The woman behind the success of one of Sheffield's top hotels has been shortlisted for a Business Woman of the Year award.

Orla Watt, general manager of The Copthorne Hotel, Sheffield is in the running for next month's Forward Ladies Corporate Business Woman award, which celebrates the successes of women across the north in business.

Orla moved from The Copthorne Hotel, Cardiff to set up the boutique style hotel and since opening in 2009 it has been ranked number one for customer satisfaction in the Millennium and Copthorne group throughout Europe and also number one on Trip Advisor out of the 56 hotels that it lists for Sheffield.

Last year the hotel achieved an AA merit of 79 per cent and one AA rosette for its 18Fifty5 restaurant. The hotel has been placed joint first with the Millennium and Copthorne Group's flagship hotel for the whole of Europe.

Orla said: "I'm delighted that my hard work for The Copthorne has been recognised in Yorkshire. I believe our hotels are some of the best in Europe, while still trading at reasonable prices. This means we are popular with business and leisure customers both locally and for visitors to Sheffield. I have kept this tradition with the Copthorne's award-winning 18Fifty5 restaurant and now we have a loyal following who are able to taste delicious, innovative food made with local, seasonal produce.

"I very much enjoy working in Sheffield and have made some great friends through the different industry organisations I am part of."

Orla is currently on the executive board of hospitality Sheffield, a member of the Forward Ladies, Business Network Sheffield and also participates in the City Centre Management Group. In addition she has secured partnerships with Yorkshire South, Sheffield International Venues and Deliciously Yorkshire.

The awards ceremony will take place on September 24 at The Met Hotel, Leeds.

Forward Ladies started in 2000 as a small networking group of professionals. Since the organisation has grown to have a database of 12,000 women in business across the north of England from Hull to Liverpool.

The Walnut Club Champagne Bar & Grill has been refused permission to extend its opening hours. The bar & restaurant, on Ecclessall Road, had applied to stay open until 1:30AM on Fridays and Saturdays instead of the current closing time of 11:30PM.

Planning officers at Sheffield City Council received 32 letters objecting to the plans, as well as objections by five councillors and Liberal Democrat leader and Hallam MP Nick Clegg. Local residents believe that customers at the venue already make too much noise and that longer opening hours would exacerbate the problem.

Owner Richard Smith defended the plans, saying "We are a first-floor venue with no outdoor drinking or eating. We are a dining establishment, not a nightclub, and our customers are not noisy."

Council planning officers felt that the venue as in the wrong location to open later, with their report saying "Later opening hours will undoubtedly have an impact on the standard of amenity experienced by residents living in close proximity."

Nearby restaurant Nonna's and the Porter Brook pub have also had applications to extend their opening times rejected in recent years.

Do you dream of running your own restaurant?

Raymond Blanc is back and in this time of recession and gloom has an exciting opportunity for all aspiring restaurateurs! The series had huge success last year on BBC Two. Featuring Raymond Blanc and nine couples who battled it out over eight weeks, the show is coming back for a third series.

Raymond Blanc will once again be giving couples the opportunity to try their luck as restaurateurs and seeing if they can rise to the challenges he throws at them. With the tough economic climate forcing many high street restaurants out of business, this year's couples will need to be the best yet.

We want to hear from any couples who think they too could run a restaurant. Married, friends, siblings, relatives, partners, colleagues - anyone over the age of 18 can apply. Experience of a restaurant or catering environment isn't necessary but whether you're a chef or a cleaner, a waiter or writer, Raymond wants to hear from people who are passionate about food and the dining experience.

If you are a talented cook or host and believe you have the skills to succeed in this challenging and exciting profession then this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Piccolino arrives in 'heart of the city'

The transformation of Sheffield city centre continues with the opening of a renowned Italian restaurant and bar.

Piccolino restaurant and bar, which will open to the public on 31 May, brings the completion of the Heart of the City development - a £130 million scheme to regenerate Sheffield's city centre - one step closer.

Run by the Individual Restaurant Company, one of the north's fastest growing companies, Piccolino has successful operations throughout England. In areas such as Nottingham and Manchester, the venue is described as 'by far the best Italian restaurant in the city' and is consistently highly recommended as somewhere to enjoy a great atmosphere, good food and excellent service.

Inspired by the traditional charm and contemporary buzz associated with classic brasseries, the bright and airy venue will have a stylish, welcoming bar, intimate booth seating and a large 'al alfresco' dining option with space for up to a further 100 people outside in the new Millennium Square - the perfect place to watch the world go by Italian style.

Raising the bar for dining out in Sheffield, Piccolino has all the Italian favourites on the menu including mouth-watering risottos, a classic pasta selection, stone baked pizzas, succulent meat and fresh fish dishes. Everything, from the bread to pizza to the delicious flavours of ice cream, is home made on the premises by the restaurant chefs.

Andrew Wigger, General Manager of Piccolino Sheffield, said: "Sheffield is a cosmopolitan city with a strong demand for both high quality restaurant dining. Having worked with fresh Italian food for the last 20 years, we are excited about bringing a real taste of Italy to Sheffield and look forward to welcoming people to our new restaurant in this vibrant city.

"Being involved in the redevelopment of the city centre means we are not only ideally located in the heart of the city, but means we are also part of the Heart of the City project - something we are very proud of."

The 120-seater restaurant and bar, in Millennium Square, part of the £24 million 1 St Paul's Place building, joins ground floor neighbours Cafe Rouge and Caffe Nero and prestigious global law firm DLA Piper who occupy a large proportion of the grade A office space above.

Brendan Moffett, director of strategic marketing at Creative Sheffield, said: "The arrival of Piccolino further emphasises just how far the city centre has come. By welcoming outlets of the calibre of Piccolino, we add to the city's reputation of what it offers to the people who live here and those who visit.

"The restaurant sector across the city is continuing to improve, as befits a city as aspirational and focussed as Sheffield. Things are happening in Sheffield and Piccolino is a further sign of our progress."

Piccolino restaurant will open its doors to the public at 4 Millennium Square, St Paul's Place, Sheffield, S1 2JJ on 31 May at 5pm and thereafter will open at 12noon everyday until 11pm Monday - Saturday and until 10.30pm on Sunday.

FRIDAY NIGHT JAZZ SERVED UP AT ASTON HALL

Diners at one of South Yorkshire's leading hotels have been singing the praises of a number of jazz musicians who have been providing musical accompaniment to their dining experience.

The Zagato restaurant, part of the Aston Rooms at Aston Hall Hotel and Restaurant, introduced a selection of jazz performers that made Friday nights go with a swing three months ago and the jazz night is now been made a weekly event.

The performers, who between them serve up their jazz with lashings of critical acclaim, infuse their Friday night soundtrack from the bar area while diners enjoy the delights of the menu in the adjoining restaurant.

Jez Matthews, who is co-ordinating the Friday night performers and also half of double-act JezandFry, said: "It's a wonderfully elegant scene. We are very fortunate to have critically acclaimed and highly sought-after acts performing on Friday nights and it creates a beautiful atmosphere, terrifically ambient to compliment the venue."

Stephen White, General Manager at Aston Hall, added: "Friday nights at the Zagato Restaurant has been a great success since we introduced the musicians a couple of months ago.

"We wanted to provide our guests with a musical entree that lasts the whole night and is very much part of their overall dining experience and that seems to have worked really well."

The latest line-up includes Seth Bennett Trio (6th April) Rosie Brown Duo (13th April, 4th May), Sally Doherty Duo (20th April) Wendy Kirkland (27th April, 22nd June) Jez & Fry (11th May, 15th June) Lounge Lizards (18th May, 1st June) Martin O'Kane Duo (25th May) Nicola Farnon (8th June).

WasabiSabi is 3!

Award-winning Japanese restaurant celebrates third anniversary.

WasabiSabi caused quite a stir when it came onto the Sheffield restaurant scene, by being the city's first and only Japanese restaurant - a fact which still holds true today. And it wasn't long before its impact was known, it won Westside magazine's Restaurant of the Year 2004 and went onto win Northern Lifestyle's Restaurant of the Year 2005 and was nominated for Restaurant of the Year 2006 by readers of exposed magazine. The nation papers also got in the act; The Independent and Independent on Sunday both recommended WasabiSabi on various occasion.

With all this in mind, the restaurant has the right to look forward to celebrating their third anniversary at the end of February. And with the previous events being much talked about and well attended by the city's movers and shakers (The Long Blondes made an appearance at one of the events), expectation is high - as are the demand for places on the guest list.

As usual, the third anniversary on Monday 19th February will be strictly invite-only and will start with a drinks reception. Guests will also be able to sample the restaurant's award-winning dishes in the form of canapés, plus experience the highly popular teppanyaki show. But of course, there's always more. Uber-cool club night Razor Stiletto will be on hand to provide the entertainment for the evening.

And you never know; Sheffield's next big thing could be attending.

Brilliant bar tender James Hill is to create cocktails across the Atlantic in a bid to become World Class Bar Tender of the Year.

James (25), who works as general manager at 23 Bar and Restaurant in Sheffield, is down to the final 12 in the UK stage of the competition which aims to find the global guru of the bar world from 1,000 international competitors.

His next challenge will be to fly to New York in June 2007 during which he will make drinks for the first class passengers on the flight.

The discerning travellers will decide whether James gets the next plane home or goes into the last six from the UK in the final in the Big Apple.

Former Ecclesfield school pupil and University of Sheffield graduate James said: "The competition tests not only your drinks making skills but also product knowledge, history of the products, tasting notes, bar tending etiquette and customer service.

"My job is to persuade the passengers that I can choose and produce the best selection of drinks to match their food and mood during their trip over the Atlantic to keep me in Manhattan for four days and the final. I'm hoping to stay to represent 23 and the UK!"

James' Crimea River cocktail, which contains Tanqueray gin, rose water, violet liquor, lemon juice and lavender foam, all served in a Martini glass, secured him first place in the regional final in Manchester for a place in the last 12 in the UK.

23 Bar and Restaurant, based in West One and open until midnight, is no stranger to winning awards. Head chef John Farrar won the Bake it category of the Bake it, Shake it, Don't Break It Competition in Leeds earlier this year and is due to compete for a Gordon Ramsey Scholarship later this month. 23 also secured Exposed Magazine's Cocktail bar of the Year in 2006.
