Restaurant name:

Old Vicarage Restaurant (Ridgeway) - Tim Astwood - 30th May 2011
Rating:

We were very disappointed by the service and quality of food on our first visit to a Michelin-starred restaurant. We found the length of wait to be seated (55 minutes) and between courses (30-45 minutes) far too long. The service was poor and the waiters were very disorganised.

The food was not to the level we expected (the pasta chewy, flavours clashing and overpowering dishes). It is safe to say we will not be returning to here.

Mediterranean (Hunters Bar) - Barbara Wood - 29th May 2011
Rating:

We looked at the reviews before we went last night (28th May 2011) and were sceptical about going.

We were a party of eight. Eight starters, eight main courses, two cheese boards, one tart tatin, three coffees (one liqueur), six bottles of wine and two bottles of water came to £292 in total.

For the excellent quality of food I felt this was very reasonable. All the food was cooked to an excellent standard.

The staff were extremely accommodating, efficient and very friendly.

The ambience was wonderful.

My only complaint was the ladies toilet... Very clean but when one sat down, there was little room between my knees and the wall and it was very awkward to move into position!

The toilet needs repositioning.

I can be critical of food and especially service and I will inform the manager if I have a problem. But I had no reason to fault this restaurant!

Well done Mediterranean you are first class! I will be definitely visiting again.

Chez Lahlou (Steel Bank) - Todd Woods - 29th May 2011
Rating:

You simply cannot beat the value for money that you get here. The food is fresh and fantastic. The decor is dated but doesn't deter from the great food.

Service at times was slow but the staff are friendly.

Would recommend you try this place, don't order a starter you simply won't finish the rest of your meal.

Browns (City Centre) - Shaun Greenwood - 28th May 2011
Rating:

Food overpriced, no atmosphere.

Friday night about 9 o'clock it was not particularly busy but people were walking out because bar service was taking too long. And to add insult to injury the guy behind the bar "forgot" to give me my change!

All in all, rubbish. It was a lot better when it was Ha Ha Bar!

Balti King (Broomhill) - Lauren Marsh - 27th May 2011
Rating:

Balti King the only Indian in town with all its new and thrilling and exciting dishes it will have you floating away to a fantastical paradise, "India".

So pop along and let your taste buds go wild with their fantastical array of dishes, especially cooked for you.

Rushour (Heeley) - John - 25th May 2011
Rating:

I have reviewed this restaurant before but a visit 23rd May 2011 encourages me to write again.

On Tuesdays they do a 'best of British', which is three courses for £10. I had a very nice leek and potato soup and then chose the fish, chips and mushy peas and this prompts me to write, as I have just recently has this meal at a famous Hotel in the Cotswolds with two stars. Rushour's fish and chips was twice as good again and much cheaper. With a choice of sweets, the value and quality will please everyone.

Give Tuesdays a try.

Jewel (Attercliffe) - Kevin - 22nd May 2011
Rating:

We attended Jewel restaurant as a pre-booked group of 15 people for a birthday party. The restaurant is relatively new and we thought it would be nice to support new local business. We were sadly disappointed.

The restaurant was relatively empty, however it took two hours to serve the group. When the food was eventually served the waiter served the wrong food to 4 people in the group. The dishes were then swapped once the people had started eating. The waiter even asked a member of the party to taste the naan bread to check that it was not the chilli one.

There was no toilet tissue in the ladies toilets. When asked to replace this, it took 30 minutes. A member of the party had to ask at the bar. She was given toilet tissue to walk through the restaurant with and refill the toilets herself.

The restaurant charged £3 for a pint of diet Pepsi, which seems very expensive, for a drink poured in front of your eyes from a two litre bottle marked £1.39.

As the food took so long to be served a member of the party needed to call a taxi to get home. A waiter was asked to call a taxi (twice). 30 minutes later we asked where this taxi was. The waiter admitted to not making any call.

