We booked a table to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary. On arrival we were given a cramped table for two by the toilets, my husband almost being hit by the door every time it was opened. An older couple were given the table next to us and we joked about the cramped conditions, where there was only space for 1 table really. However it appeared the manager knew them and came and moved them to a spacious table that would seat 4. We were then asked whether we wanted wine and when we responded yes, the waiter acted with surprise. (We are two solicitors in our 30s who were well-dressed). We were then asked within 30 seconds what wine we wanted, when we hadn't had time to even open the wine list. The food was good and one of the waitresses was pleasant and seemed interested in our views of the new desert on the specials. When it came to paying the bill the senior waiter charged us an extra pound on each of the deserts, which were actually a pound cheaper on the specials. When my husband pointed this out he told us we had done well to spot it. He then re-entered the amount but then cancelled it and re-entered it at the original price £2 higher than it should have been. We had to point the error out again and were finally able to pay the correct amount. On leaving the restaurant only one of the waiters actually acknowledged us with most of them barging their way past us. Saturday Morning Coffee We then went for coffee on Saturday morning, when it was unusually quiet. My husband asked to place an order for outside and was told he could only do so if we paid for it. Funnily enough we are not accustomed to ordering items we do not wish to pay for. To our surprise it took 20 minutes for the coffee to arrive outside. My husband went in to chase it after 15 minutes and was told: 'Two cappuccinos, yeah we know'. No apology. Other people who arrived after us had received their coffee and left. Our son who is 10 months was fed up by the time it arrived - less the muffin we had ordered and paid for and had to remind them about. Cubana (City Centre) - Becky Tubb - 21st June 2011

Everything about this place is fab. The food, the atmosphere and the cocktails! Yum, yum. We had a fantastic night at this great restaurant/bar. Champs Sports Bar & Restaurant (Ecclesall) - Jim Ruston - 20th June 2011

Went back here after not eating here for a couple of years. It used to offer great American diner food. Unfortunately, things have changed. The nachos starter were the only reason it wasn't one star. The ribs were dry, chewy and bland. The burgers lacked seasoning and the chips were the kind you get in a school canteen. Onions rings were forgotten and when they arrived they weren't worth the wait. They had no flavour other than flour. Very disappointing. Not surprised it was empty. My oldest son recently celebrated his eighteenth, and we wanted to go somewhere special, but which would cater to the whole family. We suggested one of the more traditional venues but in the end he did a bit of research and came up with this place. It really was just what we wanted. At Swanky Frank's the food is high quality and imaginative, but the atmosphere is relaxed and there is the burger and steak option, which kept his younger brother and sister happy. I won't go through the detail of what we ate but it was all good. The concept is mainly meat-based, and essentially fairly simple but prepared to a high quality with nice individual touches. I was attracted to the wide selection of home made burgers and so opted for the very original "Italiano burger", topped with buffalo mozzarella, juicy sliced tomatoes and basil served with fresh coleslaw and a baked potato. This attention to detail made it agreeable for my wife and I, but without being too fussy for the kids. Desserts were good too - cheescake was baked, dense and rich - not a drop of gelatine in sight! We found service to be efficient, attentive and pleasant. Dinner for 5 with three courses and a few (but not many) drinks came to around £80 - very good value, especially for the quality. Whatever I may think the main judge has to be my son; it was his evening and he loved it.

We visited Portofino on Friday evening quite late. We received a very warm, friendly welcome from the staff, who didn't appear put out by this at all. The food was fantastic. I would rate the food 6 stars if I could. I wanted slightly different ingredients in my calzone and they were happy to oblige. We also had fried seafood to start, which was very fresh and very different, delicious. There is only one area where I think this restaurant could improve. It needs better ambiance. Otherwise we will definitely be back the next time we visit Sheffield and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Portofinos. Cubana (City Centre) - Mauricio Sirvent-Contreras - 14th June 2011

A large group of friends and I had a superb evening in Cubana. Our waitress was great, really friendly and helpful. She recommended a wide range of tasty dishes and my favourite was definitely the Calamres y Chorizo dish and a fantastic Spanish paella, but there was also plenty on offer for my vegetarian friend. The atmosphere was lively and fun and we had a great night. Will definitely be going back and will recommend to other friends. Shapla Tandoori Restaurant (City Centre) - Benjamin - 13th June 2011

Lovely atmosphere, great lighting and surroundings and gorgeous food. Loved the service and very authentic styled restaurant. Highly recommended.

