It had been a while since we last visited Taste for a breakfast so we thought we would take advantage of not having our children for the morning by treating ourselves.

Well, we wish we hadn't bothered. It was terrible, the worse breakfast I have ever been served! After discussing with the very friendly waitress what my desired meal was it didn't come anything like it.

Trust me and avoid Taste, its not what it was and cost a small fortune, not to mention the fact that I told them how bad the meal was (and showed them that I had only eaten the one piece of toast) and the server taking my money just said "oh, I'm sorry" and continued to cash it into the till. Terrible food and terrible service!

Despite advertisements, I would not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a venue to book any party for a number of people. Despite booking the venue well in advance, for a large group having a Christmas party, the venue was ill-equipped for our group attending.

As a small venue, which has been run as a bistro for some time, we had thought that we had made it clear that it was an office party and we would be coming to have a good time. What transpired was that the restaurant had continued to take bookings from diners wishing to have a quiet, intimate meal. Those diners, quite understandably did not appreciate having a large party going on very close to where they were dining.

How the restaurant chose to deal with this was, in my opinion, very unprofessional. The restaurant staff chastised our party and seemed to endorse the negative comments launched at us by the other diners. When we complained that we had organised this with the venue some two months before she accused us of misleading them and having not been clear with them over the booking that was made. In my opinion this was absolutely not true.

Whilst I will make no criticism of the food that we received, customer service in my experience was little to non-existent. If you were looking for a private intimate dining experience I'm sure you would be more than welcome. In my experience a party of 16 was far from welcome in this restaurant.

Marco Zerboni, of Taste restaurant responds:

In reply to Claire Ward, I want to say that your party was very welcome in our restaurant - in fact, you were made more than welcome, ordering things that were off the menu, bringing your own music, only paying corkage per person rather than per bottle ad much more.

The only reason why you were asked to leave (after numerous requests to keep it down as many of your party were shouting and swearing) was because this shouting and swearing became directed at other customers - we cannot tolerate this.

Your party were 16 and our restaurant caters for up to 36 - if you wanted exclusivity, you should have requested it, but you didn't and you knew all along that there would be other diners. There were 12 other diners that night who all complained about your party. In any pub, club, bar or restaurant you have to behave so as to be respectful to others and we don't understand why you think that you should have been exempt from this, it wasn't acceptable.

After being asked to leave (as you were going anyway and we simply couldn't do anything else because you were being so rude), some members of your party threatened one of our customers and defaced our property (by pushing over our A-boards).

Like I said to numerous members of your party on the night, if you want to come and discuss the matter further with us, we will be happy to talk to you but you should understand that you were made very welcome and lots of allowances were made for you but other customers had just as much right as you to be there.

We are sorry that you didn't enjoy your night, it is unfortunate.

This place is next door to Woodie's sandwich shop at Hunter's Bar, Ecclesall Road, which is a firm favourite in our family for Saturday morning with a newspaper...

In the daytime Taste serves coffee, tea and cakes etc, and it is a bring-your-own-wine bistro / restaurant on an evening.

We went for the Italian Tapas night, which seems to run once a month. The staff here got it exactly right; formal so you know you're a customer, whilst approachable and friendly.

Our waitress recommended 5 tapas dishes between two of us to have enough variety and still leave room for pud. They arrived together, piping hot, and each with a very distinctive flavour. Our favourites were the Roman roast belly pork, which was rolled around a robust fennel seed stuffing, and the tomato & bean stew recommended by the waitress, but all of the dishes were distinct and individual.

I haven't had Italian food like this before and will be back for more.

Puddings were equally good and the coffee was Italian and strong.

The bill was less than £40 for the two of us!

Highly recommended - next time I go I'll know take an Italian red with me.

Have eaten here on at least 6 occasions now and intend to keep going back!

Service is friendly, accommodating, efficient, and always with a smile.

Food is fresh and delicious. My boyfriend thinks the Italian breakfast is fantastic and the Italian sausage unbeatable!

I am working my way through the extensive sandwich and Panini menu and am yet to be disappointed. Would thoroughly recommend the bacon, goat's cheese and roast mushroom toasted Panini.

Home made Italian cakes also wonderful - try the muffins!

Will be continuing to return!

I recently visited Taste after hearing it had been taken over as an Italian.

Everything was excellent - the food was brilliant value for money, the service was good - staff were friendly, helpful and smiley. The food was really, really tasty. Can't wait to go back!

Called in at Taste on the 'off-chance', and were certainly not disappointed. Called in on a Sunday lunch time and enjoyed a lovely lasagne, vegetarian dish of the day, followed by great coffee and gorgeous cakes.

Staff were very attentive and pleasant, made me and my family very welcome.

Excellent food and service, would highly recommend Taste. I had an eat-in panini that was very tasty, plus superb coffee. Also try the grostl, my other half ordered this it was superb. Can't wait for Taste to start opening during the evening!

Wow! I have been to this place quite a lot; in fact you could call me a regular. Very fond of it. The bacon and sausages are always of the highest quality, as are the eggs. The proprietor Jamie Bosworth strives for perfection.

A 5 star brekkie caff, although the last time my eggs were just a little overdone and needed to be a little more over easy time please.

I have been to this trendy litte breakfast/lunch place on Ecclesall Road a couple of times and have been very impressed by the surroundings, atmosphere, service and food.

The decor is modern and minimalistic with bench seating downstairs and tables upstairs. With use of calming colours one immediately feels relaxed and able to leisurely eat, sip coffee, read the paper whilst watching the world go by.

For lunch there are various options including delicious toasted sandwiches and salads. Recently, my wife and I had a tasty 'Royale' breakfast of scrambled egg, smoked salmon on muffin which was imaginitively presented. It was complemented by a lovely guava and strawberry smoothie. In short, I would recommend you give this joint a try.