In light of these issues, I can confirm that the food was good, but the restaurant really needs to sort things out! Hopefully the restaurant reads this and make the necessary changes.

Piccolos (City Centre) - Karen Capps - 22nd May 2011
Rating:

Our first visit on recommendation.

Food was excellent. Service was amazing. Very attentive staff. We were frequently checked on. Slightly expensive but worth every penny.

The garlic bread was to die for and my steak was perfectly cooked and really tender.

Would happily recommend it.

Bella Roma (Hillsborough) - Brenda Callaghan - 22nd May 2011
Rating:

Had another lovely meal at Bella Roma last Thursday. We needed to be out and on our way to town for a show at the City Hall by 7:15-ish.

Food, as usual, was great. My son had to finish mine because I had been greedy and had a huge garlic bread before the huge dish of tagliatelle.

So went to the City Hall as happy as Larry... and Ed Byrne was good as well!

Angelo Cerrone's (Ecclesfield) - Sarah Jones - 19th May 2011
Rating:

I had my hen night here and booked the whole place out, Christmas 2004. We all ate together, veggies and meat eaters together. All 42 had our starters, mains and desserts together - brilliant! Made my special night VERY special.

Eaten here loads of times of since, and always yummy, an added bonus to Ecclesfield village.

Bella Roma (Hillsborough) - Julie Douglas - 19th May 2011
Rating:

Lovely food, friendly staff.

Only complaint is the portions were massive and I couldn't manage a pudding!

Bella Roma (Hillsborough) - Kevin - 18th May 2011
Rating:

This restaurant is quite something. The staff on the front are very friendly with customers. I came to this restaurant before it was Bella Roma and I prefer it as Bella Roma. The main chef in the kitchen can cook very well. The prices aren't too bad, either. Hope I gave you an insight to this excellent, clean and friendly restaurant.

Saffron Club (City Centre) - Andrew Walters - 15th May 2011
Rating:

It has been several months since my last visit to the Saffron Club, but as usual it did not disappoint.

This truly is a remarkable restaurant for consistently achieving the highest standards of both service and quality of food. The delicate spicing of everything I have tried at this venue is what sets it apart from any other Indian in Sheffield.

If you really think you are a curry lover this restaurant is a must visit!

Thank you once again for a terrific night.

Old Horns Inn (Bradfield) - Lauren Walsh - 14th May 2011
Rating:

I visited the Old Horns Inn at Bradfield on a Saturday lunchtime. The pub was fairly busy, with what looked like a wedding party, and various other tables of diners.

The pub offers table service and I ordered the burger from the specials board, which came with bacon, cheese, sweet chili sauce and chips.

The food arrived quickly enough and was hot. The firs thing that I noticed was the sheer amount of chips - I was obviously not going t leave hungry! Whilst not to everyone's taste, these were like chips that you'd get from the fish and chip shop.

To be honest the burger was a bit of a let down. The bread bun was more like the type that you'd have for a sandwich rather than a burger - a bit "fluffy". One of my pet hates is putting grated cheese on a burger - I much prefer a slice - and the Old Horns Inn does grated cheese. The burger itself was a bit fatty, so it may have been deep fried rather than grilled, I'm not sure.

The dish would have benefited from a bit more coleslaw in my opinion. The coleslaw came in one of the little dishes that you usually get condiments like tomato ketchup in.

At £7.95 it wasn't exactly great value for money, but the restaurant itself is nice and they do a good range of real ales, so it was an enjoyable enough meal.

I'd go back but would choose something different from the menu. The gammon looked good and came with 2 eggs as well as pineapple, peas and chips.

Shapla Tandoori Restaurant (City Centre) - Glen Marshall - 14th May 2011
Rating:

Absolutely gobsmacked at some of the reviews on here... we go a couple of times a month, and have never had a bad meal. Food is certainly one of the best in and around Sheffield, and beats the overrated Aagrah easily in my opinion.