Went with my partner and his parents. Had the most amazing meal in a relaxed atmosphere. The best Italian I have had in Sheffield. The food was tasty and the house white was lovely. The staff were lovely, very efficient, friendly, welcoming and helpful. The owner was an amazing host and friendly towards us. Would recommend Portofino to others. Thank you for a lovely evening. Can't wait to come back. Jewel (Attercliffe) - T Hall - 12th June 2011

Short and to the point: it was over-priced for what it was! Will not be going back. Bangla Cottage (Hillsborough) - Greg Cranston - 11th June 2011

I wonder if Ann is talking about the same place also! The other restaurant mentioned is on the opposite side of Sheffield! Would say I've had the opposite experience. Over the last 2 years, I've become good friends with the guys at this place as a regular, and that's simply because they provide excellent food with excellent service and with a friendly touch whenever I need them to. They all really care about what they do and how they can be even better. I think the dishes all have quite individual character, and I've had the majority of them probably. Like the other reviewer, I take other people here, and they all often end up suggesting Bangla Cottage on the next occasion, including my parents. Eat in and out lots, both great experiences. Bangla is on tap inside, which is a nice addition. Highly recommended to try, and not particularly expensive. Angelo Cerrone's (Ecclesfield) - Richard Lewis - 10th June 2011

I like the food here - it's always cooked fresh and tastes wonderful. You can see Angelo cooking it in the open-plan restaurant and it is this that is my only problem. When he is cooking not all of the fumes seem to go up the flue and some spill out into the restaurant. This can be annoying, as it irritates my eyes. Apart from that its a wonderful establishment. This is our favourite restaurant - would recommend it to everyone. First-class food, great atmosphere. Service can be a little slow sometimes but it's well worth the wait. Vito's Italian Restaurant (Walkley) - Jon Styring - 10th June 2011

I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. The food and service was outstanding, the meals where just right in portion size and the relaxed atmosphere and un-hurried service, complete with a waitress who was very friendly and attentive, only made the night even better. The prices are irrelevant, as I would gladly pay a lot more for such good, fresh food and very nice wine. I truly wish that I had found Vito's a long time ago, as it has shot to the top of my favourite restaurant list. I will be going a lot more in the future. This is the first time my wife & myself have had a meal here & we certainly were not disappointed. The service was excellent with very friendly & helpful staff. And the food was very good, well presented and good value for money. Must make a special note of the chips, which were probably the best tasting chips I have ever eaten! It certainly won't be our last visit. Blue Moon Cafe (City Centre) - J Thorpe, K Parker, L Owen, P Sharma - 7th June 2011

A ladies-that-lunch Tuesday lunch break, 3 of us strictly meat eaters but 1 colleague vegetarian. We entered the bright, airy building with trepidation, what could we find to eat that would tempt and tantalise our palettes? The cafe was buzzing, barely a table spare. At the food counter a wonderful array of foods unheard of. Not to worry, the friendly staff were helpful and descriptive of the choices available. We chose homity pie with a generous helping of salad, cauliflower cheese with rice and salad and a bean wrap. The food was hot, tasty and well-seasoned. Licensed with a good choice of drinks. We all cleared our plates we enjoyed it so much, and would certainly make a return visit. Swanky Frank's (Woodseats) - John Grehan - 5th June 2011

Enjoyed a family meal at Swanky Franks, to celebrate my birthday. The food and service were great. Great choice and good portions. Very friendly... would recommend it to everyone. Aagrah (City Centre) - John Sheepy - 4th June 2011

Visited on 02/06/2011 As regulars at other Aagrah restaurants I am pleased to report that Sheffield lives up to the high standards. An excellent meal so close to the City Hall Good, caring service was linked to good value - I can highly recommend.

