A visit to this restaurant is a bit like the curate's egg - good in parts. The starter platter was excellent but the crispy duck pancakes were a disappointment. Not crispy duck as we knew it. However the rest of the meal was tasty and despite some of our reservations we enjoyed it. The experience was affected by the staff being so busy that drinks orders were forgotten and wine undelivered until reordered. Although the evening was passable I cannot wax lyrical as some reviewers do. Neither can I report some of the extremely negative responses of others. Suffice to say I would not drive across the city to dine here again but I thank the manager and staff for the efforts, which just fell short of the mark! Paul, Joanne & Emma - 26th December 2011

I visit this restaurant on a fortnightly basis with family, as it is the most abundant Chinese I have been to. Its situation in the Fulwood area is a great first impression and it is set in its own grounds, which makes you feel grand and superior! It really has an oriental feel to it, inside and out! As you enter your host will more than likely be Tazmin the owner, who provides a great rapport with you and treats you like an old friend, he is great. The food... well, the beautiful smells, the sizzling sounds and the exciting colourful dishes that are served on your table is fantastic! They can adjust dishes to suit your dietary needs. I can promise that you will want to return and never want to visit another Chinese restaurant again apart from this one! Belinda Herdman - 14th December 2011

The food here is absolutely delicious - the best Chinese I've eaten in the country! Definitely a cut above the London Road scene and not over-priced in my mind. The welcome is friendly and the atmosphere made special by a generous, amusing host. The restaurant building is very impressive and the grounds lovely. Highly recommended for a special occasion or just a fantastic meal. Enjoy! Steven - 16th November 2011

Looked good from outside, very professional. Then we walked inside... it looked like an ordinary pub with China paintings on the wall, very poor effort. The food was the worst and the most over priced I have had in Sheffield. I had spring rolls costing £4 and I got two small pieces. The filling was supposed to be mixed vegetables, it only had in it mung beans. I had chicken satay costing £9 and there were 3 pieces of chicken tossed with onions, peppers and drenched in oil. No sign of peanut sauce. We also had egg fried rice and chicken and sweet corn soup. All were tasteless. If you want bland, over priced food then come to this place. Michelle - 4th July 2011

I visited Canton Orchard this Saturday evening and would not go ever again. The staff, with the exception of the manager, were rude and unhelpful. They were snappy and made me feel like I was asking for the world. As with other reviews you could not read the bill and was offered a pen and calculator. In conclusion you stick to the carpet and don't drink the tap water! I can not rate this as they don't do minus stars. Sue - 4th May 2011

I had a great experience at the Canton Orchard. The manager (what I can guess) that reviewers seem to have criticised I thought to be a very friendly, generous and charming man. The food arrived, and I thought it was delicious, I have been to many Chinese restaurants in Sheffield, as I love Chinese food. Yes the food here is more expensive than your usual ones in town, London Road, however I think it is worth it, as the quality of the food was second-to-none. It was truly delicious. I particularly loved the lobster, mmm could have it every day. The grounds that the Canton Orchard is set in are romantic and classy, great atmosphere. I recommend it to people, and think it is especially nice for occasions such as anniversary dinners, birthdays etc... maybe a special day if you can't afford to eat there every week, like me! Hehe! I came here on my birthday and they made a real effort to make it a truly wonderful day! Maybe these peeps caught the manager on a wrong day? Because the one I met did not seem to be anything like the one described! I really hope one/two of these reviews do not put people off coming to this restaurant, as it is me, my family and friends' favourite place and hope that people can enjoy it as much as we do! Well what can I say besides a lovely looking venue on the outside, however once you enter the venue that is where the disappointment begins. We were greeted by a very, very agitated man indeed, he turned out to be the restaurant owner. We sat with our friends, who arrived prior to us. From beginning to end of our visit we were rushed through our meal and at no point did a member of staff ask how our meal was. We were told that we could not order extra noodles and advised by this agitated and odd man that we could not do so and that we were to eat another guest's at the table. At this point I thought that he was joking but when the meal did arrive we were indeed left to eat our friend's noodles. It was almost as if we were causing this man some sort of inconvenience by being there. To be honest the food was over-priced and really very unimpressive. When we eventually dared ask for the bill it was marched across to us in the agitated style and plonked on our table. As a previous review of this restaurant describes, when we could not read the £109 bill, we asked the manager for direction, and at this point he chucked a pen, a calculator and paper on the table and told us to work the bill out ourselves. This indeed proved to be the final Canton Orchard straw. Myself and other guests challenged his awful attitude, to receive a tirade of abuse from him. He raised his voice much to the shock of other parties in the restaurant. It was then pointed out to him that we were paying customers and this was in no way to treat members of the public who were there on their first, and indeed last, visit to his venue. At this point he walked away to be chased by a member of the waiting staff who told him to "calm down" and that we were being reasonable as to enquire what our bill actually said. He returned to the table to start shouting again and trying to grab my friend's card out of his hand. We then advised the manager that we would not pay the bill in full due to the appalling customer service and the overall standard of the food, which is completely over priced for an incredibly small portion. After the card payment had been made the manager then proceeded to shout "get out" to the entire party on several occasions and further made a racist comment that cannot be repeated on this website, as consideration is currently being made as to whether or not to address this particular incident legally. I should also add that one member of the party was a six year old child who had to be removed from the table by her mother due to the manager's aggressive manner. Will never ever go back again and would never recommend this restaurant to anybody. Claire Kay - 15th November 2009

