as we did not have a reservation.

Fair enough, I thought as I'd imagine most people would make reservations around the seven o'clock mark. He said would be okay but he would need the table back in an hour. Again, I thought that's fair enough as we would be finished by then and thought no more of it.

We ordered the set menus, which were on an early bird deal until 6:30PM at a reasonable price with a good variety of dishes. The food arrived at a steady pace with plates soon flooding the table, eyes bright like a childhood Christmas morning with Transformers following Scalextrics.

The set menu provided a good mix of dishes as I mentioned consisting of mainly safe bets like the giant meatballs, Chorizo, a nice omelette/frittata and a delicious chicken and sweet potato dish in a creamy white wine sauce. Personally, I would have liked to have seen some more seafood as we only had the prawns in the filo pastry but that's the set menu I suppose.

We drank San Miguel on draught with a good amount of bread and tapenade to accompany the meal to give your taste buds natural breaks between each little meal. Towards the end of the feast, we noticed our Patatas Bravas had not arrived. We chased these up with the waitress and received them promptly.

Feeling full but not overly so, (a great achievement considering the amount of food consumed) we decided against a desert and asked for the bill. Finishing our drinks, I wondered how we were doing time wise with the gentleman wanting his table back. The waitress collected our payment and we sat waiting for our change to arrive.

We sat and waited for around ten minutes. During this time, the gentleman who showed us to our table buzzed around frequently, shouting across us to the waitress in Spanish and gesticulating, not in the most subtle way possible, at our table.

After this happened a few times, we felt quite uncomfortable and told the gentleman that actually, we were waiting on them for our change. The waitress half apologised for the "mix-up", coming back quickly with our change which must have been sat around doing nothing.

This was at a time when the restaurant was about 3/4 full with quite a few people like ourselves about ready to leave, not exactly peak time. We quickly debated about a tip when I let my manners get the better of me and left 10%, which on reflection I probably regret.

On the whole, great food with a good menu but a few things that would be pretty easy for the restaurant (i.e. service issues/good manners) to sort out quite soured the experience for me, which is a real shame. I'd probably think twice about going again as there is a lot of choice for Tapas places.

Seasons Bistro (Sharrow) - Moira Brimacombe - 5th August 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Excellent food, a pleasant relaxed atmosphere with music that doesn't intrude, and prices that are reasonable. Highly recommended.

Zeenat (Attercliffe) - Kashaf Hussain - 29th July 2008
Rating: (Not rated - review added before star ratings introduced.)

Had a great meal at Zeenat last weekend. The staff were excellent, finding a large party a table with short notice.

The place looks amazing. The colour scheme and the lighting really set the mood.

We had a variety of dishes, including English dishes and every one agreed the food was superb. I had mine done apna style (traditional) and could not fault it. One of the waters mentioned that they will have more apna style dishes on their new menu. Can't wait!