I have been going to this restaurant for the last 5 years with my boyfriend. The food and wine has never disappointed and the service excellent. Therefore I decided to take my sister as a treat for her birthday, and my mother. They never get to any decent restaurants and as I constantly rave about West 10 it was something they were both looking forward to. Our visit was an absolute disaster! The food was fine and not one of us had a complaint about that. But the service would have embarrassed Basil Fawlty. The list of criticisms is endless but here are just a few: One diner was sat on his own. He had obviously been drinking all day and there was no sign of his meal which I assumed he had already finished. He was absolutely wasted, shouted rather than talked to a group of women and his constant bad language was inappropriate. It was very uncomfortable for the few of us in the restaurant and the waitresses completely ignored the issue. A couple came into the restaurant and were seated on the table next to the drunk even though there were tables available everywhere (they were not busy, even though it was Saturday evening). I could not believe the waitress' choice. After 5 minutes the couple asked to be re-seated and the drunk got the message and left. My sister and I shared a starter, which my sister liked and asked the waitress what was in it. She said she had no idea, went to grab a menu and tried to read the name of the dish out to us (which we already knew). Unfortunately it was foreign, she couldn't pronounce anything, giggled and gave up. While I was still eating my starter (fork in mouth) the waitress came to me and asked me if I had finished? "Obviously not", I replied. She was quite put out and said that the chef had already finished our main course and it was now waiting on the side. So we were forced to allow her to take away our starter so the main meal could be served. The steak was excellent although I wouldn't usually eat steak but the choice on the menu was limited. There was no specials board, either. While I was eating another waitress kneeled on the empty chair next to mine, leant over me across the table to collect glasses to the extent that I had to move out of the way. We asked to see the desert menu, which turned out to be at the bottom of the main menu that we had already seen. (There was a list of sandwiches available on this menu. Obviously they can't be bothered to produce a separate daytime and evening menu!) We actually wanted coffees, which didn't appear on the menu so I asked the waitress what coffees they served. Cappuccino, espresso or percolated she said. I asked if they could make an Irish coffee. No, she said. I could go on but I won't. There didn't seem to be anyone in charge and I never saw the owner around so I assumed he was on holiday, unless he has moved on. I have to say we found it hilarious because the evening was so ridiculous. I really do not know what has happened to this place. Whenever friends or family came to stay with us we would always take them to West 10. Whenever we had anything to celebrate my boyfriend and I went to West 10 but I have to say, never again! We now have to find another favourite restaurant. Gutted! Jewel (Attercliffe) - Bill - 2nd June 2011

A group of 7 of us went to the restaurant, as it looked quite new and modern and also very quiet, so we thought we would check it out. The restaurant has its own car park at rear, so it saves hassle and is very convenient. The front of the house (i.e. the waiters) were very friendly and very, very quick to respond to our every need, which is always helpful. We all agreed that the food tasted spectacular and we would easily and happily recommend it to anyone. The food didn't take long to serve and the meal we ordered was delicious and worth every penny. So overall we thought that the evening was enjoyable and everyone "up" for a good night. Make sure you check it out. Jewel (Attercliffe) - Sandra - 1st June 2011
Rating:
The restaurant was fairly quiet but the hospitality was great. The waiters were quite moderate however they lacked attention to detail. The restaurant inside looked very modern and cosy although I couldn't say for the outside since it looked boring. The profile for Jewel on this website says it doesn't have its own car park but in fact it does. The food came relatively quick and tasted brilliant. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a quick tasty Indian meal. More reviews:
