This was my first experience of Platillos and it wasn't a very good one. It took almost 20 minutes just to order drinks after being seated, which they mixed up and sent us Jameson's with apple juice rather than cranberry juice as ordered.
When when we finally did order we were waiting over 20 minutes for starters, but as half the table ordered items of tapas for both their starter and main course the kitchen sent everything all at once. The people who ordered a traditional starter and main course were then waiting over 30 minutes for their meals, while those who had tapas had finished their meal. We specified which items of tapas were to be as starters, and which to be brought as main courses when ordered with the waitresses so this was disappointing.
The food was under-seasoned and the red mullet came out cold and when sent it back they didn't replace with a new serving but just microwaved the original. As I am a chef myself I was shocked about this.
The food as a whole was not hot, and was kept waiting under the hot lights for long periods of time before being brought to the table. We ordered more drinks, which again were brought incorrectly.
No apology was offered for the mistakes that were made, and we were made to feel as though were were just being awkward customers.
The bill was over £130 for 4 people, which for the service and poor quality food we received, we felt was overpriced.
There were more issues, which we raised with the staff at the time of the meal, but we hope this gives you a feel of the experience we had.

I have visited this restaurant on quite a few occasions now, and have always been impressed with the overall experience.
Recently I attended with a large group of friends for a birthday and was very pleased with the level of service we received. Not only were the staff very helpful with the booking of our evening, making it very easy, but on the night itself we were well looked after, even though they were incredibly busy.
The food is always very tasty and the atmosphere is fun and vibrant. The lunch and "early bird" menus are really good value for money and there always seems to be something going on such as special offers or interesting events.
I would definitely recommend this great independent Sheffield restaurant.

Came to Platillos bar at the weekend, which was my first time in Sheffield for many years. Splendid meal, great surroundings, good friendly service. Try the strawberry fruit beer!

I would like for you to understand a first experience at your bar, and the consequence your staff has had upon it.
To give you some perspective, it is said that for every good review, a person will tell four people. For every bad there will be thirty they will tell, I'm sorry to say, you picked the wrong person to give a bad impression to.
We turned up, admittedly, deliberately, unannounced at your bar, upon questioning the bar staff they didn't know how to handle wine, to which Brett (one of your staff) advised me that the white was refrigerated (too cold) and the red had been left on the bar side for about a week (and as such submitted to varying temperatures night after night, ruining any quality in the wine), we were told later (by someone else) it was left there only a day - consistency please?
Further to this, we we're told we were being served this in "Spanish" wine glasses, please, if there were such a thing, a simple search would find them. I use ISO wine glasses for tasting, as I am part of a few wine clubs, and do not believe there to be "Spanish" glasses.
So lets talk about the food, which came quickly originally, and as far as vegetarian food was concerned was OK, but charging £8 for a small (and it was) cold meat salad? Do you regard this to be value for your food?
Then later when my friends arrive you tell me that we can no longer order food downstairs because of how busy you are in the restaurant upstairs and we can't be seated upstairs at all tonight, even though I spoke to your people at 08:45 this morning (Wednesday 29th May 2008) and he advised I wouldn't need to book. This is some kind of joke surely?
The worst thing of all of this, is that upon leaving disappointed, I tried to provide feedback to your bar staff member "Brett", I advised him it was the first time myself and my friends had attended and our experience had been a poor one, given the reasons cited above, his response was that he threw his hands in the air and said "I've only two hands mate", it didn't occur to him to raise this complaint to someone capable of registering it, with a view to improving service in future? My god, are we still living in that backward a culture?
I will rate this very poorly, overpriced, badly kept wine (for a wine bar) and unable to cater for people when they come.

I visited Platillos Bar & Restaurant with my wife and a couple of friends on Sunday 22nd July. We had heard that there were some new restaurants opening at Leopold Square so decided to give this one a go. We were not disappointed.
The restaurant was not very busy, however, I anticipate it will be once people hear about it.
The staff were extremely friendly and courteous.
The food was excellent; there was a wide selection of tapas, we felt spoilt for choice. We ordered about 12-14 dishes between us and each one was very enjoyable.
The decor was nice and there is also a seating area outside.
On the day we visited, Platillos Bar & Restaurant had a problem with the fire alarm which kept going off briefly when they tried to put music on. This did not really bother us or spoil the meal but even so we were offered a round of free coffees for the inconvenience - a very nice touch!
We will definitely be heading back to Platillos Bar & Restaurant in the near future