Don't let the bad reviews put you off - highly recommended!

Greenhead House Restaurant (Chapeltown) - N Turner - 14th May 2011
Rating:

A sweet family-run restaurant with a homely feel (perhaps a little too twee in parts).

There is a monthly set menu (with no specials) and an average £45 price tag for four courses plus coffee. Personally I found the menu and food to be a little old-fashioned and lacking in inventiveness - despite the price tag this is not contemporary/fine dining.

I started with the 'asparagus bouchee' - which was a puff pastry case with perfectly cooked asparagus in a butter sauce. There were no other discernible flavours but it was tasty.

The sorbet was too sweet to be a palate cleanser although had a nice pink grapefruit flavour.

For mains I had 'Sole Veronique'. The fish was cooked well, but it was rather swimming in cream sauce, which had little discernible flavour of wine etc... It was 'decorated' with little crescents of puff pastry. I can't help thinking braised fennel would have been a better accompaniment, especially when following a puff pastry starter.

My fellow diners had the steak and lamb. Both felt the standard was not worthy of the price tag.

The side vegetables were frankly poor - big lumps of steamed/boiled salsify, decorative carrot slices and undercooked leeks swimming in cream.

The chocolate and brioche pudding I had for dessert was a stodgy lump, but came with lovely rum and raisin ice-cream.

We had an enjoyable evening, the staff are very attentive but can't honestly say the quality of food lived up to the reputation.

Hellas Cafe Deli Bar (City Centre) - Ellen - 13th May 2011
Rating:

Just been to Hellas for take away lunch.

Very clean, cafe/deli style, with TV playing Greek channel, which gave it a nice Greek feel.

You can eat in or take out.

Food was very tasty, all freshly made so had to wait a bit for order but well worth it. We ordered two paninis, one tuna and cheese and one mozzarella, tomato and pesto. We also ordered some humus, mixed olives and some stuffed vine leaves... oh and I did treat myself to a bottle of Greek Mythos beer, as they are also fully licensed which is always a bonus for me.

Would definitely recommend and definitely return for another Greek lunch.

Well worth a visit.

Bella Napoli (Nether Edge) - Elizabeth Dawes - 13th May 2011
Rating:

If you want to eat really well on tasty authentic Italian food then try this wonderful restaurant.

Small, intimate space, but food is cooked to order in the tiny kitchen by the owner and it is truly wonderful

Take your own wine, and booking is essential.

Popolo Bar Lounge & Kitchen (City Centre) - Elizabeth Dawes - 13th May 2011
Rating:

One star for the waitress and for the freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

The restaurant empty when others in Leopold Square were full. Food was poor. Margarita pizza was just a circle of dough with a drizzle of pesto and a few blobs of cheese, topped with a few chunks of tomatoes. Lasagna was very dry with one layer of pasta on the bottom and then the sauce and topped with about 6 layers of pasta all stuck together.

We did complain but were told that this was Popolo's interpretation of the dishes. Perhaps they need to re-interpret the dishes.

Very badly handled.

Chutney (Gleadless) - John Tashock - 12th May 2011
Rating:

I have been a Chutney customer since they opened last year. I regularly visit them and use their free delivery option all the time. Delivery is prompt and efficient. The food is superb and cooked with great care. The restaurant is very busy, I would advise anyone to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

I am really disappointed and shocked to see Kirsty's recent comment, the restaurant is usually extremely busy and all the staff work their hardest to provide the best customer experience, the waiters had the courtesy to tell us that our food would be delayed at times because of the massive amount of orders and people in the restaurant at the time. This is usually a rarity because the restaurant's really popular with locals.

The normal delivery time is between 30-45 minutes, but on occasion can go up to an hour. I cannot recommend the restaurant enough and I'm a regular customer.

Overall the food is exquisite, the restaurant has a good atmosphere and I will be sure to remain a customer and this will remain to be my favourite restaurant in Sheffield.