I was looking for a quality restaurant with good food and after reading a review here that gave this place A+, I called up and booked a table for me and my dad. We got lost and ended up arriving not a second after 10 minutes late. A man (I assume the manager) walked briskly up to meet us and as we said "Hi we're really sorry but…" he cut us short and very rudely said "No you're late you can't come in'. Completely taken aback we pointed out we were only 10 minutes late. He butted in before we could finish and said "I told you to come at 7:15PM, you didn't so you can't come in" and started to herd us out. The young girl / waitress standing next to him (who could have been his daughter) rolled her eyes in apparent embarrassment and turned away in a manner that suggested she'd seen it all before. Needless to say we left but it put a real dampener on the night. I would strongly recommend against going to this place. No customer service skills at all, and I can't begin to imagine how his poor staff survive working under him. Adah Jones - 6th September 2009

A+. The best Chinese restaurant in Sheffield if you are looking for a high standard surroundings and high quality food. Plus, they sell the cheapest wines within all the restaurants in Sheffield, including those good and luxury ones. The manager told us he can always get good bargains on it, thanks for his generous sharing. Just ask him for recommendations, really generous person. My father has been their customer for almost 15 years, sometimes take us to try other restaurants, but always go back to Canton Orchard. Looking forward to my birthday party next month... I miss the yummy food there! Surely, if you want cheap junk, I wouldn't recommend this Canton Orchard, you can certainly find those 'eat what you can' or noodle bars in town, not Ranmoor area. I didn't realise there is a such a nice Chinese restaurant in Sheffield, beautiful food, homely environment, big green garden and cosy decking! Canton Orchard was recommended by a friend after having a meal there, and my parents booked a day for a family party without any hesitance. Steve - 11th May 2008

The restaurant is set in lovely, well-maintained grounds and the building has a pleasant character. But that's about the best of it. Hardly a relaxing enjoyable experience...we felt rushed by the arrogant manager who took our order. Service was sadly lacking on all fronts. Food arrived sporadically. My son's spare ribs were like balls of rubber. They replaced them with slightly better bones. The main courses were very good. But again, a couple of dishes were late to the table. The draught beer isn't kept well so we had draught lager and then resorted to bottled Tiger. The wine was quite good. We couldn't decipher the bill, £104, so the manager brought us a pen, paper and calculator but the point is we couldn't read it... but hardly value for money. We mentioned our dissatisfaction about the service/starter to the manager who went back to the kitchen to chastise the staff, and later returned with a bottle of wine and apologies and thanks for our observations... but we won't be going back.
